An objective method to associate local weather extremes with characteristic circulation structures

    Get PDF
In this paper we give methods to find characteristic circulation patterns which are connected to local extreme temperature anomalies. Two data reduction techniques are applied: Legendre polynomial fitting and watershedding. For polynomial fitting a clear trend is found with respect to local temperatures. However, the trend is not distinctive enough to give clear answers on the type of circulation patterns belonging to local extremes. The main advantage of watershedding is that the physical properties of the circulation patterns are retained while the dimension of the data is largely reduced. Expert knowledge, however, is needed to model these main features as predictors

EQUILIBRIUM VERSUS DISEQUILIBRIUM IN THE MARKET FOR NON-FED CATTLE

Beef-cow inventory demand is considered in a disequilibrium model of the U.S. live non-fed cattle market. Statistical results indicated the possible presence of disequilibrium prices. However, post-model evaluation indicated that the market for non-fed cattle has not been characterized by significant disequilibrium price behavior.Demand and Price Analysis, Livestock Production/Industries,

Equalization Of QPSK Data Transmission In Specular Multipath

    Get PDF
This paper gives performance results for transversal-filter equalization of Quadri phase phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) signals with two-component multipath and demodulator phase error. An analytical expression for optimum, minimum mean-square-error tap weights in terms of the multipath and signal parameters is given. Probability of error results for no equalization and equalization with adaptive decision-feedback tap-weight adjustment are compared. The results show that significant improvement can be obtained with relatively simple equalizer structures. Copyright Ā© 1974 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc

Null sets of harmonic measure on NTA domains: Lipschitz approximation revisited

We show the David-Jerison construction of big pieces of Lipschitz graphs inside a corkscrew domain does not require its surface measure be upper Ahlfors regular. Thus we can study absolute continuity of harmonic measure and surface measure on NTA domains of locally finite perimeter using Lipschitz approximations. A partial analogue of the F. and M. Riesz Theorem for simply connected planar domains is obtained for NTA domains in space. As a consequence every Wolff snowflake has infinite surface measure.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

Screening for Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes With Proposed A1C-Based Diagnostic Criteria

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE ā€” An International Expert Committee (IEC) and the American Diabetes Asso-ciation (ADA) proposed diagnostic criteria for diabetes and pre-diabetes based on A1C levels. We hypothesized that screening for diabetes and pre-diabetes with A1C measurements would differ from using oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS ā€” We compared pre-diabetes, dysglycemia (diabetes or pre-diabetes), and diabetes identified by the proposed criteria (A1C 6.5 % for diabetes and 6.0ā€“6.4 % [IEC] or 5.7ā€“6.4 % [ADA] for high risk/pre-diabetes) with standard OGTT diagnoses in three datasets. Non-Hispanic white or black adults without known diabetes who had A1C and 75-g OGTT measurements were included from the prospective Screening for Impaired Glucose Tolerance study (n 1,581), and from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III (n 2014), and NHANES 2005ā€“2006 (n 1,111). RESULTS ā€” OGTTs revealed pre-diabetes in 35.8 % and diabetes in 5.2 % of combined study subjects. A1C provided receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve areas for diabetes of 0.79ā€“ 0.83, but ROC curve areas were 0.70 for dysglycemia or pre-diabetes. The proposed criteria missed 70 % of individuals with diabetes, 71ā€“84 % with dysglycemia, and 82ā€“94 % with pre

Vascular white matter lesions negatively correlate with brain metastases in malignant melanoma - results from a retrospective comparative analysis

    Get PDF
Brain metastasis (BM) is a major complication of different cancers. There is increasing evidence for influence of vascular factors on BM in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It is not known if the same is true for other tumors that might rely on different forms of vasculogenesis. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate a possible negative association of vascular white matter lesions and vascular risk factors (vasRF) with brain metastases in patients with melanoma

Phase transition and correlation decay in Coupled Map Lattices

For a Coupled Map Lattice with a specific strong coupling emulating Stavskaya's probabilistic cellular automata, we prove the existence of a phase transition using a Peierls argument, and exponential convergence to the invariant measures for a wide class of initial states using a technique of decoupling originally developed for weak coupling. This implies the exponential decay, in space and in time, of the correlation functions of the invariant measures
