    Using the probabilistic evaluation tool for the analytical solution of large Markov models

    Stochastic Petri net-based Markov modeling is a potentially very powerful and generic approach for evaluating the performance and dependability of many different systems, such as computer systems, communication networks, manufacturing systems, etc. As a consequence of their general applicability, SPN-based Markov models form the basic solution approach for several software packages that have been developed for the analytic solution of performance and dependability models. In these tools, stochastic Petri nets are used to conveniently specify complicated models, after which an automatic mapping can be carried out to an underlying Markov reward model. Subsequently, this Markov reward model is solved by specialized solution algorithms, appropriately selected for the measure of interest. One of the major aspects that hampers the use of SPN-based Markov models for the analytic solution of performance and dependability results is the size of the state space. Although typically models of up to a few hundred thousand states can conveniently be solved on modern-day work-stations, often even larger models are required to represent all the desired detail of the system.     A relation between circumnuclear HI, dust, and optical cores in low-power radio galaxies

    From new observations and literature data we investigate the presence of HI, dust, and optical cores in the central kiloparsec of low-power radio galaxies. The goal of this pilot study is to identify physical relations between these components, which can help us to study kinematics and feeding mechanisms in future samples of active galaxies. Our results are consistent with neutral gas being associated with dust on sub-kiloparsec scales. Objects that have HI absorption always have significant amounts of dust in their host galaxy. If there is no visible dust in the host galaxy, there is also no HI absorption. The presence of an unresolved optical core correlates with the HI column density, with the core being absent in high column density sources. This work opens a path for studying the kinematics of cold material in the central regions of active galaxies by combining information of HI absorption and molecular lines. Consistent with previous work, we find no evidence for a compact, parsec-scale obscuring torus in low-power radio galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    Performance of a connectionless protocol over ATM

    Recent studies show the existence of a demand for a connectionless broadband service. In order to cope with this demand, a connectionless protocol for the B-ISDN needs to be designed. Such a protocol should make use of ATM and the ATM Adaptation Layer. It needs to specify destination and bandwidth of connections to the ATM network without advance knowledge of the traffic that has to be transferred over these connection. A possible mechanism which can cope with this problem, the 'On-demand Connection with Delayed Release' (OCDR) mechanism, is described. Its eficient operation is based on the assumption that there exists a certain correlation between subsequently arriving CL packets. Two different arrival processes are used to evaluate the performance of the OCDR mechanism: a Poisson arrival process, and a Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) which models a bursty trafic source. Markov models of the OCDR mechanism have been constructed for both arrival processes. For the madel with Poisson arrivals, a closed form solution is presented. The model with MMPP arrivals is solved numerically.\ud Compared to a 'Permanent Connection' mechanism significant bandwidth reductions can be obtained provided that the offered trafic has a bursty nature. Furthermore, the OCDR mechanism has the advantageous property that the obtained average node delay is not strongly related to the intensity and burstiness of the offered trafic

    Weight filtration on the cohomology of complex analytic spaces

    We extend Deligne's weight filtration to the integer cohomology of complex analytic spaces (endowed with an equivalence class of compactifications). In general, the weight filtration that we obtain is not part of a mixed Hodge structure. Our purely geometric proof is based on cubical descent for resolution of singularities and Poincar\'e-Verdier duality. Using similar techniques, we introduce the singularity filtration on the cohomology of compactificable analytic spaces. This is a new and natural analytic invariant which does not depend on the equivalence class of compactifications and is related to the weight filtration.Comment: examples added + minor correction

    Betrayal, Distrust, and Rationality: Smart Counter-Collusion Contracts for Verifiable Cloud Computing

    Cloud computing has become an irreversible trend. Together comes the pressing need for verifiability, to assure the client the correctness of computation outsourced to the cloud. Existing verifiable computation techniques all have a high overhead, thus if being deployed in the clouds, would render cloud computing more expensive than the on-premises counterpart. To achieve verifiability at a reasonable cost, we leverage game theory and propose a smart contract based solution. In a nutshell, a client lets two clouds compute the same task, and uses smart contracts to stimulate tension, betrayal and distrust between the clouds, so that rational clouds will not collude and cheat. In the absence of collusion, verification of correctness can be done easily by crosschecking the results from the two clouds. We provide a formal analysis of the games induced by the contracts, and prove that the contracts will be effective under certain reasonable assumptions. By resorting to game theory and smart contracts, we are able to avoid heavy cryptographic protocols. The client only needs to pay two clouds to compute in the clear, and a small transaction fee to use the smart contracts. We also conducted a feasibility study that involves implementing the contracts in Solidity and running them on the official Ethereum network.Comment: Published in ACM CCS 2017, this is the full version with all appendice

    HI on large and small scales in starburst radio galaxies

    The study of the optical continuum of radio galaxies shows that about 30% have a young stellar population component. Among them are the most far-IR bright radio galaxies. A further indication of the relatively gas rich environment of these galaxies (possibly related to the recent merger from which they originate) is the high fraction being detected in HI. Here we present recent results obtained from the study of neutral hydrogen (detected either in emission or absorption) in a group of starburst radio galaxies. In some objects, large-scale (tens of kpc) structures involving HI masses exceeding 10^9 M_sun are observed. In these cases, the HI can be used to study the origin and evolution of these systems and the timescales involved. In this respect, the parameters obtained from the study of the stellar populations and from the HI can be complementary. In other objects, very broad (> 1000 km/s), mostly blueshifted HI is detected in absorption. This result shows that, despite the extremely energetic phenomena occurring near an AGN - including the powerful radio jet - some of the outflowing gas remains, or becomes again, neutral. This can give new and important insights in the physical conditions of the gaseous medium around an AGN.
