    Non-Langevin behaviour of the uncompensated magnetisation in nanoparticles of artificial ferritin

    The magnetic behaviour of nanoparticles of antiferromagnetic ferritin has been investigated by 57Fe Mossbauer absorption spectroscopy and magnetisation measurements, in the temperature range 2.5K-250K and with magnetic fields up to 7T. Samples containing nanoparticles with an average number of Fe atoms ranging from 400 to 2500 were studied. The value of the anisotropy energy per unit volume was determined and found to be in the range 3-6 10**5 ergs/cm3, which is a value typical for ferric oxides. By comparing the results of the two experimental methods at large field, we show that, contratry to what is currently assumed, the uncompensated magnetisation of the feritin cores in the superparamagnetic regime does not follow a Langevin law. For magnetic fields below the spin-flop field, we propose an approximate law for the field and temperature variation of the uncompensated magnetisation which has so far never been applied in antiferromagnetic systems. This approach should more generally hold for randomly oriented antiferro- magnetic nanoparticles systems with weak uncompensated moments.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure

    I show that gravitational entropy can be ascribed to spacetimes containing Misner strings (the gravitational analogues of Dirac strings), even in the absence of any other event horizon (or bolt) structures.     Entropy of Rotating Misner String Spacetimes

    Using a boundary counterterm prescription motivated by the AdS/CFT conjecture, I evaluate the energy, entropy and angular momentum of the class of Kerr-NUT/bolt-AdS spacetimes. As in the non-rotating case, when the NUT charge is nonzero the entropy is no longer equal to one-quarter of the area due to the presence of the Misner string. When the cosmological constant is also non-zero, the entropy is bounded from above.Comment: Revtex, 9 pages, 3 figure

    On the treatment of threshold effects in SUSY spectrum computations

    We take a critical view of the treatment of threshold effects in SUSY spectrum computations from high-scale input. We discuss the two principal methods of (a) renormalization at a common SUSY scale versus (b) integrating out sparticles at their own mass scales. We point out problems in the implementations in public spectrum codes, together with suggestions for improvements. In concrete examples, we compare results of Isajet7.72 and Spheno2.2.3, and present the improvements done in Isajet7.73. We also comment on theoretical uncertainties.     Apparent multiple Delta m^2_32 in muon anti-neutrino and muon neutrino survival oscillations from non-standard interaction matter effect

    Neutrinos propagating through matter may participate in forward coherent neutral-current-like scattering arising from non-standard interactions as well as from the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein matter potential VeV_e. We show that at fixed long baselines through matter of constant density, the non-standard interaction potential ϵμτVe\epsilon_{\mu\tau} V_e can contribute an additional term to the oscillation phase whose sign differs for \anumu versus \numu propagation in matter. Its presence can cause different apparent Δm2\Delta m^2 to be erroneously inferred on the basis of oscillations in vacuum, with values lying above (for \anumu) or below (for \numu) the actual Δm322\Delta m^2_{32} for the case where ϵμτ\epsilon_{\mu\tau} is predominantly real-valued and of sign opposite to Δm322\Delta m_{32}^2. An NSI scenario invoking only (ϵμτ)\Re(\epsilon_{\mu\tau}) is shown to be capable of accounting for a disparity recently reported between oscillation survival for \anumu and \numu fluxes measured at 735 km735~\mathrm{km} by the MINOS experiment. Implications for mantle traversal by atmospheric neutrinos are examined. The NSI matter potential with non-maximal mixing could evade conventional atmospheric neutrino analyses which do not distinguish \numu from \anumu on an event-by-event basis.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures.     Some Comments on Gravitational Entropy and the Inverse Mean Curvature Flow

    The Geroch-Wald-Jang-Huisken-Ilmanen approach to the positive energy problem to may be extended to give a negative lower bound for the mass of asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter spacetimes containing horizons with exotic topologies having ends or infinities of the form Σg×R\Sigma_g \times {\Bbb R}, in terms of the cosmological constant. We also show how the method gives a lower bound for for the mass of time-symmetric initial data sets for black holes with vectors and scalars in terms of the mass, Z(Q,P)|Z(Q,P)| of the double extreme black hole with the same charges. I also give a lower bound for the area of an apparent horizon, and hence a lower bound for the entropy in terms of the same function Z(Q,P)|Z(Q,P)|. This shows that the so-called attractor behaviour extends beyond the static spherically symmetric case. and underscores the general importance of the function Z(Q,P)|Z(Q,P)|. There are hints that higher dimensional generalizations may involve the Yamabe conjectures.Comment: 13pp. late
