Iterative Regularization for Learning with Convex Loss Functions
We consider the problem of supervised learning with convex loss functions and
propose a new form of iterative regularization based on the subgradient method.
Unlike other regularization approaches, in iterative regularization no
constraint or penalization is considered, and generalization is achieved by
(early) stopping an empirical iteration. We consider a nonparametric setting,
in the framework of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, and prove finite sample
bounds on the excess risk under general regularity conditions. Our study
provides a new class of efficient regularized learning algorithms and gives
insights on the interplay between statistics and optimization in machine
learning
Design of Second-Order Sliding Mode Guidance Law Based on the Nonhomogeneous Disturbance Observer
Considering the guidance problem of relative motion of missile target without the dynamic characteristics of missile autopilot in the interception planar, non-homogeneous disturbance observer is applied for finite-time estimation with respect to the target maneuvering affecting the guidance performance. Two guidance laws with finite-time convergence are designed by using a fast power rate reaching law and the prescribed sliding variable dynamics. The nonsingular terminal sliding mode surface is selected to improve dynamic characteristics of missile autopilot. Furthermore, the finite-time guidance law with dynamic delay characteristics is designed for the target maneuvering through adopting variable structure dynamic compensation. The simulation results demonstrate that, for different target maneuvering, the proposed guidance laws can restrain the sliding mode chattering problem effectively and make the missile hit the maneuvering target quickly and accurately with condition of corresponding assumptions
An exTS based Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm for prognostics and tool condition monitoring.
International audienceThe growing interest in predictive maintenance makes industrials and researchers turning themselves to artificial intelligence methods for fulfilling the tasks of condition monitoring and prognostics. Within this frame, the general purpose of this paper is to investigate the capabilities of an Evolving eXtended Takagi Sugeno (exTS) based neuro-fuzzy algorithm to predict the tool condition in high-speed machining conditions. The performance of evolving Neuro-Fuzzy model is compared with an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and a Multiple Regression Model (MRM) in term of accuracy and reliability through a case study of tool condition monitoring. The Complexity of Standing Postural Control in Older Adults: A Modified Detrended Fluctuation Analysis Based upon the Empirical Mode Decomposition Algorithm
Human aging into senescence diminishes the capacity of the postural control system to adapt to the stressors of everyday life. Diminished adaptive capacity may be reflected by a loss of the fractal-like, multiscale complexity within the dynamics of standing postural sway (i.e., center-of-pressure, COP). We therefore studied the relationship between COP complexity and adaptive capacity in 22 older and 22 younger healthy adults. COP magnitude dynamics were assessed from raw data during quiet standing with eyes open and closed, and complexity was quantified with a new technique termed empirical mode decomposition embedded detrended fluctuation analysis (EMD-DFA). Adaptive capacity of the postural control system was assessed with the sharpened Romberg test. As compared to traditional DFA, EMD-DFA more accurately identified trends in COP data with intrinsic scales and produced short and long-term scaling exponents (i.e., αShort, αLong) with greater reliability. The fractal-like properties of COP fluctuations were time-scale dependent and highly complex (i.e., αShort values were close to one) over relatively short time scales. As compared to younger adults, older adults demonstrated lower short-term COP complexity (i.e., greater αShort values) in both visual conditions (p>0.001). Closing the eyes decreased short-term COP complexity, yet this decrease was greater in older compared to younger adults (p<0.001). In older adults, those with higher short-term COP complexity exhibited better adaptive capacity as quantified by Romberg test performance (r2 = 0.38, p<0.001). These results indicate that an age-related loss of COP complexity of magnitude series may reflect a clinically important reduction in postural control system functionality as a new biomarker
The Study of Portable Remote Multi-life-parameter Monitoring Network
