Content Placement in Cache-Enabled Sub-6 GHz and Millimeter-Wave Multi-antenna Dense Small Cell Networks
This paper studies the performance of cache-enabled dense small cell networks
consisting of multi-antenna sub-6 GHz and millimeter-wave base stations.
Different from the existing works which only consider a single antenna at each
base station, the optimal content placement is unknown when the base stations
have multiple antennas. We first derive the successful content delivery
probability by accounting for the key channel features at sub-6 GHz and mmWave
frequencies. The maximization of the successful content delivery probability is
a challenging problem. To tackle it, we first propose a constrained
cross-entropy algorithm which achieves the near-optimal solution with moderate
complexity. We then develop another simple yet effective heuristic
probabilistic content placement scheme, termed two-stair algorithm, which
strikes a balance between caching the most popular contents and achieving
content diversity. Numerical results demonstrate the superior performance of
the constrained cross-entropy method and that the two-stair algorithm yields
significantly better performance than only caching the most popular contents.
The comparisons between the sub-6 GHz and mmWave systems reveal an interesting
tradeoff between caching capacity and density for the mmWave system to achieve
similar performance as the sub-6 GHz system.Comment: 14 pages; Accepted to appear in IEEE Transactions on Wireless

Secure Communications in Millimeter Wave Ad Hoc Networks
Wireless networks with directional antennas, like millimeter wave (mmWave)
networks, have enhanced security. For a large-scale mmWave ad hoc network in
which eavesdroppers are randomly located, however, eavesdroppers can still
intercept the confidential messages, since they may reside in the signal beam.
This paper explores the potential of physical layer security in mmWave ad hoc
networks. Specifically, we characterize the impact of mmWave channel
characteristics, random blockages, and antenna gains on the secrecy
performance. For the special case of uniform linear array (ULA), a tractable
approach is proposed to evaluate the average achievable secrecy rate. We also
characterize the impact of artificial noise in such networks. Our results
reveal that in the low transmit powerregime, the use of low mmWave frequency
achieves better secrecy performance, and when increasing transmit power, a
transition from low mmWave frequency to high mmWave frequency is demanded for
obtaining a higher secrecy rate. More antennas at the transmitting nodes are
needed to decrease the antenna gain obtained by the eavesdroppers when using
ULA. Eavesdroppers can intercept more information by using a wide beam pattern.
Furthermore, the use of artificial noise may be ineffective for enhancing the
secrecy rate.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
Wireless Power Transfer in Massive MIMO Aided HetNets with User Association
This paper explores the potential of wireless power transfer (WPT) in massive
multiple input multiple output (MIMO) aided heterogeneous networks (HetNets),
where massive MIMO is applied in the macrocells, and users aim to harvest as
much energy as possible and reduce the uplink path loss for enhancing their
information transfer. By addressing the impact of massive MIMO on the user
association, we compare and analyze two user association schemes. We adopt the
linear maximal ratio transmission beam-forming for massive MIMO power transfer
to recharge users. By deriving new statistical properties, we obtain the exact
and asymptotic expressions for the average harvested energy. Then we derive the
average uplink achievable rate under the harvested energy constraint.Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures, to appear in IEEE Transactions on

BH3 mimetic ABT-737 sensitizes colorectal cancer cells to ixazomib through MCL-1 downregulation and autophagy inhibition.
The proteasome inhibitor MLN9708 is an orally administered drug that is hydrolyzed into its active form, MLN2238 (ixazomib). Compared with Bortezomib, MLN2238 has a shorter proteasome dissociation half-life and a lower incidence and severity of peripheral neuropathy, which makes it an attractive candidate for colorectal cancer treatment. In the present study, we observed that MLN2238 induced autophagy, as evidenced by conversion of the autophagosomal marker LC3 from LC3I to LC3II, in colorectal cancer cell lines. Mcl-1, an anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family protein, was markedly elevated after treating a colorectal cancer cell line with MLN2238. We proved that inhibiting Mcl-1 expression enhances MLN2238 induced apoptosis and negatively regulates autophagy. Co-administration of BH3 mimetic ABT-737 with MLN2238 synergistically kills colorectal cancer cells through MCL-1 neutralization and autophagy inhibition. Furthermore, the synergistic killing effect of the combination therapy is correlated with P53 status in colorectal cancer. These data highlight that the combination of ABT-737 with MLN9708 is a promising therapeutic strategy for human colorectal cancer
Optimization of nutrient management improves productivity, quality and sustainability of albino tea cultivar Baiye-1
Proper nutrient management is crucially important to the sustainable development of tea production. Compared to normal green-leaf cultivars, albino tea cultivars produce green tea of superior quality characterized by high contents of amino acids as a result of the hydrolysis of chloroplast proteins at albinism. However, the advantage of albino tea cultivars was offset by inferior growth and yield performance because of low contents of chlorophylls and limited photosynthesis capacity. Our understanding about the nutrition characteristics of albino tea cultivars was very limited. A four-year field experiment was conducted to develop proper nutrient management for Baiye-1 to overcome its weakness of low productivity without a tradeoff in tea quality and environmental risks. The nutrient management schemes were formulated by optimizing the rate and ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphorus, potassium and magnesium together with substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic manures. The total amounts of nutrients in the optimized schemes were reduced by 25% compared to the local farmers’ practice (FP). Results showed that optimized rates and ratio of nutrients together with partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with rapeseed cake manure more considerably improved albino tea yield, the contents of free amino acids, total polyphenol and catechins relative to FP. Partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with commercial livestock manure decreased tea quality, which was likely caused by a dilution effect of increasing tea yield and decreasing N status of tea plants. Full organic substitution of chemical fertilizers by rapeseed cake manure improved tea yield and quality but had relatively low agronomic efficiency and profit. The effect of optimized nutrient management schemes was associated with the improvement of nutritional status in tea plants. The present work demonstrated that the optimization of nutrient management considerably improved albino tea yield, quality and profit while decreased the application rate of fertilizers and the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions
Modeling Human Performance on Statistical Word Segmentation Tasks
Harnessing the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light is an appealing approach to developing photonic technologies for future applications in optical communications and high-dimensional quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. An outstanding challenge to the widespread uptake of the OAM resource is its efficient generation. In this work we design a new device that can directly emit an OAM-carrying light beam from a low-cost semiconductor laser. By fabricating micro-scale spiral phase plates within the aperture of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL), the linearly polarized Gaussian beam emitted by the VCSEL is converted into a beam carrying specific OAM modes and their superposition states, with high efficiency and high beam quality. This new approach to OAM generation may be particularly useful in the field of OAM-based optical and quantum communications, especially for short-reach data interconnects and QKD
