Non-Volatile Memory Characteristics of Submicrometre Hall Structures Fabricated in Epitaxial Ferromagnetic MnAl Films on GaAs
Hall-effect structures with submicrometre linewidths (<0.3pm) have been fabricated in ferromagnetic thin films of Mn[sub 0.60]Al[sub 0.40] which are epitaxially grown on a GaAs substrate. The MnAl thin films exhibit a perpendicular remanent magnetisation and an extraordinary Hall effect with square hysteretic behaviour. The presence of two distinct stable readout states demonstrates the potential of using ultrasmall ferromagnetic volumes for electrically addressable, nonvolatile storage of digital information
The extraordinary Hall effect in coherent epitaxial tau (Mn,Ni)Al thin films on GaAs
Ultrathin coherent epitaxial films of ferromagnetic tau(Mn,Ni)0.60Al0.40 have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs substrates. X-ray scattering and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy measurements confirm that the c axis of the tetragonal tau unit cell is aligned normal to the (001) GaAs substrate. Measurements of the extraordinary Hall effect (EHE) show that the films are perpendicularly magnetized, exhibiting EHE resistivities saturating in the range of 3.3-7.1 muOMEGA-cm at room temperature. These values of EHE resistivity correspond to signals as large as +7 and -7 mV for the two magnetic states of the film with a measurement current of 1 mA. Switching between the two magnetic states is found to occur at distinct field values that depend on the previously applied maximum field. These observations suggest that the films are magnetically uniform. As such, tau(Mn,Ni)Al films may be an excellent medium for high-density storage of binary information
Spatial structure of an individual Mn acceptor in GaAs
The wave function of a hole bound to an individual Mn acceptor in GaAs is
spatially mapped by scanning tunneling microscopy at room temperature and an
anisotropic, cross-like shape is observed. The spatial structure is compared
with that from an envelope-function, effective mass model, and from a
tight-binding model. This demonstrates that anisotropy arising from the cubic
symmetry of the GaAs crystal produces the cross-like shape for the hole
wave-function. Thus the coupling between Mn dopants in GaMnAs mediated by such

Distribution of human beta-defensin polymorphisms in various control and cystic fibrosis populations.
Abstract
Human beta defensins contribute to the first line of defense against infection of the lung. Polymorphisms in these genes are therefore potential modifiers of the severity of lung disease in cystic fibrosis. Polymorphisms were sought in the human beta-defensin genes DEFB1, DEFB4, DEFB103A, and DEFB104 in healthy individuals and cystic fibrosis (CF) patients living in various European countries. DEFB1, DEFB4, and DEFB104 were very polymorphic, but DEFB103A was not. Within Europe, differences between control populations were found for some of the frequent polymorphisms in DEFB1, with significant differences between South-Italian and Czech populations. Moreover, frequent polymorphisms located in DEFB4 and DEFB104 were not in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium in all populations studied, while those in DEFB1 were in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium. Sequencing of a monochromosomal chromosome 8 mouse-human hybrid cell line revealed signals for multiple alleles for some loci in DEFB4 and DEFB104, but not for DEFB1. This indicated that more than one DEFB4 and DEFB104 gene was present on this chromosome 8, in agreement with recent findings that DEFB4 and DEFB104 are part of a repeat region. Individual DEFB4 and DEFB104 PCR amplification products of various samples were cloned and sequenced. The results showed that one DNA sample could contain more than two haplotypes, indicating that the various repeats on one chromosome were not identical. Given the higher complexity found in the genomic organization of the DEFB4 and DEFB104 genes, association studies with CF lung disease severity were performed only for frequent polymorphisms located in DEFB1. No association with the age of first infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa or with the FEV1 percentage at the age of 11-13 years could be found
Identification of a 64 kDa heparan sulphate proteoglycan core protein from human lung fibroblast plasma membranes with a monoclonal antibody
Skipping orbits and enhanced resistivity in large-diameter InAs/GaSb antidot lattices
We investigated the magnetotransport properties of high-mobility InAs/GaSb
antidot lattices. In addition to the usual commensurability features at low
magnetic field we found a broad maximum of classical origin around 2.5 T. The
latter can be ascribed to a class of rosetta type orbits encircling a single
antidot. This is shown by both a simple transport calculation based on a
classical Kubo formula and an analysis of the Poincare surface of section at
different magnetic field values. At low temperatures we observe weak

