Mode competition in a system of two parametrically driven pendulums: the role of symmetry

This paper is the final part in a series of four on the dynamics of two coupled, parametrically driven pendulums. In the previous three parts (Banning and van der Weele, Mode competition in a system of two parametrically driven pendulums; the Hamiltonian case, Physica A 220 (1995) 485¿533; Banning et al., Mode competition in a system of two parametrically driven pendulums; the dissipative case, Physica A 245 (1997) 11¿48; Banning et al., Mode competition in a system of two parametrically driven pendulums with nonlinear coupling, Physica A 245 (1997) 49¿98) we have given a detailed survey of the different oscillations in the system, with particular emphasis on mode interaction. In the present paper we use group theory to highlight the role of symmetry. It is shown how certain symmetries can obstruct period doubling and Hopf bifurcations; the associated routes to chaos cannot proceed until these symmetries have been broken. The symmetry approach also reveals the general mechanism of mode interaction and enables a useful comparison with other systems

Mode competition in a system of two parametrically driven pendulums with nonlinear coupling

This paper is part three in a series on the dynamics of two coupled, parametrically driven pendulums. In the previous parts Banning and van der Weele (1995) and Banning et al. (1997) studied the case of linear coupling; the present paper deals with the changes brought on by the inclusion of a nonlinear (third-order) term in the coupling. Special attention will be given to the phenomenon of mode competition.\ud \ud The nonlinear coupling is seen to introduce a new kind of threshold into the system, namely a lower limit to the frequency at which certain motions can exist. Another consequence is that the mode interaction between 1¿ and 2ß (two of the normal motions of the system) is less degenerate, causing the intermediary mixed motion known as MP to manifest itself more strongly

Morphometric study of myocardial changes during doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy in mice

Doxorubicin (DOX) is one of the most effective anti-cancer drugs in oncology, but may cause a cumulative dose-dependent cardiomyopathy in a number of cancer patients. The effect of DOX on the heart was studied in mice treated with i.v. injections of 2 mg/kg by measuring morphometric parameters, including nuclear index (number of non-myocytes/number of myocyte nuclei), reticulin index (reticulin area/number of myocyte transsections), nuclear transsectional area, myocyte transsectional area, capillary index (number of capillaries/number of myocyte transsections) and capillary transsectional area. The highest significant difference between control mice and DOX-treated mice was observed immediately after the 12th dose of DOX except for the two capillary parameters. The highest level of significance for these two parameters was obtained 12 weeks after the end of DOX treatment. In contrast to the observations in rats, mice did not develop a nephrotic syndrome during treatment with DOX. The morphometric analysis of myocardial changes in mice, as a quantitative and objective method, seems to be a good model for comparative studies on cardiomyopathy induced by anthracycline analogues

How Do We Do It? The English Language Proficiency of Second Language Learners in the Foundation Phase of an English Medium School: Challenges and Strategies

Pulished ArticleThe language of instruction in South Africa is currently a very controversial issue. As a result of South Africa’s political history, English is almost always chosen as the language of instruction. However, in many cases, as is the case in the current study, the learners have not been adequately exposed to English when they enter the Foundation Phase. This study reports research conducted at a former privileged primary school in South Africa with English as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT). The aim of the study was to explore the practices implemented by the Foundation Phase teachers to teach the learners English, and to ascertain how the school has managed to maintain a consistently high academic standard, despite the language difficulties of their learners. The findings of the study may be of value to schools which are faced with similar challenges as the sample school
