    Direct frequency comb spectroscopy of trapped ions

    Direct frequency comb spectroscopy of trapped ions is demonstated for the first time. It is shown that the 4s^2S_(1/2)-4p^2P_(3/2) transition in calcium ions can be excited directly with a frequency comb laser that is upconverted to 393 nm. Detection of the transition is performed using a shelving scheme to suppress background signal from non-resonant comb modes. The measured transition frequency of f=761 905 012.7(0.5) MHz presents an improvement in accuracy of more than two orders of magnitude.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figur

    High accuracy frequency metrology on the 4s 2S1/2 - 4p 2P1/2 transition in calcium ions is performed using laser cooled and crystallized ions in a linear Paul trap. Calibration is performed with a frequency comb laser, resulting in a transition frequency of f=755222766.2(1.7) MHz.     Rigorous investigation of the reduced density matrix for the ideal Bose gas in harmonic traps by a loop-gas-like approach

    In this paper, we rigorously investigate the reduced density matrix (RDM) associated to the ideal Bose gas in harmonic traps. We present a method based on a sum-decomposition of the RDM allowing to treat not only the isotropic trap, but also general anisotropic traps. When focusing on the isotropic trap, the method is analogous to the loop-gas approach developed by W.J. Mullin in [38]. Turning to the case of anisotropic traps, we examine the RDM for some anisotropic trap models corresponding to some quasi-1D and quasi-2D regimes. For such models, we bring out an additional contribution in the local density of particles which arises from the mesoscopic loops. The close connection with the occurrence of generalized-BEC is discussed. Our loop-gas-like approach provides relevant information which can help guide numerical investigations on highly anisotropic systems based on the Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method.Comment: v3: Minor modifications of v2. v2: Major modifications: the former version (v1) has been completely rewritten.     Basal Ganglia Involvement in the Playfulness of Juvenile Rats

    Play is an important part of normal childhood development and can be readily studied in the laboratory rat in the form of rough‐and‐tumble play. Given the robust nature of rough‐and‐tumble play, it has often been assumed that the basal ganglia would have a prominent role in modulating this behavior. Recent work using c‐fos expression as a metabolic marker for neural activity combined with temporary inactivation of relevant corticostriatal regions and pharmacological manipulations of opioid, cannabinoid, and dopamine systems has led to a better understanding of how basal ganglia circuitry may be involved in modulating social play in the juvenile rat. Studies using selective play deprivation have also provided insight into the consequences of playful experiences on basal ganglia function. Data reviewed in this paper support a role for the basal ganglia in social play and also suggest that corticostriatal functioning also benefits from playful activities

    On-line Excited-State Laser Spectroscopy of Trapped Short-Lived Ra+^+ Ions

    As an important step towards an atomic parity violation experiment in one single trapped Ra+^+ ion, laser spectroscopy experiments were performed with on-line produced short-lived 212,213,214^{212,213,214}Ra+^+ ions. The isotope shift of the 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2}\,-\,7\,^2P1/2_{1/2} and 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2}\,-\,7\,^2P3/2_{3/2} transitions and the hyperfine structure constant of the 7\,^2S1/2_{1/2} and 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2} states in 213^{213}Ra+^+ were measured. These values provide a benchmark for the required atomic theory. A lower limit of 232(4)232(4) ms for the lifetime of the metastable 6\,^2D5/2_{5/2} state was measured by optical shelving.Comment: 4.2 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

    Predictors of non-pharmacological intervention in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation:Value of neuroticism

    Background: Non-pharmacological intervention is gaining increasing popularity in the treatment of patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. We sought to investigate which factors play a role in the choice for non-pharmacological intervention with a particular focus on neuroticism. Methods: The study group comprised 73 patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (mean age 55 13 years, 50 males). On average, patients had a 3-year-history of one symptomatic paroxysm per week lasting 2 It. The degree of neuroticism was assessed using the short scale Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Results: During a mean follow-up period of 7.0 +/- 0.6 years, 20 patients (27%) underwent a non-pharmacological intervention for atria] fibrillation including His bundle ablation (n=1), maze operation (n=4), DDDR-pacemaker (n=10), pulmonary vein ablation (n=5). Multivariate regression analysis showed that age <55 years (odds ratio 5.3, 95% CI 1.1-24.5), frequency of paroxysms of atrial fibrillation > 1 per week (odds ratio 5.9, 95% CI 1.2-28.5) and total number of anti-arrhythmic drugs (class I and III) used > 2 (odds ratio 3.4, 95% CI 1.6-6.9) were predictive of non-pharmacological intervention (all p <0.05). In contrast, the degree of neuroticism was similar in patients who underwent non-pharmacological intervention as opposed to patients who did not undergo non-pharmacological intervention (4.5 +/- 3.3 vs. 4.0 +/- 2.9, p = NS). Conclusions: On the basis of this small study, neuroticism would not appear to play an important role in the decision to perform a nonpharmacological intervention. Instead, the data indicate that younger patients with pharmacologically refractory atrial fibrillation more often undergo non-pharmacological intervention. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.     Laser spectroscopy of short-lived radium isotopes in a linear Paul trap has been performed. The isotope shifts of the 6d\,^2D3/2 _{3/2}\, - 7p\,^2P1/2 _{1/2}\, transition in 209−214^{209-214}Ra+^+ were measured, which are sensitive to the short range part of the atomic wavefunctions. The results are essential experimental input for improving the precision of atomic structure calculation.
