    Spectrum Sharing Opportunities of Full-Duplex Systems using Improper Gaussian Signaling

    Sharing the licensed spectrum of full-duplex (FD) primary users (PU) brings strict limitations on the underlay cognitive radio operation. Particularly, the self interference may overwhelm the PU receiver and limit the opportunity of secondary users (SU) to access the spectrum. Improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) has demonstrated its superiority in improving the performance of interference channel systems. Throughout this paper, we assume a FD PU pair that uses proper Gaussian signaling (PGS), and a half-duplex SU pair that uses IGS. The objective is to maximize the SU instantaneous achievable rate while meeting the PU quality-of-service. To this end, we propose a simplified algorithm that optimizes the SU signal parameters, i.e, the transmit power and the circularity coefficient, which is a measure of the degree of impropriety of the SU signal, to achieve the design objective. Numerical results show the merits of adopting IGS compared with PGS for the SU especially with the existence of week PU direct channels and/or strong SU interference channels

    The Stigma of Wasta: The Effect of Wasta on Perceived Competence and Morality

    Wasta is an Arabic word that means the use of social connections to obtain benefits that otherwise would not be provided. Wasta plays a very important role in securing of employment in Arab countries. This paper attempts to study the attribution effects of wasta on perceptions of competence and morality. The main hypotheses is that those that use wasta to obtain employment will be perceived as incompetent and immoral irrespective of their true competence and morality. Data gathered from an Egyptian sample supports the hypotheses. Thus, we conclude that wasta may tarnish the image or stigmatize its user.Nepotism, attribution theory

    A multistage hierarchical algorithm for hand shape recognition

    This paper represents a multistage hierarchical algorithm for hand shape recognition using principal component analysis (PCA) as a dimensionality reduction and a feature extraction method. The paper discusses the effect of image blurring to build data manifolds using PCA and the different ways to construct these manifolds. In_order to classify the hand shape of an incoming sign object and to be invariant to linear transformations like translation and rotation, a multistage hierarchical classifier structure is used. Computer generated images for different Irish Sign Language shapes are used in testing. Experimental results are given to show the accuracy and performance of the proposed algorithm

    Properties of reactive powder concrete incorporating silica fume and rice husk ash

    Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) is composed of very fine powders (cement, sand, and pozzolanic materials), and superplasticizers. A very dense matrix is found, and this tightness provides RPC with ultra-high strength and durability. Recently, using supplementary cementing materials associates greatly with ultra-high strength and the mix design of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). These materials could be natural, by-products or industrial wastes. They could be also less energy consuming and little time produced materials. Silica fume (SF), rice husk ash (RHA) and granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) etc. are among the major supplementary cementing materials utilized. The detailed experimental investigation done to study the impact of partial alteration of cement with SF, RHA, and GBFS on concrete properties. This study aims to a minor replacement of Portland cement by SF, RHA and GBFS to reach UHPC. Twenty-five different concrete mixes (fc =150.1 to 188.2 MPa) with and without SF, RHA and GBFS were prepared with local materials in Egypt. Concrete mixes were cast with 0, 10, 15, 20, and 25% cement replaced by either SF or RHA, and another proportions taken combination between SF and RHA or SF and GBFS or RHA and GBFS about percentages from 10 to 15%. The mixes were tested for slump flow, air content, mechanical properties and water permeability. The findings of hardened properties indicate that optimum level for partial changing of cement by SF and RHA was 20% and it is observed that though the strengths of SF or RHA concrete goes on decreasing after the 20% addition of SF or RHA. Test results have indicated that RHA exhibits lower pozzolanic activity than SF
