    Self-healing dielectric elastomers for damage-Tolerant actuation and energy harvesting

    The actuation and energy-harvesting performance of dielectric elastomers are strongly related to their intrinsic electrical and mechanical properties. For future resilient smart transducers, a fast actuation response, efficient energy-harvesting performance, and mechanical robustness are key requirements. In this work, we demonstrate that poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) (SBS) can be converted into a self-healing dielectric elastomer with high permittivity and low dielectric loss, which can be deformed to large mechanical strains; these are key requirements for actuation and energy-harvesting applications. Using a one-step click reaction at room temperature for 20 min, methyl-3-mercaptopropionate (M3M) was grafted to SBS and reached 95.2% of grafting ratios. The resultant M3M–SBS can be deformed to a high mechanical strain of 1000%, with a relative permittivity of εr = 7.5 and a low tan δ = 0.03. When used in a dielectric actuator, it can provide 9.2% strain at an electric field of 39.5 MV m–1 and can also generate an energy density of 11 mJ g–1 from energy harvesting. After being subjected to mechanical damage, the self-healed elastomer can recover 44% of its breakdown strength during energy harvesting. This work demonstrates a facile route to produce self-healing, high permittivity, and low dielectric loss elastomers for both actuation and energy harvesting, which is applicable to a wide range of diene elastomer systems

    Potential of Core-Collapse Supernova Neutrino Detection at JUNO

    JUNO is an underground neutrino observatory under construction in Jiangmen, China. It uses 20kton liquid scintillator as target, which enables it to detect supernova burst neutrinos of a large statistics for the next galactic core-collapse supernova (CCSN) and also pre-supernova neutrinos from the nearby CCSN progenitors. All flavors of supernova burst neutrinos can be detected by JUNO via several interaction channels, including inverse beta decay, elastic scattering on electron and proton, interactions on C12 nuclei, etc. This retains the possibility for JUNO to reconstruct the energy spectra of supernova burst neutrinos of all flavors. The real time monitoring systems based on FPGA and DAQ are under development in JUNO, which allow prompt alert and trigger-less data acquisition of CCSN events. The alert performances of both monitoring systems have been thoroughly studied using simulations. Moreover, once a CCSN is tagged, the system can give fast characterizations, such as directionality and light curve

    Detection of the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with JUNO

    As an underground multi-purpose neutrino detector with 20 kton liquid scintillator, Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is competitive with and complementary to the water-Cherenkov detectors on the search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). Typical supernova models predict 2-4 events per year within the optimal observation window in the JUNO detector. The dominant background is from the neutral-current (NC) interaction of atmospheric neutrinos with 12C nuclei, which surpasses the DSNB by more than one order of magnitude. We evaluated the systematic uncertainty of NC background from the spread of a variety of data-driven models and further developed a method to determine NC background within 15\% with {\it{in}} {\it{situ}} measurements after ten years of running. Besides, the NC-like backgrounds can be effectively suppressed by the intrinsic pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) capabilities of liquid scintillators. In this talk, I will present in detail the improvements on NC background uncertainty evaluation, PSD discriminator development, and finally, the potential of DSNB sensitivity in JUNO

    Real-time Monitoring for the Next Core-Collapse Supernova in JUNO

    Core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the Universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the SN burst is a unique opportunity to realize the multi-messenger observation of the CCSN events. In this work, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to the pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), which is a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed with both the prompt monitors on the electronic board and online monitors at the data acquisition stage, in order to ensure both the alert speed and alert coverage of progenitor stars. By assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system can be sensitive to the pre-SN neutrinos up to the distance of about 1.6 (0.9) kpc and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kpc for a progenitor mass of 30M⊙M_{\odot} for the case of normal (inverted) mass ordering. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by using the accumulated event anisotropy of the inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos, which, along with the early alert, can play important roles for the followup multi-messenger observations of the next Galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

    Characterizing Merkel Cell Polyomavirus Life Cycle Regulators and Viral Encoded Circular RNAs

    This dissertation, initiated in 2018, delves into the characterization of viral circular RNAs (circRNAs) and investigates the regulators of the Merkel Cell polyomavirus (MCV) life cycle. In Chapter 2, we examined Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) circRNAs, which are expressed in infection-associated diseases. The expression of these circRNAs fluctuates based on the viral life cycle, and they are incorporated into viral particles for pre-emptive delivery. This hints at their potential function in the early phases of virus infection. Chapter 3 discusses our exploration of circMCV-T, which reveals the dynamic interplay between MCV linear RNA, circRNA, and miRNA. This insight deepens our understanding of the intricate relationships between these different RNA types in the context of MCV infection. Finally, in Chapter 4, we explore several of MCV’s self-encoded viral restriction mechanisms, designed to favor viral latency over lytic replication. Our findings shed light on these intricate, latency-promoting mechanisms, which can now be studied using advanced recombinase technology. Overall, the work comprising this dissertation significantly enhances our understanding of viral circRNAs and elucidates the intricate interactions of various RNA types within the MCV life cycle. Furthermore, it has facilitated the development of effective tools for MCV research. As such, this work not only deepens our knowledge in this field but also opens up promising avenues for future exploration

    Parallel kinematic mechanisms for distributed actuation of future structures

    Future machines will require distributed actuation integrated with load-bearing structures, so that they are lighter, move faster, use less energy, and are more adaptable. Good examples are shape-changing aircraft wings which can adapt precisely to the ideal aerodynamic form for current flying conditions, and light but powerful robotic manipulators which can interact safely with human co-workers. A 'tensegrity structure' is a good candidate for this application due to its potentially excellent stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio and a multi-element structure into which actuators could be embedded. This paper presents results of an analysis of an example practical actuated tensegrity structure consisting of 3 ‘unit cells’. A numerical method is used to determine the stability of the structure with varying actuator length, showing how four actuators can be used to control movement in three degrees of freedom as well as simultaneously maintaining the structural pre-load. An experimental prototype has been built, in which 4 pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) are embedded in one unit cell. The PAMs are controlled antagonistically, by high speed switching of on-off valves, to achieve control of position and structure pre-load. Experimental and simulation results are presented, and future prospects for the approach are discussed

    Spatially Engraving Morphological Structure on Polymeric Surface by Ion Beam Milling

    Polymer surface patterning and modification at the micro/nano scale has been discovered with great impact in applications such as microfluidics and biomedical technologies. We propose a highly efficient fabricating strategy, to achieve a functional polymer surface, which has control over the surface roughness. The key development in this fabrication method is the polymer positive diffusion effect (PDE) for an ion-bombarded polymeric hybrid surface through focused ion beam (FIB) technology. The PDE is theoretically explored by introducing a positive diffusion term into the classic theory. The conductivity-induced PDE constant is discussed as functions of substrates conductivity, ion energy and flux. The theoretical results agree well with the experiential results on the conductivity-induced PDE, and thus yield good control over roughness and patterning milling depth on the fabricated surface. Moreover, we demonstrate a controllable surface wettability in hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces (contact angles (CA) range from 108.3° to 150.8°) with different CA hysteresis values ranging from 31.4° to 8.3°