Abstract-With the development of modern signal processing and computer network technology, it brings new challenges to remote health care structure. This paper discusses a prototype which realizes the functions of physiological signal collection and calculation, GPS global positioning, and data transmission through GPRS. The new type of portable multi-life-parameter physiologic monitoring terminal is based on embedded design method. It consists of physiological signal collection unit, GPS unit, data storage unit, data analysis unit, LCD (320*240) display unit and data communication unit. The physiological signal collection unit includes ECG, temperature, blood pressure and blood sugar part. The server system deals with physiological database, user information, interacting of physician-patient with audio and video, computer automatic diagnosis, wired or GPRS data transmission. We expect to solve the shortcoming of poor operability, large volume and high price of the traditional biological monitoring devices. Multi-life-parameter of the patients can be monitored remotely and wirelessly, with the advantages of good operability, strong scalability, small size, low cost, high reliability and real-time processing
Behavioral/Cognitive Acute and Long-Term Suppression of Feeding Behavior by POMC Neurons in the Brainstem and Hypothalamus, Respectively
POMC-derived melanocortins inhibit food intake. In the adult rodent brain, POMC-expressing neurons are located in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) and the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), but it remains unclear how POMC neurons in these two brain nuclei regulate feeding behavior and metabolism differentially. Using pharmacogenetic methods to activate or deplete neuron groups in separate brain areas, in the present study, we show that POMC neurons in the ARC and NTS suppress feeding behavior at different time scales. Neurons were activated using the DREADD (designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs) method. The evolved human M3-muscarinic receptor was expressed in a selective population of POMC neurons by stereotaxic infusion of Cre-recombinase–dependent, adenoassociated virus vectors into the ARC or NTS of POMC-Cre mice. After injection of the human M3-muscarinic receptor ligand clozapine-N-oxide (1 mg/kg, i.p.), acute activation of NTS POMC neurons produced an immediate inhibition of feeding behavior. In contrast, chronic stimulation was required for ARC POMC neurons to suppress food intake. Using adeno-associated virus delivery of the diphtheria toxin receptor gene, we found that diphtheria toxin–induced ablation of POMC neurons in the ARC but not the NTS, increased food intake, reduced energy expenditure, and ultimately resulted in obesity and metabolic and endocrine disorders. Our results reveal different behavioral functions of POMC neurons in the ARC and NTS, suggesting that POMC neurons regulate feeding and energy homeostasis by integrating long-term adiposity signals from the hypothalamus and short-term satiety signals from the brainstem
The comparison between effects of Taichi and conventional exercise on functional mobility and balance in healthy older adults: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis
BackgroundTaichi is beneficial for functional mobility and balance in older adults. However, such benefits of Taichi when comparing to conventional exercise (CE) are not well understood due to large variance in study protocols and observations.MethodsWe reviewed publications in five databases. Eligible studies that examined the effects of Taichi on the outcomes of functional mobility and balance in healthy older adults as compared to CE were included. Subgroup analyses compared the effects of different types of CE (e.g., single and multiple-type exercise) and different intervention designs (e.g., Taichi types) on those outcomes (Registration number: CRD42022331956).ResultsTwelve studies consisting of 2,901 participants were included. Generally, compared to CE, Taichi induced greater improvements in the performance of Timed-Up-and-Go (SMD = −0.18, [−0.33 to −0.03], p = 0.040, I2 = 59.57%), 50-foot walking (MD = −1.84 s, [−2.62 to −1.07], p < 0.001, I2 = 0%), one-leg stance with eyes open (MD = 6.00s, [2.97 to 9.02], p < 0.001, I2 = 83.19%), one-leg stance with eyes closed (MD = 1.65 s, [1.35 to 1.96], p < 0.001, I2 = 36.2%), and functional reach (SMD = 0.7, [0.32 to 1.08], p < 0.001, I2 = 86.79%) tests. Subgroup analyses revealed that Taichi with relatively short duration (<20 weeks), low total time (≤24 h), and/or using Yang-style, can induce significantly greater benefits for functional mobility and balance as compared to CE. Uniquely, Taichi only induced significantly greater improvements in Timed-Up-and-Go compared to single- (SMD = −0.40, [−0.55 to −0.24], p < 0.001, I2 = 6.14%), but not multiple-type exercise. A significant difference between the effects of Taichi was observed on the performance of one-leg stance with eyes open when compared to CE without balance (MD = 3.63 s, [1.02 to 6.24], p = 0.006, I2 = 74.93%) and CE with balance (MD = 13.90s, [10.32 to 17.48], p < 0.001, I2 = 6.1%). No other significant difference was shown between the influences of different CE types on the observations.ConclusionTaichi can induce greater improvement in functional mobility and balance in older adults compared to CE in a more efficient fashion, especially compared to single-type CE. Future studies with more rigorous design are needed to confirm the observations here
