    Generalizing Trimming Bounds for Endogenously Missing Outcome Data Using Random Forests

    In many experimental or quasi-experimental studies, outcomes of interest are only observed for subjects who select (or are selected) to engage in the activity generating the outcome. Outcome data is thus endogenously missing for units who do not engage, in which case random or conditionally random treatment assignment prior to such choices is insufficient to point identify treatment effects. Non-parametric partial identification bounds are a way to address endogenous missingness without having to make disputable parametric assumptions. Basic bounding approaches often yield bounds that are very wide and therefore minimally informative. We present methods for narrowing non-parametric bounds on treatment effects by adjusting for potentially large numbers of covariates, working with generalized random forests. Our approach allows for agnosticism about the data-generating process and honest inference. We use a simulation study and two replication exercises to demonstrate the benefits of our approach

    Piezoelectric Electron-Phonon Interaction from Ab Initio Dynamical Quadrupoles: Impact on Charge Transport in Wurtzite GaN

    First-principles calculations of e−ph interactions are becoming a pillar of electronic structure theory. However, the current approach is incomplete. The piezoelectric (PE) e−ph interaction, a long-range scattering mechanism due to acoustic phonons in noncentrosymmetric polar materials, is not accurately described at present. Current calculations include short-range e−ph interactions (obtained by interpolation) and the dipolelike Frölich long-range coupling in polar materials, but lack important quadrupole effects for acoustic modes and PE materials. Here we derive and compute the long-range e−ph interaction due to dynamical quadrupoles, and apply this framework to investigate e−ph interactions and the carrier mobility in the PE material wurtzite GaN. We show that the quadrupole contribution is essential to obtain accurate e−ph matrix elements for acoustic modes and to compute PE scattering. Our work resolves the outstanding problem of correctly computing e−ph interactions for acoustic modes from first principles, and enables studies of e−ph coupling and charge transport in PE materials

    Long-range quadrupole electron-phonon interaction from first principles

    Lattice vibrations in materials induce perturbations on the electron dynamics in the form of long-range (dipole and quadrupole) and short-range (octopole and higher) potentials. The dipole Fröhlich term can be included in current first-principles electron-phonon (e-ph) calculations and is present only in polar materials. The quadrupole e-ph interaction is present in both polar and nonpolar materials, but currently it cannot be computed from first principles. Here we show an approach to compute the quadrupole e-ph interaction and include it in ab initio calculations of e-ph matrix elements. The accuracy of the approach is demonstrated by comparing with direct density functional perturbation theory calculations. We apply our method to silicon as a case of a nonpolar semiconductor and tetragonal PbTiO₃ as a case of a polar piezoelectric material. In both materials we find that the quadrupole term strongly impacts the e-ph matrix elements. Analysis of e-ph interactions for different phonon modes reveals that the quadrupole term mainly affects optical modes in silicon and acoustic modes in PbTiO₃, although the quadrupole term is needed for all modes to achieve quantitative accuracy. The effect of the quadrupole e-ph interaction on electron scattering processes and transport is shown to be important.     We investigated antimicrobial drug resistance in ocular Chlamydia trachomatis 18 months after 4 biannual communitywide distributions of antimicrobial drugs in a region of Ethiopia where ocular strains of C. trachomatis are highly endemic. We found no significant differences in susceptibilities to azithromycin and doxycycline in 6 posttreatment and 4 pretreatment samples

    A microbiota-directed food intervention for undernourished children

    BACKGROUND: More than 30 million children worldwide have moderate acute malnutrition. Current treatments have limited effectiveness, and much remains unknown about the pathogenesis of this condition. Children with moderate acute malnutrition have perturbed development of their gut microbiota. METHODS: In this study, we provided a microbiota-directed complementary food prototype (MDCF-2) or a ready-to-use supplementary food (RUSF) to 123 slum-dwelling Bangladeshi children with moderate acute malnutrition between the ages of 12 months and 18 months. The supplementation was given twice daily for 3 months, followed by 1 month of monitoring. We obtained weight-for-length, weight-for-age, and length-for-age z scores and mid-upper-arm circumference values at baseline and every 2 weeks during the intervention period and at 4 months. We compared the rate of change of these related phenotypes between baseline and 3 months and between baseline and 4 months. We also measured levels of 4977 proteins in plasma and 209 bacterial taxa in fecal samples. RESULTS: A total of 118 children (59 in each study group) completed the intervention. The rates of change in the weight-for-length and weight-for-age z scores are consistent with a benefit of MDCF-2 on growth over the course of the study, including the 1-month follow-up. Receipt of MDCF-2 was linked to the magnitude of change in levels of 70 plasma proteins and of 21 associated bacterial taxa that were positively correlated with the weight-for-length z score (P\u3c0.001 for comparisons of both protein and bacterial taxa). These proteins included mediators of bone growth and neurodevelopment. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide support for MDCF-2 as a dietary supplement for young children with moderate acute malnutrition and provide insight into mechanisms by which this targeted manipulation of microbiota components may be linked to growth.
