    A Content-Adaptive Side Information Generation Method for Distributed Video Coding

    AbstractIn this paper, a content-adaptive method to generate side information at the block level is presented. First, motion compensated temporal interpolation (MCTI) algorithm is used between the reconstructed key frames at the decoder to acquire initial motion vectors. Second, the image is segmented and the edge of moving region is detected by obtained the residual frame between two consecutive key frames. Furthermore, hierarchical motion estimation (HME) and motion vector filter (MVF) are adopted for edge region and an adaptive motion vector filter (AMVF) is introduced in non-edge region to correct the false estimated motion vectors. The proposal is tested and compared with the results of the state-of-the-art DISCOVER codec and RD improvements on the set of test sequences are observed

    As modern medicine began to emerge at the turn of the 20th century, glycan-based therapies advanced. DNA- and protein-centered therapies became widely available. The research and development of structurally defined carbohydrates have led to new tools and methods that have sparked interest in the therapeutic applications of glycans. One of the latest omics disciplines to emerge in the contemporary post-genomics age is glycomics. In addition, to providing hope for patients and people with different health conditions through a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of common complex diseases, this new specialty in system sciences has much to offer to communities involved in the development of diagnostics and therapeutics in medicine and life sciences.This review focuses on recent developments that have pushed glycan-based therapies into the spotlight in medicine and the technologies powering these initiatives, which we can take as the most significant success of the 21st century

    Multi-Stage Tuberculosis Subunit Vaccine Candidate LT69 Provides High Protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection in Mice

    Effective tuberculosis (TB) vaccine should target tubercle bacilli with various metabolic states and confer long-term protective immunity. In this study, we constructed a novel multi-stage TB subunit vaccine based on fusion protein ESAT6-Ag85B-MPT64(190-198)-Mtb8.4-HspX (LT69 for short) which combined early expressed antigens and latency-associated antigen. The fusion protein was mixed with an adjuvant being composed of N, N’-dimethyl-N, N’-dioctadecylammonium bromide (DDA) and polyriboinosinic polyribocytidylic acid (PolyI:C) to construct subunit vaccine, whose immunogenicity and protective ability were evaluated in C57BL/6 mice. The results showed that LT69 had strong immunogenicity and high protective effect against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) H37Rv aerosol challenge. Low-dose (2 μg) of LT69 generated long-term immune memory responses and provided effective protection, which was even higher than traditional vaccine BCG did at 30 weeks post the last vaccination.     The modification of individual factors on association between serum 25(OH)D and incident type 2 diabetes: Results from a prospective cohort study

    Several epidemiological studies have suggested an association between low vitamin D status and increased risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). This study aimed to explore the dose-response relationship of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations with incident T2D and the interaction between serum 25(OH)D with individual factors on T2D risk. A total of 1,926 adults without diabetes (mean age: 52.08 ± 13.82 years; 42% men) were prospectively followed for 36 months. Cox proportional hazards model and restricted cubic spline analysis were performed to assess the association and dose-response relationship between serum 25(OH)D and T2D incidence. Both additive and multiplicative interactions were calculated between serum 25(OH)D and individual factors. The net reclassification index (NRI) was used to evaluate the improvement of risk prediction of T2D by adding serum 25(OH)D to traditional risk factors. There were 114 new T2D cases over a mean follow-up of 36 months. Serum 25(OH)D was not associated with T2D incidence, and no significant dose-response relationship was found in the total population. However, stratified analyses suggested a non-linear inverse relationship among individuals with baseline fasting plasma glucose (FPG) <5.6 mmol/L (Poverall = 0.061, Pnon–linear = 0.048). And a significant multiplicative interaction was observed between serum 25(OH)D and FPG on T2D risk (P = 0.005). In addition, we found a significant additive interaction of low serum 25(OH)D with older age (RERI = 0.897, 95% CI: 0.080–1.714; AP = 0.468, 95% CI: 0.054–0.881), male (AP = 0.441, 95% CI: 0.010–0.871), and insufficient physical activity (RERI = 0.875, 95% CI: 0.204–1.545; AP = 0.575, 95% CI: 0.039–1.111) on T2D risk. Significant additive interactions were also observed between vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency with male, overweight/obesity, and insufficient physical activity on T2D risk. Moreover, adding low serum 25(OH)D to a model containing established risk factors yielded significant improvements in the risk reclassification of T2D (NRI = 0.205, 95% CI: 0.019–0.391). Our results indicated a non-linear relationship of serum 25(OH)D concentrations with T2D risk among individuals with normal FPG and additive interactions of serum 25(OH)D with gender, overweight/obesity, and physical activity on T2D risk, suggesting the importance of outdoor exercise

