Self-optimizing load balancing with backhaul-constrained radio access networks
Self-Organizing Network (SON) technology aims at autonomously deploying,
optimizing and repairing the Radio Access Networks (RAN). SON algorithms
typically use Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) from the RAN. It is shown that
in certain cases, it is essential to take into account the impact of the
backhaul state in the design of the SON algorithm. We revisit the Base Station
(BS) load definition taking into account the backhaul state. We provide an
analytical formula for the load along with a simple estimator for both elastic
and guaranteed bit-rate (GBR) traffic. We incorporate the proposed load
estimator in a self-optimized load balancing algorithm. Simulation results for
a backhaul constrained heterogeneous network illustrate how the correct load
definition can guarantee a proper operation of the SON algorithm.Comment: Wireless Communications Letters, IEEE, 201
Self Organizing strategies for enhanced ICIC (eICIC)
Small cells have been identified as an effective solution for coping with the
important traffic increase that is expected in the coming years. But this
solution is accompanied by additional interference that needs to be mitigated.
The enhanced Inter Cell Interference Coordination (eICIC) feature has been
introduced to address the interference problem. eICIC involves two parameters
which need to be optimized, namely the Cell Range Extension (CRE) of the small
cells and the ABS ratio (ABSr) which defines a mute ratio for the macro cell to
reduce the interference it produces. In this paper we propose self-optimizing
algorithms for the eICIC. The CRE is adjusted by means of load balancing
algorithm. The ABSr parameter is optimized by maximizing a proportional fair
utility of user throughputs. The convergence of the algorithms is proven using
stochastic approximation theorems. Numerical simulations illustrate the
important performance gain brought about by the different algorithms.Comment: Submitted to WiOpt 201
Hierarchical Beamforming: Resource Allocation, Fairness and Flow Level Performance
We consider hierarchical beamforming in wireless networks. For a given
population of flows, we propose computationally efficient algorithms for fair
rate allocation including proportional fairness and max-min fairness. We next
propose closed-form formulas for flow level performance, for both elastic (with
either proportional fairness and max-min fairness) and streaming traffic. We
further assess the performance of hierarchical beamforming using numerical
experiments. Since the proposed solutions have low complexity compared to
conventional beamforming, our work suggests that hierarchical beamforming is a
promising candidate for the implementation of beamforming in future cellular
networks.Comment: 34 page
Ascending auctions and Walrasian equilibrium
We present a family of submodular valuation classes that generalizes gross
substitute. We show that Walrasian equilibrium always exist for one class in
this family, and there is a natural ascending auction which finds it. We prove
some new structural properties on gross-substitute auctions which, in turn,
show that the known ascending auctions for this class (Gul-Stacchetti and
Ausbel) are, in fact, identical. We generalize these two auctions, and provide
a simple proof that they terminate in a Walrasian equilibrium
Statistical Learning in Automated Troubleshooting: Application to LTE Interference Mitigation
This paper presents a method for automated healing as part of off-line
automated troubleshooting. The method combines statistical learning with
constraint optimization. The automated healing aims at locally optimizing radio
resource management (RRM) or system parameters of cells with poor performance
in an iterative manner. The statistical learning processes the data using
Logistic Regression (LR) to extract closed form (functional) relations between
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Radio Resource Management (RRM)
parameters. These functional relations are then processed by an optimization
engine which proposes new parameter values. The advantage of the proposed
formulation is the small number of iterations required by the automated healing
method to converge, making it suitable for off-line implementation. The
proposed method is applied to heal an Inter-Cell Interference Coordination
(ICIC) process in a 3G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network which is based on
soft-frequency reuse scheme. Numerical simulations illustrate the benefits of
the proposed approach.Comment: IEEE Transactions On Vehicular Technology 2010 IEEE transactions on
