The drug Sivakaranthai ilai was selected for the study to establish the analgesic; anti-inflammatory effect on Azhal keel vayu”. The dose of the Sivakaranthai chooranam is 1 gm twice a day with butter before meals. Brief description in botany regarding the morphological characters of the plant Sivakaranthai was reviewed. From the Gunapadam aspects, various texts, literatures, journals, Internet (Websites) were referred. Bio-chemical analysis was done and it reveals that the drug contains ferrous iron, tannic acid, unsaturated, compound, reducing sugar, amino acid. Microbiological studies revealed that the drug sensitives to Staphylococcus pyogenes Pharmacological studies showed that the drug posses significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, antipyretic and Antihistamine actions. Clinical studies indicated that the test drug 77.5% patients have good response. Thus, the Anti-inflammatory, Analgesic effect and its role in management of Azhal keel vayu were established in this study. No toxic symptoms or adverse reactions had been appeared during and after the period of treatment. CONCLUSION: This is concluded that the trial drug Sivakaranthai ilai chooranam is found to be an effective in Azhal keelvayu without producing any untoward effects. Background: Ever increasing therapeutic modalities in treatment of various malignancies has resulted in an enormous number of cancer survivors. Cancer survivors face various issues in their long term health due to the cancer and/or its treatment. Late effects including organ damage, functional disability and risk of second malignancy continue to be elucidated. One of the most debilitating and serious toxicity is cardiotoxicity due to chemotherapy. Methods: This study was a retrospective analysis of all patients who developed chemotherapy induced cardiotoxicity between January 2013 to December 2015.Results: A total of 16 patients developed cardiotoxicity. 13 patients had doxorubicin induced toxicity. Cardiotoxicity was noted to occur at low cumulative doses. 2 patients had complete recovery of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) on follow up. 1 patient had progressive worsening of LVEF. 1 patient died due to cardiotoxicity. On detection of cardiotoxicity, most of the patients received cardiac remodeling drugs - angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (mostly enalapril), other drugs used were carvedilol and diuretics. Conclusions: In Indian patients, cardiotoxicity can occur at very low cumulative doses of doxorubicin and in young patients too. Most of the patients did not have any underlying comorbid illnesses. We wish to highlight the need to diligently repeat cardiac screening investigations at frequent intervals to detect asymptomatic cardiotoxicity

Editorial: Mindfulness and mental health in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic

[Extract] COVID-19, associated public health measures—such as quarantine lockdown, the cessation of lockdown, re-lockdown—and media coverage of the spread of the virus, have contributed to psychological fear and anxiety on a global scale. As of 6 April 2023, globally 762,201,169 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 6,893,190 deaths have been reported to WHO. Many people have been able to effectively engage mental resources, such as mindfulness, to overcome pandemic-related adversities and stresses and maintain mental health. This Research Topic, including seven papers, aims to explore the impact of mindfulness on the maintenance (and even potential improvement) of psychological wellbeing and mental health in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mindfulness refers to the quality of being aware of the present moment with curious, open-minded, non-judging, non-striving, and acceptant attitudes (Kabat-Zinn, 1982, 2013; Shapiro et al., 2008; Fisher et al., 2023). Mindfulness can provide cognitive flexibility to support the individual to actively construct current experiences and adapt to changing demands and challenging situations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic by building mental resources and establishing new perspectives (Li et al., 2020)

Role of preoperative CA-125 levels in predicting the DFS and OS in epithelial ovarian cancer

Background: Ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate among all the other gynaecologic malignancies. Stage I cancer treated with surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy report a 5-year overall survival of 95% while this value significantly drops to 25% in stage IIIC and IV patients. Unfortunately, effective screening methods to detect the early cancer are yet to be identified. Methods: All the patients diagnosed to have epithelial ovarian carcinoma from January 2012 to December 2014 at our center with pre-treatment CA-125 levels were included in this retrospective study. Disease free survival and overall survival were tabulated either by telephonic conversation or on a regular follow up visit to the hospital. Results: Among the 69 patients enrolled 38% of the patients were in the age group of 50-60 years. 58% of patients had stage 3 disease up front. mean CA-125 levels were lowest in patients with stage I disease and the highest in stage IV disease with a statistically significant rise in CA-125 levels with the stage of disease. Only 52% of the patients completed the treatment as per protocol. There was a significant negative co relation between the CA-125 levels and survival rates in both the sub groups of patients who received complete and incomplete treatment respectively. Conclusions: In the present study we would like to conclude that pre-operative CA-125, which has already been included in the screening algorithms like ROCA, has a greater potential to become a prognostic marker. Present study is limited by the small number of patient’s and thus larger multi centric studies with better randomization could establish the role of CA-125 as a prognostication marker

ABSTRACT: Physico-chemical studies were conducted in river Arasalar situated in Kumbakonam, Tamilnadu, India. The study was conducted from January to December 2010. The present paper deals with nutrient status in Arasalar river, for this three stations were selected for the sampling methods i.e., S1, S2 and S3 the main aim of the study was to determine the nutrient status of Arasalar River and the suitability of the water for domestic and other purposes, in the light of water quality criteria prescribed by WHO standards. The parameters analyzed are water Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride Sodium, potassium, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate, Sulphate, Silicate and Iron. The results indicated that most of the Physico-chemical quality parameters of River Arasalar were within the WHO limits for drinking water and, therefore, may be suitable for domestic purpose. However, nutrients levels were high during the study period and did not give any clear seasonal variation. The results revealed that the values of Nitrite and Phosphate do not compile with WHO standards. Water quality assessment of delta regions of Arasalar River revealed strictly contamination from anthropogenic activities
