Oral History Interview: Charles E. Smith

    Get PDF
This interview is one of series conducted concerning the Oral History of Appalachia. Mr. Smith grew up in Chapmanville, WV. He describes: births and weddings in Logan County; his education; his service in the Navy; flooding; how his family raised vegetables and hogs for a living; his jobs as manager of a dairy in Logan, owning businesses such as a Chrysler dealership, a new and used furniture store, and a few others; his interest in WV Cavalry, the Civil War, and coal mining in West Virginia; an anecdote about traveling to a basketball game; some talk of food and cooking; and other topics.https://mds.marshall.edu/oral_history/1464/thumbnail.jp

Atomic oxygen effects on candidate coatings for long-term spacecraft in low earth orbit

    Get PDF
Candidate atomic oxygen protective coatings for long-term low Earth orbit (LEO) spacecraft were evaluated using the Los Alamos National Laboratory O-atom exposure facility. The coatings studied include Teflon, Al2O3, SiO2, and SWS-V-10, a silicon material. Preliminary results indicate that sputtered PTFE Teflon (0.1 micrometers) has a fluence lifetime of 10 to the 19th power O-atoms/cm (2), and sputtered silicon dioxide (0.1 micrometers), aluminum oxide (0.1 micrometers), and SWS-V-10, a silicone, (4 micrometers) have fluence lifetimes of 10 to the 20th power to 10 to the 21st power O-atoms/cm (2). There are large variations in fluence lifetime data for these coatings

X-ray Dust Scattering at Small Angles: The Complete Halo around GX13+1

The exquisite angular resolution available with Chandra should allow precision measurements of faint diffuse emission surrounding bright sources, such as the X-ray scattering halos created by interstellar dust. However, the ACIS CCDs suffer from pileup when observing bright sources, and this creates difficulties when trying to extract the scattered halo near the source. The initial study of the X-ray halo around GX13+1 using only the ACIS-I detector done by Smith, Edgar & Shafer (2002) suffered from a lack of sensitivity within 50'' of the source, limiting what conclusions could be drawn. To address this problem, observations of GX13+1 were obtained with the Chandra HRC-I and simultaneously with the RXTE PCA. Combined with the existing ACIS-I data, this allowed measurements of the X-ray halo between 2-1000''. After considering a range of dust models, each assumed to be smoothly distributed with or without a dense cloud along the line of sight, the results show that there is no evidence in this data for a dense cloud near the source, as suggested by Xiang et al. (2005). Finally, although no model leads to formally acceptable results, the Weingartner & Draine (2001) and nearly all of the composite grain models from Zubko, Dwek & Arendt (2004) give poor fits.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Alfalfa Variety Testing

    Get PDF
New varieties of alfalfa are released by commercial breeding companies each year. The Iowa State University forage breeding program, in conjunction with the Iowa Crop Improvement Association, tests commercially available varieties at five locations in Iowa, including at the Northeast Research Farm. Funding to conduct these tests is provided by entrants who pay a fee to have their varieties included. Our tests provide an unbiased comparison among cultivars deemed by the companies to be adapted to particular regions of the state

Developing a Fair Share Housing Policy for Florida

    Get PDF
This Article focuses on the prevalent problem of increasing concentrations of poverty in the inner city and social isolation of inner-city residents in major American cities caused by the mass exodus of middle class, working residents to the suburbs. The Article advocates the implementation of fair share housing programs to remedy these problems of socioeconomic isolation. Specifically, the Article argues that Florida has an optimal statutory scheme to easily introduce such a program. The Article gives a description of fair share programs, including federal efforts toward fair share housing and the state programs of California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Oregon. Finally, the Article closes with five alternatives for a fair share program suited specifically for Florida, utilizing the elements of other federal and state approaches to fair share housing

Cylindrical surface profile and diameter measuring tool and method

    Get PDF
A tool is shown having a cross beam assembly made of beams joined by a center box structure. The assembly is adapted to be mounted by brackets to the outer end of a cylindrical case. The center box structure has a vertical shaft rotatably mounted therein and extending beneath the assembly. Secured to the vertical shaft is a radius arm which is adapted to rotate with the shaft. On the longer end of the radius arm is a measuring tip which contacts the cylindrical surface to be measured and which provides an electric signal representing the radius of the cylindrical surface from the center of rotation of the radius arm. An electric servomotor rotates the vertical shaft and an electronic resolver provides an electric signal representing the angle of rotation of the shaft. The electric signals are provided to a computer station which has software for its computer to calculate and print out the continuous circumference profile of the cylindrical surface, and give its true diameter and the deviations from the ideal circle
