Prediction of huge X-ray Faraday rotation at the Gd N_4,5 threshold
X-ray absorption spectra in a wide energy range around the 4d-4f excitation
threshold of Gd were recorded by total electron yield from in-plane magnetized
Gd metal films. Matching the experimental spectra to tabulated absorption data
reveals unprecedented short light absorption lengths down to 3 nm. The
associated real parts of the refractive index for circularly polarized light
propagating parallel or antiparallel to the Gd magnetization, determined
through the Kramers-Kronig transformation, correspond to a magneto-optical
Faraday rotation of 0.7 degrees per atomic layer. This finding shall allow the
study of magnetic structure and magnetization dynamics of lanthanide elements
in nanosize systems and dilute alloys.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, final version resubmitted to Phys. Rev. B, Brief

X-RAY SPECTRA AND ENERGY BAND STRUCTURE OF ALKALI FLUORIDES
Absorption spectra of alkali fluorides and alkalai-earth fluorides near the K (1 s) fluorine edge have been measured [1]. The pronounced fine structure of these spectra is attributed to transition from K fluorine core level to critical points in conduction band. II. K fluorine emission and absorption spectra are compared with K lithium absorption spectrum in LiF [2]-[4] and with K and LII,III sodium absorption spectra in NaF [5],[6]. It is marked that Coulomb interaction between excited electron and hole left behind in core level of positive ion (cation) can play an important role in determining the fine structure near the cation absorption edge. The presence of X-ray excitons makes impossible to get information about the electronic energy band structure of X-ray absorption spectra

THE FEATURES OF PHOTOIONIZATION ABSORPTION IN THE ULTRASOPT X-RAY REGION
The following results of the experimental and theoretical investigations of the spectral behavior of the photoionization cross sections in the ultrasoft X-ray region are discussed : 1. The notable depature from hydrogen-like behaviour of the atomic photoionization cross sections of the inert gases Ar, Kr and Xe ; 2. Similarity of the gross features of absorption spectra both gases and solids ; 3. Spectral behavior of absorption coefficients of Au and Bi, rare-earth metals, transition metals from Zr to Pd, and from Ti to Ni and from Ta to Au
FEATURES OF INNER ATOMIC SHELL PHOTOIONIZATION IN MOLECULES
[1] ZIMKINA

absorption molecular spectra [1], [2] are discussed : 1. Existence of strong
absorption maxima on the high energy side of ionization thresholds (in
continuum) of inner shells of atoms in molecules. 2. Similarity of the fine
structure of K (1 s) spectrum of fluorine and L (2 p) spectrum of sulphurin the
number of maxima and their energy position with respect to ionization threshold
in molecule SF6. 3. Absence of sharp rise in absorption coefficient
at the ionization threshold of inner shells of the central atom surrounded by
electronegative atoms in high symmetrical molecules (SF6,
SiF4 and others). [1] ZIMKINA (T. M.), FOMICHEV (V. A.), Dokladi
