    One-shot 3d surface reconstruction from instantaneous frequencies: solutions to ambiguity problems

    Phase-measuring profilometry is a well known technique for 3D surface reconstruction based on a sinusoidal pattern that is projected on a scene. If the surface is partly occluded by, for instance, other objects, then the depth shows abrupt transitions at the edges of these occlusions. This causes ambiguities in the phase and, consequently, also in the reconstruction.\ud This paper introduces a reconstruction method that is based on the instantaneous frequency instead of phase. Using these instantaneous frequencies we present a method to recover from ambiguities caused by occlusion. The recovery works under the condition that some surface patches can be found that are planar. This ability is demonstrated in a simple example. \u

    A human CD5+ B cell clone that secretes an idiotype-specific high affinity IgM monoclonal antibody.

    We previously demonstrated the occurrence of a naturally arisen human anti-idiotypic B cell clone, that we transformed with EBV (EBV383). We show evidence that EBV383 not only expresses the CD5 surface Ag, but also contains the 2.7-kb mRNA transcript encoding this protein. In addition, we show the presence of the 3.6-kb mRNA precursor. Most Ig produced by CD5+ B cells are polyreactive natural IgM antibodies encoded by unmutated copies of germline VH genes. However, in this study we present data demonstrating the monoreactive high affinity character of the anti-idiotypic antibody (mAb383) produced by EBV383. These data are in agreement with our previous observations, showing that the VH chain of mAb383 is encoded by an extensive somatically mutated VHV gene in a way that is consistent with an Ag-driven immune response. A possible role for this remarkable anti-idiotypic antibody in the maintenance of B cell memory is discussed

    In situ optofluidic control of reconfigurable photonic crystal cavities

    The mobile nature of fluids is fully exploited in planar photonic crystals to not only tune and reconfigure in situ optical microcavities, in a continuous and reversible manner, but also to create "a posteriori" spatially programmable cavities. Both the amount of liquid and the location of the selectively infiltrated area can be accurately controlled either mechanically, using a microfiber manipulator, or optically, using a laser-controlled evaporation and recondensation scheme. The wide applicability is illustrated by tuning a cavity resonance over 50¿nm, adjusting the frequency splitting of an originally degenerate cavity mode, and by freely moving a liquid-induced cavity through dragging a microdroplet

    Comparison of breast-conserving therapy with mastectomy for treatment of early breast cancer in community hospitals

    Although the results of clinical trials support breast-conserving therapy as a replacement for mastectomy in early breast cancer, the question remains,whether these results apply in routine clinical practice. In the present analysis the breast cancer-specific survival and recurrence-free survival of 464 consecutive patients with breast tumours ≤ 3 cm across undergoing breast-conserving therapy were compared with a group of 459 patients with similar extent of disease and period of diagnosis undergoing mastectomy. All patients were treated in community hospitals in the south-eastern Netherlands. Median follow-up of both treatment groups was 6.2 years. After adjustment for the prognostic effects of age, tumour size, axillary nodal status and adjuvant systemic therapy, neither breast cancer-specific survival nor recurrence-free survival differed significantly between the breast-conserving therapy group and the mastectomy group. This finding indicates that in routine clinical practice breast-conserving therapy may be as effective as mastectomy

    A 'civilized' drink and a 'civilizing' industry: wine growing and cultural imagining in colonial New South Wales

    My starting point for this thesis was the absence of a foundation history of Australian wine growing conducted by an historian rather than researchers in other disciplines or the media. I have used existing work on wine history in New South Wales from 1788 to 1901 alongside a significant body of new research to create an historical argument suitable for incorporation into more broadly-themed narratives of Australian history and to inform studies of wine growing in other academic fields. My main argument is that although wine growing proved of little economic value in colonial primary production compared with nation-building commodities - such as pastoralism, wheat growing and gold - advocates of the cultivation of wine grapes believed wine growing embodied beneficial, even transformative, cultural value so they persisted in attempting to create a ‘civilizing’ industry producing a ‘civilized’ drink despite lacklustre consumption of their product and very modest profits. Several times, from 1788 to 1901, these advocates spoke out or wrote about wine and wine growing as capable of creating order in a wild or ‘savage’ landscape and within a settler society shaped culturally by shifting adaptations to both imported and ‘native’ influences in agriculture as well as alcohol production, consumption and distribution. While the methodological framework employed here falls mainly within cultural and economic history, sociological theories have contributed to findings on causation. The result is a comprehensive narrative of colonial wine growing in New South Wales enriched by links to key developments in Australian colonial history and with reference to wine growing in other British colonies or former territories
