The Impact of Residential Life Hall Directors Becoming Hourly Employees in the Minnesota State University System

Live-on residential life hall director staff shifted from a salaried employment status to an hourly employment status as a result of a reinterpretation of the duties test of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for these positions. Transitioning live-on residential life staff to hourly employment status occurred at institutions in the Minnesota State University System resulting in an unusual employment status for hall directors in the Minnesota State System compared to the national norm. Residence hall directors who became hourly employees served as the population of this basic qualitative study. The purpose was to explore the impact on worker performance resulting from the transition to hourly employment status. Blumberg and Pringle’s (1982) theory of worker performance served as the theoretical framework that guided this study. Kezar’s (2013) expansion of this theory of worker performance also contributed to the theoretical underpinning of this study. The narratives that emerged from this qualitative study provides context for future higher education leaders faced with the changing employment status of employees who have historically been salaried and then must transition to overtime-eligible status. Non-exempt (overtime-eligible) professionals in a higher education setting are likely confined to performing their duties in the context of a 40-hour workweek. Summative peer assessment using ‘Turnitin’ and a large cohort of students: a case study

At the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, the use of peer assessment is increasingly being considered by lecturers that want to give their traditional lecture-based courses a more active learning component. Prins et al. (2005) point out that peer assessment can be very well integrated in such courses and research shows that formative peer assessment results in an increased understanding of the learning content, the development of assessment skills and a reflection on one’s own learning performance (Hamer, Kwong et al. 2005; Prins, Sluijsmans et al. 2005). However, the validity and reliability of peer-generated marks is still under debate (Cho and Schunn 2003). In order to support peer assessment in courses with large cohorts of students, computer support can be regarded as a necessity to manage the whole process of assignment submission and grading. This paper describes a case study on the use of a commercial peer assessment application for summative peer assessment. It describes the course set up, the use of the software and use of the generated marks for summative purposes. The study shows that the system is easy to use for both instructors and students and that it can support large cohorts of students despite some technical problems. The students are very positive about the benefits of peer assessment for their own learning, but they have a low confidence in peer assessment for summative purposes, despite considerable efforts to motivate the students and to build in measures to increase the grade reliability and validity

Progetto di una caserma dei Vigili del Fuoco in Zimmerstra?e a Karlsruhe (Germania)

Il lavoro di Tesi riguarda la progettazione di una Caserma dei Vigili del Fuoco nella città di Karlsruhe in Germania, grazie ad una collaborazione tra la Scuola di Ingegneria dell’Università di Pisa e il Dipartimento di Progettazione, Arte e Teoria dell’Università Tecnica di Karlsruhe - Karlsruhe Institut für Technologie. La progettazione di una struttura di così grande impatto per dimensioni e posizione all’interno del tessuto urbano di Karlsruhe e il suo rapporto con le infrastrutture presenti (ferrovia, viabilità principale extraurbana, parchi pubblici) e per l’importanza della funzione a cui è destinata, ha richiesto un’attenta fase preliminare di studio e ricerca orientata ad approfondire e interpretare i seguenti aspetti: condizioni e peculiarità del luogo attraverso un’analisi bibliografica, storico-urbanistica e diretta di una realtà per molti aspetti diversa da quella italiana, quadro di riferimento relativo alle previsioni degli strumenti urbanistici generali e di piano attuativo come del quadro normativo: regolamento urbanistico edilizio e più specifici regolamenti e raccomandazioni per le caserme dei Vigili del Fuoco di Karlsruhe, tipologie architettoniche e soluzioni funzionali con riferimento a episodi concreti di strutture con la stessa destinazione in Germania e in Europa. E’ stata quindi affrontata la fase del metaprogetto interpretando gli aspetti emersi dalla prima fase di analisi e caratterizzata dalla verifica e congruenza di una serie di soluzioni tecnologiche, funzionali e strutturali, che hanno portato alla definitiva soluzione, qui presentata e descritta nelle tavole e nel plastico. Nell’ambito della progettazione di questa struttura il presente quadro normativo ha previsto anche la riqualificazione a parco urbano di un’estesa area verde limitrofa, di circa 20 ettari. Quest’area è stata progettata come un grande parco urbano in cui la presenza di percorsi pedonali e ciclabili, percorsi d’acqua, che richiamano un motivo già presente nelle aree verdi preesistenti e simbolicamente richiamano l’attività del Corpo dei Vigili del Fuoco, lo rendono fruibile ai cittadini. Inoltre trova la sua collocazione all’interno del parco e in prossimità della caserma un’altra struttura: la palestra. Tale palestra, necessaria all’allenamento del personale dei Vigili del Fuoco, è stata progettata come elemento di connessione tra la nuova struttura e il quartiere in cui questa si trova. La caserma infatti, grazie alla sua composizione, che rende visibili le attività svolte al suo interno e grazie agli spazi dedicati all’apprendimento e all’istruzione, progettati in modo tale da poter accogliere non solo gli addetti ai lavori, si rende completamente visitabile e aperta al pubblico, per sottolineare la forte connessione che lega il Corpo dei Vigili del Fuoco alla cittadinanza
