Control of mercury emissions using unburned carbon from combustion by-products

    Get PDF
Mercury emission from a flue gas such as that generated by a coal fired power plant is controlled by injecting into the flue gas unburned carbon purified from ash such as fly ash or wood ash. The unburned carbon adsorbs the mercury and is later removed from the flue gas by a particle separator. The unburned carbon collected from ash is significantly lower in cost compared to activated carbon presently used in such a process. The unburned carbon is concentrated in the sorbent by one or more separation processes used to remove noncarbon particles from the fly ash. These processes include gravity separation, electrostatic separation, froth flotation, magnetic separation and size classification. Mercury adsorption is further increased by oxidation of the carbon surface.https://digitalcommons.mtu.edu/patents/1066/thumbnail.jp

Antagonistic Changes in Sensitivity to Antifungal Drugs by Mutations of an Important ABC Transporter Gene in a Fungal Pathogen

Fungal pathogens can be lethal, especially among immunocompromised populations, such as patients with AIDS and recipients of tissue transplantation or chemotherapy. Prolonged usage of antifungal reagents can lead to drug resistance and treatment failure. Understanding mechanisms that underlie drug resistance by pathogenic microorganisms is thus vital for dealing with this emerging issue. In this study, we show that dramatic sequence changes in PDR5, an ABC (ATP-binding cassette) efflux transporter protein gene in an opportunistic fungal pathogen, caused the organism to become hypersensitive to azole, a widely used antifungal drug. Surprisingly, the same mutations conferred growth advantages to the organism on polyenes, which are also commonly used antimycotics. Our results indicate that Pdr5p might be important for ergosterol homeostasis. The observed remarkable sequence divergence in the PDR5 gene in yeast strain YJM789 may represent an interesting case of adaptive loss of gene function with significant clinical implications

Importance It is uncertain whether intravenous methylprednisolone improves outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large-vessel occlusion (LVO) undergoing endovascular thrombectomy. Objective To assess the efficacy and adverse events of adjunctive intravenous low-dose methylprednisolone to endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke secondary to LVO. Design, Setting, and Participants This investigator-initiated, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was implemented at 82 hospitals in China, enrolling 1680 patients with stroke and proximal intracranial LVO presenting within 24 hours of time last known to be well. Recruitment took place between February 9, 2022, and June 30, 2023, with a final follow-up on September 30, 2023.InterventionsEligible patients were randomly assigned to intravenous methylprednisolone (n = 839) at 2 mg/kg/d or placebo (n = 841) for 3 days adjunctive to endovascular thrombectomy. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary efficacy outcome was disability level at 90 days as measured by the overall distribution of the modified Rankin Scale scores (range, 0 [no symptoms] to 6 [death]). The primary safety outcomes included mortality at 90 days and the incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage within 48 hours. Results Among 1680 patients randomized (median age, 69 years; 727 female [43.3%]), 1673 (99.6%) completed the trial. The median 90-day modified Rankin Scale score was 3 (IQR, 1-5) in the methylprednisolone group vs 3 (IQR, 1-6) in the placebo group (adjusted generalized odds ratio for a lower level of disability, 1.10 [95% CI, 0.96-1.25]; P = .17). In the methylprednisolone group, there was a lower mortality rate (23.2% vs 28.5%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.84 [95% CI, 0.71-0.98]; P = .03) and a lower rate of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (8.6% vs 11.7%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.74 [95% CI, 0.55-0.99]; P = .04) compared with placebo. Conclusions and Relevance Among patients with acute ischemic stroke due to LVO undergoing endovascular thrombectomy, adjunctive methylprednisolone added to endovascular thrombectomy did not significantly improve the degree of overall disability.Trial RegistrationChiCTR.org.cn Identifier: ChiCTR210005172

One-step synthesis of n-CdO/n-SnO2 heterojunction nanofibers for high-performance 3-hydroxy-2-butanone gas sensing

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a pathogenic bacterium which can release 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (3H-2B) as a biological indicator. We report a high-performance 3H-2B gas sensing strategy for the selective detection of LM. This strategy is realized by n-CdO/n-SnO _2 hetero-nanofibers with controllable compositions, synthesized via a facile one-step electrospinning method. The tailored morphologies and microstructures of CdO/SnO _2 nanofibers were systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). With the introduction of CdO into SnO _2 nanofibers, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were performed to investigate the effects of crystal phases and elemental states on the 3H-2B sensing properties. According to the gas sensing results, the variation of Cd/Sn molar ratios has a great influence on the 3H-2B sensing properties of CdO/SnO _2 nanofibers. The maximum response (45) to 5 ppm 3H-2B is found for 5 mol% CdO/SnO _2 nanofibers at 260 °C. Meanwhile, 5 mol% CdO/SnO _2 nanofibers exhibit a short response/recovery time (9 s/5 s), outstanding stability, and discriminative selectivity to 3H-2B. The enhanced sensing performance is mainly attributed to the synergy between the resistance modulation of n-CdO/n-SnO _2 heterojunctions and the doping effect of Cd ^2+ ions
