Het college van hoofdingelanden. De vertegenwoordiging van de ingelanden in Rijnland en Schieland in de vroegmoderne tijd

In de hoogheemraadschappen van Rijnland en Schieland trad in de vroegmoderne tijd een radicale institutionele verandering op. Die betrof de wijze waarop de grondbezitters vertegenwoordigd werden tegenover het waterschapsbestuur. In de middeleeuwen overlegden de bestuurders met een brede en flexibele groep afgevaardigden van grondbezitters uit vele dorpen. Deze groep werd verdrongen door een kleine, vaste en elitaire groep hoofdingelanden. De drijvende krachten achter de vorming van het college van hoofdingelanden waren steden. Door vertegenwoordigende structuren binnen rurale organisaties zoals waterschappen te verbinden aan steden, draagt het artikel bij aan de discussie over de vraag of intensieve politieke participatie vooral een stedelijk fenomeen is. In the Early Modern Period the representation of landowners on the regional water boards of Rijnland and Schieland changed drastically. During the Middle Ages the regional water authorities conferred with a broad and flexible group of representatives, delegated by local landowners, but these were dismissed and replaced by a small, permanent and elitist group of principal landowners. The cities were the driving forces behind the formation of Boards of Principal Landowners. By linking representative institutions in rural contexts to cities, this article contributes to the debate whether or not intensive political participation was an urban phenomenon.  </p

The predecessors of ABN AMRO and the expropriation of Jewish assets in the Netherlands

This article describes the role played by Dutch banks in the confiscation of Jewish property during World War II. ABN AMRO s predecessors, then seven commercial banks, surrendered the lion s share of Jewish financial assets to the Nazis. How can this be explained? One possible answer is that the banks allowed their own, commercial, interests to prevail over those of their Jewish clients. Other factors were: strategies of deception by the German authorities, low level of resistance among Dutch Jews, German pressure on banks to release Jewish assets and, finally, the lengthy duration of the war.

Roots of growth and productivity change in Dutch shipping industry, 1500-1800

Shipping was one of the most dynamic industries of the pre industrial period. The article presents detailed estimates of the growth of output and inputs of the shipping industry in the Netherlands between 1500 and 1800. These are used to study the development of productivity in two ways: by comparing output with inputs (labour and capital), and by analysing the relationship between output prices and input prices. Both methods lead to different results, which we explain. It appears that productivity in this sector increased strongly between ca. 1550 and 1620 as a result of technological and institutional changes, such as the increased efficiency of the network of shipping routes. After 1620 labour productivity continued to increase because of factor substitution as wages increased much more than capital costs. The competitiveness of the Dutch shipping sector did not improve anymore after ca. 1650, however, which helps to explain why its rapid growth came to an end in the second half of the 17th century.Productivity Economic growth Shipping industry Early modern period
