A superelement-based method for computing unsteady three-dimensional potential flows in hydraulic turbomachines

A numerical method is presented for the computation of unsteady, three-dimensional potential flows in hydraulic pumps and turbines. The superelement method has been extended in order to eliminate slave degrees of freedom not only from the governing Laplace equation, but also from the Kutta conditions. The resulting superelement formulation is invariant under rotation. Therefore the geometrical symmetry of the flow channels in the rotor can be exploited. This makes the method especially suitable to performing fully coupled computations of the unsteady flow phenomena in both rotor and stator, the so-called rotor-stator interaction. \ud The developed numerical method is used to simulate the unsteady flow in an industrial mixed-flow pump. Two types of simulation are considered: one in which unsteady wakes behind the trailing edges of the rotor blades are taken into account and one in which these are neglected. Results are given that show the importance of unsteady flow phenomena. However, the computed head-capacity curve is hardly influenced by whether or not unsteady wakes are taken into account

Culture Matters: French-German Conflicts on European Central Bank Independence

With the Maastricht treaty, the members of the Eurozone agreed on the establishment of a very independent European Central Bank, as well as making their National Central Banks far more independent. However, over the years French political leaders systematically brought forward proposals undermining the ECB's independence, to the dismay of Germany. A pattern that surfaced again during the current sovereign debt crisis and has complicated finding a timely and unified answer to the problems. The article conducts tests of various factors expected to influence the preference for central bank independence. It shows that economic explanations are unable to account for the persistent differences amongst European member-states on this issue. Instead, cultural differences in attitudes, especially a nation's score on the dimension of Power Distance - its acceptance of centralisation of power in a small set of political leaders or institutions - does show a correlation with the different levels of internalisation of the Central Bank independence norm.Central Bank Independence; Culture; European Central Bank; Franco- German relations

Capacity formulas in MWPC: some critical reflexions

    Get PDF
An approximate analytical expression for "capacitance" of MWPC configurations circulates in the literature since decades and is copied over and over again. In this paper we will try to show that this formula corresponds to a physical quantity that is different from what it is usually thought to stand for

Not lost in translation: writing auditorily presented words at study increases correct recognition “at no cost”

© 2016 Taylor & Francis. Previous studies have reported a translation effect in memory, whereby encoding tasks that involve translating between processing domains produce a memory advantage relative to tasks that involve a single domain. We investigated the effects of translation on true and false memories using the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) procedure [Deese, J. (1959). On the prediction of occurrence of particular verbal intrusions in immediate recall. Journal of Experimental Psychology, 58, 17–22; Roediger, H. L., III, & McDermott, K. B. (1995). Creating false memories: Remembering words not presented in lists. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, & Cognition, 21, 803–814]. Translation between modalities enhanced correct recognition but had no effect on false recognition. Results are consistent with previous research showing that correct memory can be enhanced “at no cost” in terms of accuracy. Findings are discussed in terms of understanding the relationship between true and false memories produced by the DRM procedure
