Confining properties of 2-color QCD at finite density

We study the confining properties of QCD with two colors across the finite density phase transition. A disorder parameter detecting dual superconductivity of the QCD vacuum is used as a probe for the confinement/deconfinement phase transition.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, talk presented at Lattice 2006 (High Temperature and Density

Human tularemia in Italy. Is it a re-emerging disease?

    Get PDF
In order to evaluate whether tularemia is re-emerging in Italy, data on mortality and morbidity (obtained by the National Institute of Statistics; ISTAT), Italian cases described in the scientific literature and data concerning hospitalizations for tularemia (obtained by the National Hospital Discharge Database) were analysed. From 1979 to 2010, ISTAT reported 474 cases and no deaths. The overall number of cases obtained from the literature review was at least 31% higher than that reported by ISTAT. Moreover, the number of cases reported by ISTAT was 3·5 times smaller than hospitalized cases. The real frequency of the disease should be carefully investigated and taken into account in order to implement specific prevention measures.Tularemia is a contagious infectious disease due to Francisiella tularensis that can cause serious clinical manifestations and significant mortality if untreated. Although the frequency and significance of the disease has diminished over the last decades in Central Europe, over the past few years, there is new evidence suggesting that tularemia has re-emerged worldwide. To know the real epidemiology of the disease is at the root of correct control measures. Moreover, the number of cases reported by ISTAT was 3·5 times smaller than hospitalized cases. In Italy tularemia is sporadic, rarely endemic and self-limiting; but, although the trend of reported tularemia does not support the hypothesis of a re-emerging disease, the study demonstrates a wide underreporting of the disease. The real frequency of the disease should be carefully investigated and taken into account in order to implement specific prevention measures

Multichannel operation of an integrated acousto-optic wavelength routing switch for WDM systems

    Get PDF
Polarization independent acousto-optic tunable filters (PIAOTF's) can operate as transparent wavelength-selective crossconnects to route signals in wavelength division multiplexed optical networks. In this paper, a new low power PIAOTF is characterized as a switch in multiwavelength operation, using four equally spaced lightwave signals with wavelengths between 1546 nm and 1558 nm. Interchannel interference due to sidelobe excitation is lower than -11 dB for single wavelength switching and is equal to -6 dB in the extreme case of simultaneous switching of all wavelength channels. Sources of interport and interchannel crosstalk for single and multiple wavelength switching are identified

A General Framework for Recursive Decompositions of Unitary Quantum Evolutions

Decompositions of the unitary group U(n) are useful tools in quantum information theory as they allow one to decompose unitary evolutions into local evolutions and evolutions causing entanglement. Several recursive decompositions have been proposed in the literature to express unitary operators as products of simple operators with properties relevant in entanglement dynamics. In this paper, using the concept of grading of a Lie algebra, we cast these decompositions in a unifying scheme and show how new recursive decompositions can be obtained. In particular, we propose a new recursive decomposition of the unitary operator on NN qubits, and we give a numerical example.Comment: 17 pages. To appear in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. This article replaces our earlier preprint "A Recursive Decomposition of Unitary Operators on N Qubits." The current version provides a general method to generate recursive decompositions of unitary evolutions. Several decompositions obtained before are shown to be as a special case of this general procedur

Generalized Results on Monoids as Memory

We show that some results from the theory of group automata and monoid automata still hold for more general classes of monoids and models. Extending previous work for finite automata over commutative groups, we demonstrate a context-free language that can not be recognized by any rational monoid automaton over a finitely generated permutable monoid. We show that the class of languages recognized by rational monoid automata over finitely generated completely simple or completely 0-simple permutable monoids is a semi-linear full trio. Furthermore, we investigate valence pushdown automata, and prove that they are only as powerful as (finite) valence automata. We observe that certain results proven for monoid automata can be easily lifted to the case of context-free valence grammars.Comment: In Proceedings AFL 2017, arXiv:1708.0622

On the phase diagram of the Higgs SU(2) model

The Higgs SU(2) model with fixed Higgs length is usually believed to have two different phases at high gauge coupling (\beta), separated by a line of first order transitions but not distinuguished by any typical symmetry associated with a local order parameter, as first proved by Fradkin and Shenker. We show that in regions of the parameter space where it is usually supposed to be a first order phase transition only a smooth crossover is in fact present.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. Thermal monopoles and selfdual dyons in the Quark-Gluon Plasma

We perform a numerical study of the excess of non-abelian gauge invariant gluonic action around thermal abelian monopoles which populate the deconfined phase of Yang-Mills theories. Our results show that the excess of magnetic action is close to that of the electric one, so that thermal abelian monopoles may be associated with physical objects carrying both electric and magnetic charge, i.e. dyons. Thus, the quark gluon plasma is likely to be populated by selfdual dyons, which may manifest themselves in the heavy-ion collisions via the chiral magnetic effect. Thermodynamically, thermal monopoles provide a negative contribution to the pressure of the system.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX 4.

The synchronization problem is investigated for a new class of deterministic automata called strongly transitive. An extension to unambiguous automata is also considered

Air bio-contamination control in hospital environment by UV-C rays and HEPA filters in HVAC systems

    Get PDF
The contamination of air-handling units is a widespread phenomenon in buildings with air-conditioning systems, including hospitals. The germicide capacity of UV-C rays is known and, in the air-conditioning apparatuses, the UV-C lamps are generally located inside the air ducts. Aim of the paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of UV-C lamps when they are differently placed, i.e. in a position to directly irradiate the HEPA filters surface. We built ad hoc experimental air-conditioning systems, with HEPA filters and UV-C lamps in the two described positions. The results obtained demonstrate that, for disinfection purpose, the direct irradiation of the HEPA filters by UV-C provides better results than irradiation of the air stream and the effectiveness increases when lowering the relative humidity of the air. The survival curves of the tested microorganisms (fungi) show typical tail shaped curves (two steps survival curves). Additional tests using both HEPA filters alone, and HEPA filters plus UV lamps, have been performed measuring the air pressure drop between entrance and exit the HEPA filters and collecting air samples in order to obtain total microbial and fungal count. The results obtained suggest that, at least in experimental conditions described, the radiation on filter surface reduces significantly the microbial load and the pressure drop through the filter, compared to a situation of not-irradiated HEPA filters
