    Robust fault detection for networked systems with distributed sensors

Since the bandwidth of the communication channel is limited, packets from different sensors may be dropped with different missing rates during the transmission. Therefore, a diagonal matrix is introduced to describe the multiple packet dropout phenomenon and the parameter uncertainties are supposed to reside in a polytope. The aim is to design a robust fault detection filter such that, for all probabilistic packet dropouts, all unknown inputs and admissible uncertain parameters, the error between the residual (generated by the fault detection filter) and the fault signal is made as small as possible. Two parameter-dependent approaches are proposed to obtain less conservative results. The existence of the desired fault detection filter can be determined from the feasibility of a set of linear matrix inequalities that can be easily solved by the efficient convex optimization method.     Event-based recursive distributed filtering over wireless sensor networks

    In this technical note, the distributed filtering problem is investigated for a class of discrete time-varying systems with an event-based communication mechanism. Each intelligent sensor node transmits the data to its neighbors only when the local innovation violates a predetermined Send-on-Delta (SoD) data transmission condition. The aim of the proposed problem is to construct a distributed filter for each sensor node subject to sporadic communications over wireless networks. In terms of an event indicator variable, the triggering information is utilized so as to reduce the conservatism in the filter analysis. An upper bound for the filtering error covariance is obtained in form of Riccati-like difference equations by utilizing the inductive method. Subsequently, such an upper bound is minimized by appropriately designing the filter parameters iteratively, where a novel matrix simplification technique is developed to handle the challenges resulting from the sparseness of the sensor network topology and filter structure preserving issues.     Event-based H∞ consensus control of multi-agent systems with relative output feedback: The finite-horizon case

    In this technical note, the H∞ consensus control problem is investigated over a finite horizon for general discrete time-varying multi-agent systems subject to energy-bounded external disturbances. A decentralized estimation-based output feedback control protocol is put forward via the relative output measurements. A novel event-based mechanism is proposed for each intelligent agent to utilize the available information in order to decide when to broadcast messages and update control input. The aim of the problem addressed is to co-design the time-varying controller and estimator parameters such that the controlled multi-agent systems achieve consensus with a disturbance attenuation level γ over a finite horizon [0,T]. A constrained recursive Riccati difference equation approach is developed to derive the sufficient conditions under which the H∞ consensus performance is guaranteed in the framework of event-based scheme. Furthermore, the desired controller and estimator parameters can be iteratively computed by resorting to the Moore-Penrose pseudo inverse. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed event-based H∞ consensus control strategy is demonstrated in the numerical simulation

    Localized-density-matrix, segment-molecular-orbitals and poly(p-phenylenevinylene) aggregates

    The segment-molecular-orbital representation is developed and incorporated into the recently developed linear-scaling localized-density-matrix method. The entire system is divided into many segments, and the molecular orbitals of all segments form the basis functions of the segment-molecular-orbital representation. Introduction of different cutoff lengths for different segment-molecular-orbitals leads to a drastic reduction of the computational cost. As a result, the modified localized-density-matrix method is employed to investigate the optical responses of large Poly(p-phenylenevinylene) aggregates. In particular, the interchain excitations are studied.     Minimum-variance recursive filtering over sensor networks with stochastic sensor gain degradation: Algorithms and performance analysis

    This paper is concerned with the minimum variance filtering problem for a class of time-varying systems with both additive and multiplicative stochastic noises through a sensor network with a given topology. The measurements collected via the sensor network are subject to stochastic sensor gain degradation, and the gain degradation phenomenon for each individual sensor occurs in a random way governed by a random variable distributed over the interval [0, 1]. The purpose of the addressed problem is to design a distributed filter for each sensor such that the overall estimation error variance is minimized at each time step via a novel recursive algorithm. By solving a set of Riccati-like matrix equations, the parameters of the desired filters are calculated recursively. The performance of the designed filters is analyzed in terms of the boundedness and monotonicity. Specifically, sufficient conditions are obtained under which the estimation error is exponentially bounded in mean square. Moreover, the monotonicity property for the error variance with respect to the sensor gain degradation is thoroughly discussed.     Effects of ceftiofur sodium liposomes on free radical formation in mice