Prognostic and therapeutic significance of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 as tumor marker in patients with pancreatic cancer
In pancreatic cancer ( PC) accurate determination of treatment response by imaging often remains difficult. Various efforts have been undertaken to investigate new factors which may serve as more appropriate surrogate parameters of treatment efficacy. This review focuses on the role of carbohydrate antigen 19- 9 ( CA 19- 9) as a prognostic tumor marker in PC and summarizes its contribution to monitoring treatment efficacy. We undertook a Medline/ PubMed literature search to identify relevant trials that had analyzed the prognostic impact of CA 19- 9 in patients treated with surgery, chemoradiotherapy and chemotherapy for PC. Additionally, relevant abstract publications from scientific meetings were included. In advanced PC, pretreatment CA 19- 9 levels have a prognostic impact regarding overall survival. Also a CA 19- 9 decline under chemotherapy can provide prognostic information for median survival. A 20% reduction of CA 19- 9 baseline levels within the first 8 weeks of chemotherapy appears to be sufficient to define a prognostic relevant subgroup of patients ('CA 19- 9 responder'). It still remains to be defined whether the CA 19- 9 response is a more reliable method for evaluating treatment efficacy compared to conventional imaging. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Basel
Ferromagnetic semiconductors
The current status and prospects of research on ferromagnetism in
semiconductors are reviewed. The question of the origin of ferromagnetism in
europium chalcogenides, chromium spinels and, particularly, in diluted magnetic
semiconductors is addressed. The nature of electronic states derived from 3d of
magnetic impurities is discussed in some details. Results of a quantitative
comparison between experimental and theoretical results, notably for Mn-based
III-V and II-VI compounds, are presented. This comparison demonstrates that the
current theory of the exchange interactions mediated by holes in the valence
band describes correctly the values of Curie temperatures T_C magnetic
anisotropy, domain structure, and magnetic circular dichroism. On this basis,
chemical trends are examined and show to lead to the prediction of
semiconductor systems with T_C that may exceed room temperature, an expectation
that are being confirmed by recent findings. Results for materials containing
magnetic ions other than Mn are also presented emphasizing that the double

Effect of acute copper sulfate exposure on olfactory responses to amino acids and pheromones in goldfish (Carassius auratus)
Exposure of olfactory epithelium to environmentally relevant concentrations of copper disrupts olfaction in fish. To examine
the dynamics of recovery at both functional and morphological levels after acute copper exposure, unilateral exposure of goldfish olfactory epithelia to 100 μM CuSO4 (10 min) was followed by electro-olfactogram (EOG) recording and scanning electron microscopy. Sensitivity to amino acids (L-arginine
and L-serine), generally considered food-related odorants, recovered most rapidly (three days), followed by that to
catecholamines(3-O-methoxytyramine),bileacids(taurolithocholic acid) and the steroid pheromone, 17,20 -dihydroxy-4-pregnen-
3-one 20-sulfate, which took 28 days to reach full recovery. Sensitivity to the postovulatory pheromone prostaglandin F2R had
not fully recovered even at 28 days. These changes in sensitivity were correlated with changes in the recovery of ciliated and microvillous receptor cell types. Microvillous cells appeared largely unaffected by CuSO4 treatment. Cilia in
ciliated receptor neurones, however, appeared damaged one day post-treatment and were virtually absent after three days but
had begun to recover after 14 days. Together, these results support the hypothesis that microvillous receptor neurones detect amino acids whereas ciliated receptor neurones were not functional and are responsible for detection of social stimuli (bile acidsandpheromones).Furthermore, differences in sensitivity to copper may be due to different transduction pathways in
the different cell types
