    Ultrasound-guided percutaneous release procedures in the transverse carpal ligament by acupotomy: A cadaveric study

    ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine the safety and accuracy of ultrasound-guided acupotomy percutaneous loosening of the transverse carpal ligament.MethodsThe 100 upper limb specimens were equally divided into the ultrasound-guided acupotomy group (U) and the nonultrasound-guided acupotomy group (N). For the U group, we simulated ultrasound-guided acupotomy loosening of the transverse carpal ligament in a human specimen, and for the N group, we performed the loosening of the transverse carpal ligament through the same approach under nonultrasound-guided conditions. The safety and accuracy of the two methods were compared through measurement.ResultsIn the ultrasound-guided group, the injury rate of nerves, blood vessels and tendons caused by needle-knife release was 0%. In the non-ultrasound-guided group, the rate of nerve, blood vessel and tendon damage was 6 percent, 12 percent and 20 percent, respectively. χ2 test (Fisher exact test) was performed for the nerve and blood vessel damage rates in the two groups (PN > 0.05, PA < 0.05), the difference in nerve damage rates was not statistically significant, but the difference in blood vessel damage rates was statistically significant. Pearson's χ2 test was performed on the tendon injury rates of the two groups (PF < 0.05), and the difference was statistically significant. In the ultrasound-guided group, the proportion of acupotomy marks greater than or equal to half of the width of the transverse carpal ligament was 86%, and the non-ultrasound-guided group was 36%. The accuracy of the two surgical methods was tested by Pearson's χ2 test (PL < 0.05), and the difference was statistically significant. According to the measurement, the ultrasound-guided acupotomy technology had high safety and accuracy.ConclusionIn this study, we designed a new method for cutting the transverse carpal ligament under ultrasound guidance, which is different from surgery. These results indicate that this is a safe and accurate method of interventional treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome

    Associations of triglyceride levels with longevity and frailty: A Mendelian randomization analysis.

    Observational studies suggest associations of triglyceride levels with longevity and frailty. This study aimed to test whether the associations are causal. We used data from the Rugao Longevity and Ageing Study, a population-based cohort study performed in Rugao, China. A variant in the APOA5 gene region (rs662799) was used as the genetic instrument. Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were performed to examine the associations of genetically predicted triglycerides with two ageing phenotypes - longevity ( ≥95 years) and frailty (modified Fried frailty phenotype and Rockwood frailty index). C allele of rs662799 was robustly associated with higher triglyceride levels in the comparison group (β = 0.301 mmol/L per allele, p < 0.001), with an F statistic of 95.3 and R2 = 0.040. However MR analysis did not provide strong evidence for an association between genetically predicted triglyceride levels and probability of longevity (OR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.35, 1.07 per 1 mmol/L increase in triglycerides). In the ageing arm (70-84 years), genetically predicted triglyceride levels were not associated with the frailty index (β = 0.008; 95% CI: -0.013, 0.029) or the frailty phenotype (OR: 1.91; 95% CI: 0.84, 4.37). In conclusion, there is currently a lack of sufficient evidence to support causal associations of triglyceride levels with longevity and frailty in elderly populations

    Histopathological Observation of Immunized Rhesus Macaques with Plague Vaccines after Subcutaneous Infection of Yersinia pestis

    In our previous study, complete protection was observed in Chinese-origin rhesus macaques immunized with SV1 (20 µg F1 and 10 µg rV270) and SV2 (200 µg F1 and 100 µg rV270) subunit vaccines and with EV76 live attenuated vaccine against subcutaneous challenge with 6×106 CFU of Y. pestis. In the present study, we investigated whether the vaccines can effectively protect immunized animals from any pathologic changes using histological and immunohistochemical techniques. In addition, the glomerular basement membranes (GBMs) of the immunized animals and control animals were checked by electron microscopy. The results show no signs of histopathological lesions in the lungs, livers, kidneys, lymph nodes, spleens and hearts of the immunized animals at Day 14 after the challenge, whereas pathological alterations were seen in the corresponding tissues of the control animals. Giemsa staining, ultrastructural examination, and immunohistochemical staining revealed bacteria in some of the organs of the control animals, whereas no bacterium was observed among the immunized animals. Ultrastructural observation revealed that no glomerular immune deposits on the GBM. These observations suggest that the vaccines can effectively protect animals from any pathologic changes and eliminate Y. pestis from the immunized animals. The control animals died from multi-organ lesions specifically caused by the Y. pestis infection. We also found that subcutaneous infection of animals with Y. pestis results in bubonic plague, followed by pneumonic and septicemic plagues. The histopathologic features of plague in rhesus macaques closely resemble those of rodent and human plagues. Thus, Chinese-origin rhesus macaques serve as useful models in studying Y. pestis pathogenesis, host response and the efficacy of new medical countermeasures against plague

    Plasma Exfoliated Graphene: Preparation via Rapid, Mild Thermal Reduction of Graphene Oxide and Application in Lithium Batteries

    A simple, novel approach is proposed for the preparation of plasma-exfoliated graphene (PEGN) by reducing graphene oxide (GO) through a dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment in a H2 atmosphere. The surface chemistry, microstructures, and crystallinity of the prepared samples were characterized via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectrometry to determine the formation mechanism of the PEGN. The results demonstrated that the prepared PEGN had only a few layers in its structure and that most of the functional groups containing oxygen on the GO surface were removed. The PEGN exhibited a considerably higher capacity, better cycling stability, and favorable electron transfer rate for use as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. This proposed approach is fast, convenient, and inexpensive, constituting a novel means of producing graphene