    Psychological symptoms in Chinese nurses may be associated with predisposition to chronic disease: A cross-sectional study of suboptimal health status

Background: Suboptimal health status (SHS) is a reversible state between ideal health and illness and it can be effectively reversed by risk prediction, disease prevention, and personalized medicine under the global background of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM) concepts. More and more Chinese nurses have been troubled by psychological symptoms (PS). The correlation between PS and SHS is unclear in nurses. The purpose of current study is to investigate the prevalence of SHS and PS in Chinese nurses and the relationship between SHS and PS along with predisposing factors as well as to discuss the feasibility of improving health status and preventing diseases according to PPPM concepts in Chinese nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with the cluster sampling method among 9793 registered nurses in Foshan city, China. SHS was evaluated with the Suboptimal Health Status Questionnaire-25 (SHSQ-25). Meanwhile, the PS of depression and anxiety were evaluated with Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) self-assessment questionnaires. The relationship between PS and SHS in Chinese nurses was subsequently analyzed. Results: Among the 9793 participants, 6107 nurses were included in the final analysis. The prevalence of SHS in the participants was 74.21% (4532/6107) while the symptoms of depression and anxiety were 47.62% (2908/6107) and 24.59% (1502/6107) respectively. The prevalence of SHS in the participants with depression and anxiety was significantly higher than those without the symptoms of depression (83.3% vs 16.7%, P \u3c 0.001) and anxiety (94.2% vs 5.8%, P \u3c 0.0001). The ratio of exercise habit was significantly lower than that of non-exercise habit (68.8% vs 78.4%, P \u3c 0.001) in SHS group. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of SHS and PS in Chinese nurses. PS in Chinese nurses are associated with SHS. Physical exercise is a protective factor for SHS and PS so that the exercise should be strongly recommended as a valuable preventive measure well in the agreement with PPPM philosophy. Along with SDS and SAS, SHSQ-25 should also be highly recommended and applied as a novel predictive/preventive tool for the health measures from the perspectives of PPPM in view of susceptible population and individual screening, the predisposition to chronic disease preventing, personalization of intervention, and the ideal health state restoring

    The settling behavior of quartz using chitosan as flocculant

    The settling behavior of quartz using chitosan as flocculant has been studied and the mechanism has been discussed. The sedimentation results show that pH has an influence on the settling behavior of quartz particles and the sedimentation velocity is more quickly at acidic pH range. Chitosan is a useful flocculant for the settling of quartz but its flocculation effect is influenced greatly by pH. The sedimentation velocity of quartz is quickly and the volume of sediment is large when chitosan was added at pH 9. The reason is that chitosan is only sparingly soluble in water at pH 9, thus the adsorption amount is large and produce strongly flocculation effect. However, when the pH was changed from 9 to 3, the adsorbed chitosan desorption from quartz surface and the flocculation effect disappeared. The flocs were disorganized to the particles and the sediment can be consolidated to significantly higher densities

    An Improved Kernelized Correlation Filter Based Visual Tracking Method

    Correlation filter based trackers have received great attention in the field of visual target tracking, which have shown impressive advantages in terms of accuracy, robustness, and speed. However, there are still some challenges that exist in the correlation filter based methods, such as target scale variation and occlusion. To deal with these problems, an improved kernelized correlation filter (KCF) tracker is proposed, by employing the GM(1,1) grey model, the interval template matching method, and multiblock scheme. In addition, a strict template update strategy is presented in the proposed method to accommodate the appearance change and avoid template corruption. Finally, some experiments are conducted. The proposed method is compared with the top state-of-the-art trackers, and all the tracking algorithms are evaluated on the object tracking benchmark. The experimental results demonstrate obvious improvements of the proposed KCF-based visual tracking method
