Another Shipment of Six Short-Period Giant Planets from TESS

    Get PDF
We present the discovery and characterization of six short-period, transiting giant planets from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) -- TOI-1811 (TIC 376524552), TOI-2025 (TIC 394050135), TOI-2145 (TIC 88992642), TOI-2152 (TIC 395393265), TOI-2154 (TIC 428787891), & TOI-2497 (TIC 97568467). All six planets orbit bright host stars (8.9 <G< 11.8, 7.7 <K< 10.1). Using a combination of time-series photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations from the TESS Follow-up Observing Program (TFOP) Working Group, we have determined that the planets are Jovian-sized (RP_{P} = 1.00-1.45 RJ_{J}), have masses ranging from 0.92 to 5.35 MJ_{J}, and orbit F, G, and K stars (4753 << Teff_{eff} << 7360 K). We detect a significant orbital eccentricity for the three longest-period systems in our sample: TOI-2025 b (P = 8.872 days, ee = 0.220±0.0530.220\pm0.053), TOI-2145 b (P = 10.261 days, ee = 0.182−0.049+0.0390.182^{+0.039}_{-0.049}), and TOI-2497 b (P = 10.656 days, ee = 0.196−0.053+0.0590.196^{+0.059}_{-0.053}). TOI-2145 b and TOI-2497 b both orbit subgiant host stars (3.8 << log⁥\log g <<4.0), but these planets show no sign of inflation despite very high levels of irradiation. The lack of inflation may be explained by the high mass of the planets; 5.35−0.35+0.325.35^{+0.32}_{-0.35} MJ_{\rm J} (TOI-2145 b) and 5.21±0.525.21\pm0.52 MJ_{\rm J} (TOI-2497 b). These six new discoveries contribute to the larger community effort to use {\it TESS} to create a magnitude-complete, self-consistent sample of giant planets with well-determined parameters for future detailed studies.Comment: 20 Pages, 6 Figures, 8 Tables, Accepted by MNRA

Dialysis and pediatric acute kidney injury: choice of renal support modality

    Get PDF
Dialytic intervention for infants and children with acute kidney injury (AKI) can take many forms. Whether patients are treated by intermittent hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or continuous renal replacement therapy depends on specific patient characteristics. Modality choice is also determined by a variety of factors, including provider preference, available institutional resources, dialytic goals and the specific advantages or disadvantages of each modality. Our approach to AKI has benefited from the derivation and generally accepted defining criteria put forth by the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) group. These are known as the risk, injury, failure, loss, and end-stage renal disease (RIFLE) criteria. A modified pediatrics RIFLE (pRIFLE) criteria has recently been validated. Common defining criteria will allow comparative investigation into therapeutic benefits of different dialytic interventions. While this is an extremely important development in our approach to AKI, several fundamental questions remain. Of these, arguably, the most important are “When and what type of dialytic modality should be used in the treatment of pediatric AKI?” This review will provide an overview of the limited data with the aim of providing objective guidelines regarding modality choice for pediatric AKI. Comparisons in terms of cost, availability, safety and target group will be reviewed

Cohort Profile: Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study

    Get PDF
The Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study was established to assess the prevalence of chronic airflow obstruction, a key characteristic of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and its risk factors in adults (≄40 years) from general populations across the world. The baseline study was conducted between 2003 and 2016, in 41 sites across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, the Caribbean and Oceania, and collected high-quality pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry from 28 828 participants. The follow-up study was conducted between 2019 and 2021, in 18 sites across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. At baseline, there were in these sites 12 502 participants with high-quality spirometry. A total of 6452 were followed up, with 5936 completing the study core questionnaire. Of these, 4044 also provided high-quality pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry. On both occasions, the core questionnaire covered information on respiratory symptoms, doctor diagnoses, health care use, medication use and ealth status, as well as potential risk factors. Information on occupation, environmental exposures and diet was also collected

Photodynamics of the Molecular Ruby [Cr(ddpd)2]3+

    No full text
The introduction of strong-field ligands can enable luminescence in first-row transition-metal complexes. In this way, earth-abundant near-infrared emitters can be obtained using early 3d metals. A prime example is the molecular ruby [Cr(ddpd)2]3+ (ddpd = N,Nâ€Č-dimethyl-N,Nâ€Č-dipyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine) that can achieve high phosphorescence quantum yields at room temperature in aqueous solution. To understand these remarkable properties, here, we simulate its photodynamics in water using trajectory surface hopping on linear vibronic coupling potentials parametrized from multiconfigurational CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations. We find that after excitation to the second absorption band, a relaxation cascade through metal-centered states occurs. After an initial back-and-forth intersystem crossing with higher-lying doublet states, the complex relaxes through a manifold of quartet metal-centered states to the low-lying doublet metal-centered states which are responsible for the experimentally observed emission. These electronic processes are driven by an elongation of the Cr–ligand bond lengths as well as the twisting motion of the trans-coordinated pyridine units in the ddpd ligands. The low-lying doublet states are reached within 1–2 ps and are close in geometry to the doublet minima, thus explaining the high phosphorescence quantum yield of the molecular ruby [Cr(ddpd)2]3+

Finite-temperature Wigner phase-space sampling and temperature effects on the excited-state dynamics of 2-nitronaphthalene

    No full text
The concept of finite temperature Wigner phase-space sampling allowing the population of vibrationally excited states is introduced and employed to study temperature effects on the absorption spectrum of 2-nitronaphtalene (2NN) and its relaxation dynamics. It is found that, despite the fact that the general deactivation mechanism of 2NN after light irradiation does not change with increasing temperature, i.e., after excitation to the singlet manifold, 2NN deactivates via internal conversion in less than 100 fs and then undergoes intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold before decaying to the lowest triplet state in less than 150 fs, the intersystem crossing rate increases at higher temperatures. This increase is attributed to the appearance of a new deactivation pathway, which is not operative at lower temperatures. The present example illustrates that appropriate initial conditions beyond the idealized temperature of 0 K are indispensable to obtain reliable excited state mechanisms, which can be then related to experimental conditions

    The ANO-R Basis Set

    No full text
In this work, the new ANO-R basis set for all elements of the first six periods is introduced. The ANO-R basis set is an all-electron basis set that was constructed including scalar-relativistic effects of the exact-two component (X2C) Hamiltonian and modeling the atomic nucleus by a Gaussian charge distribution, which makes the basis set suitable for calculations of both light and heavy elements. For high accuracy, it takes advantage of the general contraction scheme and was developed at the CASSCF/CASPT2 level of theory. The distinguishing feature of the ANO-R basis set is its compactness in terms of both primitive and contracted basis functions, thus containing no superfluous functions for a given quality. An optimum number of primitive basis functions was selected based on studying the convergence toward the complete basis set limit for each element individually. The primitive basis sets were then contracted using the density-averaged atomic-natural-orbital (ANO) scheme, and suitable contraction levels were determined solely based on the natural orbital occupation numbers that describe the contribution of each natural orbital to the one-particle density matrix. Rather than following the common "split-valence n-tuple zeta plus polarization functions" structure, the resulting basis sets ANO-R0 to ANO-R3 possess a unique composition for each element, ensuring that no unnecessary functions are included while the basis sets are still balanced across the first six periods (H-Rn)
