    Performance Analysis of Coded MM-ary Orthogonal Signaling Using Errors-and Erasures Decoding Over Frequency-Selective Fading Channels

    The performance of MM-ary orthogonal signaling schemes employing Reed–Solomon (RS) codes and redundant residue number system (RRNS) codes is investigated over frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels. “Errors-and-erasures” decoding is considered, where erasures are judged based on two low-complexity, low-delay erasure insertion schemes—Viterbi’s ratio threshold test (RTT) and the proposed output threshold test (OTT). The probability density functions (PDF) of the ratio associated with the RTT and that of the demodulation output in the OTT conditioned on both the correct detection and erroneous detection of MM-ary signals are derived, and the characteristics of the RTT and OTT are investigated. Furthermore, expressions are derived for computing the codeword decoding error probability of RS codes or RRNS codes based on the above PDFs. The OTT technique is compared to Viterbi’s RTT, and both of these are compared to receivers using “error-correction only” decoding over frequency-selective Rayleigh-fading channels. The numerical results show that by using “errors-and-erasures” decoding, RS or RRNS codes of a given code rate can achieve higher coding gain than that without erasure information, and that the OTT technique outperforms the RTT, provided that both schemes are operated at the optimum decision thresholds.     A Probable Approx. 2400 Year Solar Quasi-cycle in Atmospheric Delta C-14

    A 2200 to 2600 year quasi-periodicity is present in atmospheric delta C-14 records after removal of long-term trends due to the geomagnetic dipole amplitude variation. This periodicity consists of both a long-term variation of the mean and a superposed, approximately recurring pattern of century-scale variations. The strongest of these latter variations occur near maxima of the approx. 2400 year delta C-14 cycles. The residual record can be modeled to first order as an amplitude modulation of a century-scale periodic forcing function by a approx. 2400 year periodic forcing function. During the last millennium, the largest century-scale variations (occurring near the most recent 2400 year delta C-14 maximum) are known to be mainly a consequence of the pronounced Maunder, Sporer, and Wolf solar activity minima, as verified by independent proxy solar activity records. Therefore, during this period, amplitude modulation has been occurring primarily in the sun and not in the terrestrial radiocarbon system. It is therefore inferred that the approx. 2400 year forcing function is mainly solar although some secondary terrestrial feedback into the delta C-14 record is likely. This conclusion has implications for the predictability of future pronounced solar activity minima and for the interpretation of certain minor Holocene climatic variations

    Complex weights appear in Physics which are beyond a straightforward importance sampling treatment, as required in Monte Carlo calculations. This is the well-known sign problem. The complex Langevin approach amounts to effectively construct a posi\-tive distribution on the complexified manifold reproducing the expectation values of the observables through their analytical extension. Here we discuss the direct construction of such positive distributions paying attention to their localization on the complexified manifold. Explicit localized repre\-sentations are obtained for complex probabilities defined on Abelian and non Abelian groups.     The system eliminates the necessity of shielding an aircraft airframe constructed of material such as aluminum. Cooling is accomplished by passing a coolant through the aircraft airframe, the coolant acting as a carrier to remove heat from the airframe. The coolant is circulated through a heat pump and a heat exchanger which together extract essentially all of the added heat from the coolant. The heat is transferred to the aircraft fuel system via the heat exchanger and the heat pump. The heat extracted from the coolant is utilized to power the heat pump. The heat pump has associated therewith power turbine mechanism which is also driven by the extracted heat.
