    Fluid-crystal coexistence for proteins and inorganic nanocolloids: dependence on ionic strength

    We investigate theoretically the fluid-crystal coexistence of solutions of globular charged nanoparticles like proteins and inorganic colloids. The thermodynamic properties of the fluid phase are computed via the optimized Baxter model. This is done specifically for lysozyme and silicotungstates for which the bare adhesion parameters are evaluated via the experimental second virial coefficients. The electrostatic free energy of the crystal is approximated by supposing the cavities in the interstitial phase between the particles are spherical in form. In the salt-free case a Poisson-Boltzmann equation is solved to calculate the effective charge on a particle and a Donnan approximation is used to derive the chemical potential and osmotic pressure in the presence of salt. The coexistence data of lysozyme and silicotungstates are analyzed within this scheme, especially with regard to the ionic-strength dependence of the chemical potentials. The latter agree within the two phases provided some upward adjustment of the effective charge is allowed for.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    Gas phase and surface phenomena observed with a seeded plasma

    This paper describes and discusses some recent experiments conducted with low-temperature seeded plasmas. The plasma was obtained by mixing potassium vapor with arc-heated argon. The experiments indicated two modes of steady, stable current conduction between the electrodes. In the first mode, the effect of gas phase phenomena predominated in fixing the current. Under certain conditions, a transition to a second mode of operation occurred. In this mode, the current was found to be thermionically limited, and was determined solely by electrode surface effects. A comparison between the observed voltage current characteristics and two current conduction theories is presented. Analysis of electrode temperature data indicated that the chief heat transfer mechanism was the penetration of the surface work function barrier as electrons entered or left the surface

    Research on Mechanisms of Exciting Pressure Oscillations in Ramjet Engines

    An analytical and experimental study is being made of the role of combustion in large vortical structures in the mechanism of unsteady and unstable burning in air-breathing engines. A large body of experimental evidence supports the contention that these periodic fluctuations are themselves generated by the nonsteady flow over the flame holders and other surfaces. The mechanism itself is relatively independent of the acoustic configuration of the powerplant and its installation and hence constitutes the fundamental element of the combustion instability process. Whether or not the mechanism is excited does, however, depend upon the detailed acoustic properties of the combustion chamber and its environment and in many circumstances it is apparent that non-linear acoustics plays an essential role. As a consequence, the program includes detailed analytical studies of linear and non-linear acoustics in combustion configurations as a means of coupling the instability mechanism to a particular environment. The effective separation of the instability process into i) its mechanism and ii) its environment is aimed at eventually providing means of rational scaling of laboratory size experiments

    Independent Ion Migration in Suspensions of Strongly Interacting Charged Colloidal Spheres

    We report on sytematic measurements of the low frequency conductivity in aequous supensions of highly charged colloidal spheres. System preparation in a closed tubing system results in precisely controlled number densities between 1E16/m3 and 1E19/m^3 (packing fractions between 1E-7 and 1E-2) and electrolyte concentrations between 1E-7 and 1E-3 mol/l. Due to long ranged Coulomb repulsion some of the systems show a pronounced fluid or crystalline order. Under deionized conditions we find s to depend linearily on the packing fraction with no detectable influence of the phase transitions. Further at constant packing fraction s increases sublinearily with increasing number of dissociable surface groups N. As a function of c the conductivity shows pronounced differences depending on the kind of electrolyte used. We propose a simple yet powerful model based on independent migration of all species present and additivity of the respective conductivity contributions. It takes account of small ion macro-ion interactions in terms of an effectivly transported charge. The model successfully describes our qualitatively complex experimental observations. It further facilitates quantitative estimates of conductivity over a wide range of particle and experimental parameters.Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables, Accepted by Physical Review

    Experiences of learning through collaborative evaluation from a masters programme in professional education

    This paper presents findings from a collaborative evaluation project within a masters programme in professional education. The project aimed to increase knowledge of research methodologies and methods through authentic learning where participants worked in partnership with the tutor to evaluate the module which they were studying. The project processes, areas of the course evaluated and the data collection methods are outlined. The findings focus on key themes from evaluating the effectiveness of using a collaborative evaluation approach, including: enhanced student engagement; creativity of the collaborative evaluation approach; equality between the tutor and students; and enhanced research skills. Discussion focuses on the outcomes and effectiveness of the project and tutor reflections on adopting a collaborative approach. This paper highlights lessons from the project relevant to those interested in staff-student partnership approaches and those facilitating postgraduate learning and teaching programmes and educational research courses

    Frequency of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing in urban vs. rural areas of the United States: Results from a nationally-representative sample

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Studies in the United States show that rural persons with HIV are more likely than their urban counterparts to be diagnosed at a late stage of infection, suggesting missed opportunities for HIV testing in rural areas. To inform discussion of HIV testing policies in rural areas, we generated nationally representative, population-based estimates of HIV testing frequencies in urban vs. rural areas of the United States.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Secondary analysis of 2005 and 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data. Dependent variables were self-reported lifetime and past-year HIV testing. Urban vs. rural residence was determined using the metropolitan area framework and Urban Influence Codes and was categorized as 1) metropolitan, center city (the most urban); 2) metropolitan, other; 3) non-metropolitan, adjacent to metropolitan; 4) non-metropolitan, micropolitan; and 4) remote, non-metropolitan (the most rural).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 2005 sample included 257,895 respondents. Lifetime HIV testing frequencies ranged from 43.6% among persons residing in the most urban areas to 32.2% among persons in the most rural areas (P < 0.001). Past-year testing frequencies ranged from 13.5% to 7.3% in these groups (P < 0.001). After adjusting for demographics (age, sex, race/ethnicity, and region of residence) and self-reported HIV risk factors, persons in the most remote rural areas were substantially less likely than persons in the most urban areas to report HIV testing in the past year (odds ratio 0.65, 95% CI 0.57-0.75). Testing rates in urban and rural areas did not change substantively following the 2006 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation for routine, population-based HIV testing in healthcare settings. In metropolitan (urban) areas, 11.5% (95% CI 11.2-11.8) reported past-year HIV testing in 2005 vs. 11.4% (95% CI 11.1%-11.7%) in 2009 (P = 0.93). In non-metropolitan areas, 8.7% (95% CI 8.2%-9.2%) were tested in 2005 vs. 7.7% (95% CI 7.2%-8.2%) in 2009 (P = 0.03).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Rural persons are less likely than urban to report prior HIV testing, which may contribute to later HIV diagnosis in rural areas. There is need to consider strategies to increase HIV testing in rural areas.</p
