    The use of prophylactic antibiotics in patients with severe acute pancreatitis remains an intensely debated topic. Although animal studies consistently demonstrated an advantage of antibiotic prophylaxis, the only two blinded randomized controlled trials could not confirm these findings. Translation of the experimental models in human clinical practice is hampered by a number of fundamental differences between experimental pancreatitis and human disease, and therefore it is highly unlikely that the pronounced benefit found in experimental pancreatitis will ever be demonstrated in human disease. Early and accurate risk stratification to identify the patient at risk for infection early in the course of the disease seems to be the greatest challenge. Until we are able to demonstrate an advantage of antibiotic prophylaxis in a high-risk human population, the absence of proven benefit and potential side effects of this strategy should be acknowledged and the use of antibiotics should be limited to the treatment of documented infection

FSW has many advantages in comparison with conventional fusion arc welding. Therefore the interest to use this technique for joining steel plates has grown. However such usage is still limited because of the lack of adequate tool materials.     In a recent issue of Critical Care, Cheng and colleagues conducted a rabbit model study that demonstrated that intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) may damage both gut anatomy and function. With only 6 hours of IAH at 25 mmHg, these authors observed an 80% reduction in mucosal blood flow, an exponential increase in mucosal permeability, and erosion and necrosis of the jejunal villi. Such dramatic findings should remind all caring for the critically ill that IAH may severely damage the normal gut barrier functions and thus may be reasonably expected to facilitate bacterial and mediator translocation. The potential contribution of IAH as a confounding factor in the efficacy of selective decontamination of the digestive tract should be considered

    A comprehensive study on the microstructure and mechanical properties of arc girth welded joints of spiral welded high strength API X70 steel pipe

    In the paper, the effect of welding technology on the microstructure and mechanical properties of girth welded joints was presented. Metallographic examinations based on light microscopy and SEM were conducted on girth welded joints of API X70 steel pipe. Research has shown that microstructure of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of MMA girth welded joints is not homogeneous and depends on the thermal history of each area during the welding process. Near the fusion line the zone is coarse, and further away there is a fine-grained zone. In the area of root passes the microstructure consists of recrystallized ferrite grains unlike to cap passes where the fine bainitic microstructure can be observed. In the case of MAG girth welded joints, the weld microstructure consists of primary austenite grains. The primary austenite boundaries serve as nucleation sites of ferrite. The microstructure of the HAZ varies continuously from a coarse—to fine-grained microstructure of the base material. The results of mechanical properties of girth welded joints are also presented. The hardness and strength of arc welded joints depend on welding filler materials as well as welding technology. The results of hardness distribution of MMA and MAG girth welded joints confirmed the results of microstructural evaluation

    R-curve evaluation of pipeline girth welds using advanced measurement techniques

    A strain-based flaw assessment procedure is recommended for girth welded pipelines subjected to large deformations. To evaluate the allowable defect dimensions, the tearing resistance needs to be characterized. This paper investigates the effect of weld metal strength mismatch on the resistance curve using Single Edge Notched Tension (SENT) specimens. Several advanced measurement techniques are applied during the tests in order to obtain a continuous measurement of crack extension and to visualize the deformation fields near the crack. The resistance curves are determined using a single specimen technique. The unloading compliance method and the potential drop method result in similar predictions of ductile crack extension, yielding similar resistance curves. Next to these measurements, the full field deformations are determined using digital image correlation. The experiments indicate that the position of the applied notch in the weld has the potential to influence the strain fields

    In this paper, results of a semi-quantitative and qualitative leaching study of chrysotile and Chrysophosphate® fibers in oxalic acid and succinate salt buffer solutions with laser microprobe mass analysis (LAMMA) and electron probe X-ray micro-analysis (EPXMA) are presented, which demonstrate clearly the potential of these sensitive surface analytical tools for the analysis of natural physico-chemically modified and depleted fibers. These results are verified with those obtained by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) for the measurement of the leached magnesium and iron concentration in solution. In order to study differences in adsorption behaviour and reaction capability between natural and chemically modified chrysotile, LAMMA-analysis was performed on fibers treated with benzo[a]pyrene, N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) and ortho-phenylene-diamine (OPDA). In correlation with biomedical investigations. this study could contribute to the elucidation of the potential sequences of fiber surface properties in relation to the biological activity and cytotoxicity

    Nonperiodic Flux to Voltage Conversion of an Arithmetic Series Array of dc SQUIDs

    A theoretical study on the voltage response function of a series array of dc SQUIDs is presented in which the elementary dc SQUID loops vary in size and, possibly, in orientation. Such series arrays of two-junction SQUIDs possess voltage response functions vs. external magnetic field B that differ substantially from those of corresponding regular series arrays with identical loop-areas, while maintaining a large voltage swing as well as a low noise level. Applications include the design of current amplifiers and quantum interference filters.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
