Hybrid Quasicrystals, Transport and Localization in Products of Minimal Sets
We consider convex combinations of finite-valued almost periodic sequences
(mainly substitution sequences) and put them as potentials of one-dimensional
tight-binding models. We prove that these sequences are almost periodic. We
call such combinations {\em hybrid quasicrystals} and these studies are related
to the minimality, under the shift on both coordinates, of the product space of
the respective (minimal) hulls. We observe a rich variety of behaviors on the
quantum dynamical transport ranging from localization to transport.Comment: 3 figures. To appear in Journal of Stat. Physic
Structure of trajectories of complex matrix eigenvalues in the Hermitian-non-Hermitian transition
The statistical properties of trajectories of eigenvalues of Gaussian complex
matrices whose Hermitian condition is progressively broken are investigated. It
is shown how the ordering on the real axis of the real eigenvalues is reflected
in the structure of the trajectories and also in the final distribution of the
eigenvalues in the complex plane.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
On ‘affective’ exceptions to sound change: an example from the Mojeño (Arawakan) kinship terminology system
This paper discusses a postulated non-sound change-based development derived from the detection of an exception to a regular segmental correspondence and shows how this proposal receives independent support from internal etymologization within the domain of kinship terms. The affricate in the Proto-Mojeño etymon *-ótse ‘grandmother’ is hypothesized to derive from affective strengthening of a fricative *s, thus modifying the expected reflex *-óse via affective or phonosymbolic affrication. The fact that the predicted fricative reflex is found when *-óse ‘grandmother’ occurs as a member of a compound for ‘mother-in-law’, a meaning not subject to affective modification, offers striking support for the hypothesis. The paper illustrates how internally structured lexical fields — where relations of partial (internal) cognation exist — such as kinship terminology systems, provide an interesting testing ground for claims on affective, non-lautgesetzlich formal modifications, given the fact that etymologically related forms belong to domains (such as ‘blood relative’ versus ‘affine relative’) that differ in crucial ways as far as the affective dispositions and attitudes of speakers are concerned
Tocantins Apiaká, Parirí and Yarumá as Members of the Pekodian Branch (Cariban)
This brief paper expands on the discussion of the evidence for including the sparsely attested Parirí and (Tocantins) Apiaká doculects as part of the Pekodian branch of the Cariban language family, within a sub-branch that includes the Arára-Ikpeng dialect cluster but excludes Bakairí. The present discussion goes beyond mere formal/semantic similarities in the comparanda and shows that both Parirí and Apiaká share a number of sporadic developments with Ikpeng and Arára, and these suggest an intermediate, shared ancestor exclusive to these languages. I also advance some original claims on the diachrony of these languages, such as the adoption of loans from non-Cariban languages, and an interesting semantic development in their innovative forms for ‘fire’. Based on this particular innovation, I conclude, tentatively, in favor of the inclusion of yet another doculect - Yarumá - in the same sub-branch