    Plasma superoxide dismutase activity in relation to disability in activities of daily living and objective physical functioning among Chinese older adults

    Background: This study aimed to examine the associations of plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, an indicator of oxidative stress, with disability in activities of daily living (ADL) and objective physical functioning among Chinese older adults. Methods: We used cross-sectional data of 2223 older adults (≥65 years, including 1505 adults≥80 years) from the 2011/2012 main survey of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) and the 2012 biomarker sub-study. Plasma SOD activity was assessed by the T-SOD assay kit based on the hydroxylamine method. Outcomes included ADL disability and disability in three objective physical tasks (standing up from a chair, picking up a book from the floor, and turning around 360°). Logistic regression models were used to examine the associations of plasma SOD activity with outcomes. Results: After controlling for age and sex, compared with participants in the lowest quartile group of SOD activity, those in the highest quartile group had 31% lower odds of ADL disability (odds ratio [OR]: 0.69; 95%CI: 0.48, 0.98); 60% lower odds of disability in standing up from a chair (OR: 0.40; 95%CI: 0.25, 0.63); and 57% lower odds of disability in picking up a book from a floor (OR: 0.43; 95%CI: 0.28, 0.65). The results did not change substantially after controlling for additional covariates. We did not observe statistically significant age and sex differences. Conclusions: Overall, plasma SOD activity was associated with subjectively and objectively measured disability in Chinese older adults, highlighting the potential of SOD activity to serve as a biomarker of physical functioning

    OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D deficiency is common among older adults, but its association with physical function is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and disability in activities of daily living (ADL), mobility, and objective physical functioning among Chinese older adults. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data of 2225 older adults (≥65 years) who participated in the 2011/2012 main survey of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) and the 2012 biomarker sub-study. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured by enzyme immunoassay. Outcomes included ADL disability, mobility disability, and disability in three objective physical examinations (standing-up from a chair, picking-up a book from the floor, and turning-around 360°). RESULTS: The multiple regression models suggested that participants in the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency group had higher odds of ADL disability (OR: 4.08; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.81, 5.92), mobility disability (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.41), and disability in standing-up from a chair (OR: 2.43; 95% CI: 1.60, 3.69), picking-up a book from the floor (OR: 3.09; 95% CI: 2.07, 4.60), and turning-around 360° (OR: 3.09; 95% CI: 2.07, 4.60). Subgroup analyses revealed that some of the above associations (particularly those with mobility disability and disability in turning-around 360°) were only statistically significant among the oldest-old. CONCLUSIONS: Among the oldest-old in China, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency was associated with disability in ADL, mobility, and objective physical functioning, highlighting the importance of managing the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level to promote healthy aging

    Population ageing and mortality during 1990-2017: A global decomposition analysis.

    BackgroundAs the number of older people globally increases, health systems need to be reformed to meet the growing need for medical resources. A few previous studies reported varying health impacts of population ageing, but they focused only on limited countries and diseases. We comprehensively quantify the impact of population ageing on mortality for 195 countries/territories and 169 causes of death.Methods and findingsUsing data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 (GBD 2017), this study derived the total number of deaths and population size for each year from 1990 to 2017. A decomposition method was used to attribute changes in total deaths to population growth, population ageing, and mortality change between 1990 and each subsequent year from 1991 through 2017, for 195 countries/territories and for countries grouped by World Bank economic development level. For countries with increases in deaths related to population ageing, we calculated the ratio of deaths attributed to mortality change to those attributed to population ageing. The proportion of people aged 65 years and older increased globally from 6.1% to 8.8%, and the number of global deaths increased by 9 million, between 1990 and 2017. Compared to 1990, 12 million additional global deaths in 2017 were associated with population ageing, corresponding to 27.9% of total global deaths. Population ageing was associated with increases in deaths in high-, upper-middle-, and lower-middle-income countries but not in low-income countries. The proportions of deaths attributed to population ageing in 195 countries/territories ranged from -43.9% to 117.4% for males and -30.1% to 153.5% for females. The 2 largest contributions of population ageing to disease-specific deaths globally between 1990 and 2017 were for ischemic heart disease (3.2 million) and stroke (2.2 million). Population ageing was related to increases in deaths in 152 countries for males and 159 countries for females, and decreases in deaths in 43 countries for males and 36 countries for females, between 1990 and 2017. The decreases in deaths attributed to mortality change from 1990 to 2017 were more than the increases in deaths related to population ageing for the whole world, as well as in 55.3% (84/152) of countries for males and 47.8% (76/159) of countries for females where population ageing was associated with increased death burden. As the GBD 2017 does not provide variances in the estimated death numbers, we were not able to quantify uncertainty in our attribution estimates.ConclusionsIn this study, we found that population ageing was associated with substantial changes in numbers of deaths between 1990 and 2017, but the attributed proportion of deaths varied widely across country income levels, countries, and causes of death. Specific preventive and therapeutic techniques should be implemented in different countries and territories to address the growing health needs related to population ageing, especially targeting the diseases associated with the largest increase in number of deaths in the elderly

There is limited evidence in the form of systematic reviews and meta-analysis with regard to acupotomy treatment for TTS. This study will assess the effectiveness and safety of acupotomy therapy for TTS. To provide evidence for further enhancing the clinical curative effect on patients with TTS, this study will adopt an evidence-based medicine method to analyze and evaluate clinical RCTs in patients with TTS
