Grid services for the MAGIC experiment
Exploring signals from the outer space has become an observational science
under fast expansion. On the basis of its advanced technology the MAGIC
telescope is the natural building block for the first large scale ground based
high energy gamma-ray observatory. The low energy threshold for gamma-rays
together with different background sources leads to a considerable amount of
data. The analysis will be done in different institutes spread over Europe.
Therefore MAGIC offers the opportunity to use the Grid technology to setup a
distributed computational and data intensive analysis system with the nowadays
available technology. Benefits of Grid computing for the MAGIC telescope are
presented.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figures, to be published in the Proceedings of the 6th

MAGIC and the Search for Signatures of Supersymmetric Dark Matter
The 17m Imaging Air shower Cherenkov Telescope MAGIC (Roque de los Muchachos
Observatory, La Palma, Canary Islands) has recently entered its commissioning
phase. One of the main goals of the MAGIC telescope project is to provide an
unprecedented sensitivity for the detection of gamma rays with energies as low
as 30 GeV. A dedicated search for the gamma rays expected to be produced by
WIMP annihilations is a prime object of the MAGIC physics program. We consider
annihilating supersymmetric dark matter in M 87 and discuss a possible
observation strategy. New calculations concerning the extragalactic gamma ray
and neutrino backgrounds owing to cosmological neutralino annihilation are also
briefly discussed.Comment: To be published in the proceedings of the "6th UCLA Symposium on

Superdeformation: Perspectives and prospects
We present a review of the mean-field approaches describing superdeformed
states, which are currently used and/or being developed. As an example, we
discuss in more details the properties of superdeformed A~60 nuclei, and
present results of calculations for the rotational band in the doubly magic
superdeformed nucleus 32S.Comment: 12 pages, 5 EPS figures included, uses aipproc2.sty and epsf.sty.

Shell closure effects studied via cluster decay in heavy nuclei
The effects of shell closure in nuclei via the cluster decay is studied. In
this context, we have made use of the Preformed Cluster Model () of Gupta
and collaborators based on the Quantum Mechanical Fragmentation Theory. The key
point in the cluster radioactivity is that it involves the interplay of close
shell effects of parent and daughter. Small half life for a parent indicates
shell stabilized daughter and long half life indicates the stability of the
parent against the decay. In the cluster decay of trans lead nuclei observed so
far, the end product is doubly magic lead or its neighbors. With this in our
mind we have extended the idea of cluster radioactivity. We investigated decay
of different nuclei where Zirconium is always taken as a daughter nucleus,
which is very well known deformed nucleus. The branching ratio of cluster decay
and -decay is also studied for various nuclei, leading to magic or
almost doubly magic daughter nuclei. The calculated cluster decay half-life are
in well agreement with the observed data. First time a possibility of cluster
decay in nucleus is predicted