    To examine the effects of ceftiofur sodium liposomes on the free radical formation in liver of mice, 24 mice were assigned randomly into three groups, i.e., 1) ceftiofur sodium; 2) ceftiofur sodium liposomes and 3) physiological saline. Treatments were applied via intraperitoneal injections for 7 days. At the end of the treatment period, animals were euthanized and liver collected for analysis of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and the ability of liver tissue to suppress hydroxyl radical formation. Ceftiofur sodium liposomes-treated mice had higher activity of SOD than ceftiofur sodium- and saline-treated mice; however, MDA content and the ability of liver tissue to suppress hydroxyl radical formation did not reach statistical significance among groups. It was concluded that ceftiofur sodium liposomes can improve the SOD activity compared to ceftiofur alone in mice

    Sequence variation in TgROP7 gene among Toxoplasma gondii isolates from different hosts and geographical regions

    Toxoplasma gondii can infect a wide range of hosts including mammals and birds, causing toxoplasmosis which is one of the most common parasitic zoonoses worldwide. The present study examined sequence variation in rhoptry 7 (ROP7) gene among different T. gondii isolates from different hosts and geographical localities. Phylogenetic analysis of the examined T. gondii isolates was conducted using the maximum likelihood (ML) method. Sequence analysis revealed that 60 nucleotide positions were variable in the ROP7 gene sequences among the 19 examined T. gondii isolates, corresponding to sequence variations of 0 to 1.7%, which occurred at the first, second and third codons. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that sequence variation in ROP7 gene was low among the examined T. gondii isolates from different hosts and geographical localities, and that the ROP7 sequence was not suitable as genetic marker for the differentiation of T. gondii isolates. The results of the present study suggest that ROP7 gene may be a suitable vaccine candidate.Key words: Sequence variation, rhoptry 7 (ROP7) gene, Toxoplasma gondii, toxoplasmosis, phylogenetic analysis

    Spectral weight transfer in a disorder-broadened Landau level

    In the absence of disorder, the degeneracy of a Landau level (LL) is N=BA/Ï•0N=BA/\phi_0, where BB is the magnetic field, AA is the area of the sample and Ï•0=h/e\phi_0=h/e is the magnetic flux quantum. With disorder, localized states appear at the top and bottom of the broadened LL, while states in the center of the LL (the critical region) remain delocalized. This well-known phenomenology is sufficient to explain most aspects of the Integer Quantum Hall Effect (IQHE) [1]. One unnoticed issue is where the new states appear as the magnetic field is increased. Here we demonstrate that they appear predominantly inside the critical region. This leads to a certain ``spectral ordering'' of the localized states that explains the stripes observed in measurements of the local inverse compressibility [2-3], of two-terminal conductance [4], and of Hall and longitudinal resistances [5] without invoking interactions as done in previous work [6-8].Comment: 5 pages 3 figure

    Genetic diversity among Toxoplasma gondii isolates from different hosts and geographical locations revealed by analysis of ROP13 gene sequences

    Toxoplasma gondii can infect almost all the warm-blooded animals and human beings, causing serious public health problems and economic losses worldwide. Rhoptry protein 13 (ROP13) plays some roles in the invasion process of T. gondii. In this study, sequence variation in ROP13 gene among 14 T. gondii isolates from different geographical locations and hosts was examined. The ROP13 gene was amplified from individual isolates and sequenced. Results show that the length of the ROP13 sequences was 1203 bp. In total, there were 44 variable nucleotide positions in the ROP13 sequences, and sequence variations were 0.1 to 2.0% among the 14 examined T. gondii isolates, representing higher rate in transversion than in transition. Intra-specific nucleotide variations were mainly at the second codon positions. Phylogenetic analysis of the 14 examined T. gondii isolates indicate that the ROP13 sequence was not a suitable genetic marker to differentiate T. gondii isolates of different genotypes from different hosts and geographical regions. Low variation in ROP13 gene sequence may suggest that ROP13 gene could represent a good vaccine candidate against toxoplasmosis.Key words: Toxoplasma gondii, toxoplasmosis, rhpotry protein 13 (ROP13), sequence variation, phylogenetic analysis
