Enhancing Performance & Preventing Injuries in Team Sport Players
Next to physical load and recovery as a result of training, psychosocial stress and recovery affect performance and injury risk of team sport players. This can be concluded based on a series of studies that focus on the relation between jumping technique, training load, training recovery, psychosocial stress and recovery on the one hand and performance and injury risk on the other hand.In total 129 male and female volleyball, basketball, korfball and floorball players were monitored over two seasons. During this period the players were screened for jumping technique at the start of the season, while during the season performance tests were conducted every 6 weeks and the players filled out a psychosocial stress and recovery questionnaire every 3 weeks. Injuries were registered by the physical therapist. Results show that more psychosocial stress and less psychosocial recovery relate to a decreased aerobic performance. Less psychosocial recovery also relate to the occurrence of acute and overuse injuries. The screening at the start of the season shows that less stability after landing from a jump increases the risk of an acute ankle injury, while a stiff landing technique increases the risk of an overuse knee injury. For practice, it seems important for coaches and sport physiotherapist to include baseline measurements to identify players at risk and incorporate prevention programs into their daily training routines. Besides, monitoring physical and psychosocial stress and recovery during the season can identify players with a disbalance and proper interventions in training or the psychosocial domain can be implemented
Individual variability in heart rate recovery after standardized submaximal exercise
To optimize performance, coaches and athletes are always looking for the right balance between training load and recovery. Therefore, closely monitoring of athletes is important. Heart rate recovery (HRR) after standardized sub maximal exercise has been proposed as a useful variable to monitor (Lamberts et al., 2004). However, it is well known that heart rate, next to biological variability, is influenced by several factors such as training load and psychosocial stress. So, the purpose was to look at individual variability in HRR from one week to another using the heart rate interval monitoring system (HIMS). Methods Eight elite Dutch female indoor hockey players (age: 23.9Ā±3.91yr, length: 155.0Ā±7.01cm, weight: 56.6Ā±6.16kg) completed the HIMS two weeks in a row (Lamberts et al., 2004). The heart rate at the end of the last stage (HRend) was determined and the HRR was calculated one minute after the end of the last stage. Furthermore, training load and psychosocial stress and recovery were monitored using the Foster-method (1998) and the RESTQ-Sport (Nederhof et al., 2008), respectively. Results A strong correlation was found between the HRend from one week to the other (r=0.984 p

This research is concerned with the application of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in
the study of leukoaraiosis and normal white matter. Four main objectives outlined in
the study have been achieved. A head phantom was used and a total of 15 normal
subjects and 51 leukoaraiosis subjects participated in the study. A total of 5128 slices
were analysed in this work. Brain imaging was performed using 1.5 Tesla MRI
system.
Feasibility of acquiring DTI data and constructing fiber tracts for
leukoaraiosis study was investigated. Results obtained showed capability of DTI to
distinguish leukoaraiosis from normal white matter. Fiber tractography exhibited a
good structural differentiation of nerve fibers in the white matter region. Acquiring
DTI data and constructing fiber tractography for assessment of leukoaraiosis was
found to be feasible

A one year prospective study on ankle stability and landing technique: the occurrence of ankle and knee injuries in elite ball team athletes
Background: In team sports lower extremity injuries account for more than 50% of all injuries, indicating the importance of early detection of athletes at risk. Objective: To investigate the predictive value of ankle stability and landing technique at baseline for ankle and knee injury occurrence during the consecutive season in indoor team sport athletes. Design: A prospective longitudinal cohort study. Setting: (Sub-)elite level basketball, korfball or volleyball athletes participated. Participants: Out of fifty-eight athletes forty-two athletes (age:22.2Ā±3.9yr,height:184.5Ā±11.8cm,mass:79.0Ā±15.2kg) met the inclusion criteria; being ā„eighteen years, performed baseline measurement and completion of consecutive season. Interventions (assessment risk factors): Athletes performed the Single-Leg Jump-Landing (SLJL) test and the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) Jump, a jump-landing-rebound task, at baseline. SLJL test resulted in a dynamic stability index (DSI) in medial-lateral (ml), anterior-posterior (ap) and vertical (v) direction for frontal, diagonal and lateral jump direction. High DSI indicates poor stability. The LESS determines an athleteās landing technique; high score represents poor landing technique. Main Outcome measurements: Ankle and knee injuries were registered according to the FIFA registration system. Results: Nine ankle injuries and seven knee injuries were reported. Athletes that reported an ankle injury scored a significant (pā¤0.05) higher DSI compared to non-injured athletes in diagonal ap (0.072Ā±0.01 vs 0.066Ā±0.01), diagonal v (0.350Ā±0.06 vs 0.305Ā±0.05) and lateral ap (0.057Ā±0.01 vs 0.047Ā±0.01) direction. Athletes that reported a knee injury scored a non-significant higher LESS score (7.46Ā±1.38) compared to non-injured athletes (6.20Ā±2.0). Conclusions: Athletes who sustained an ankle injury during the season showed higher DSI at baseline. Athletes with a knee injury showed tendency toward poorer landing technique. Both tests seem feasible to screen athletes at baseline giving insight in high-risk athletes. Prevention programs could be implemented preventing these athletes from sustaining an injury
