IntroductionThe expansion of maritime trade has led to the introduction of invasive species into aquatic ecosystems through ballast water discharge. China, being a major player in global trade and manufacturing, has experienced negative impacts on its coastal ecosystems and marine biodiversity.MethodsThis study examines the cost‒benefit trade-offs of ballast water management policies for major port clusters in China and other global ports. This paper evaluates compliance costs for individual vessels and fleets under different policy scenarios and ballast water treatment system (BWTS) installation strategies.ResultsThe onboard BWTS installation strategy appears to be more cost-effective under the existing International Maritime Organization (IMO) policy. However, with stricter global discharge requirements or a substantial increase in BWTS capital and operating costs, strategies based on port location could prove more beneficial due to potential economies of scale. Notably, ships with high ballast water discharge volumes, like bulk carriers, are potentially better equipped to cope with future policy shifts. In the face of stricter regulations in China, projected annual compliance cost increases range from 456million(costdatabasedonChina)to456 million (cost data based on China) to 1.205 billion (cost data based on US).DiscussionPolicymakers are advised to adopt a comprehensive view of ballast water management policies, taking into account the trade-offs between compliance costs and environmental risks. Other essential factors, such as advancements in BWTS technology, fuel consumption, emissions, and maintenance costs, also demand careful consideration in policy development

In this paper, the rotor system with nonlinear bearing force and base excitation load was modeled based on finite element method, and its response characteristic under the excitation of base load was studied. The results show that the response of the rotor is the superposition of the basic impulse response and the unbalanced response. The pulse excitation energy can be dispersed while the rotation speed and pulse frequency are close to each other. When the phase difference of unbalanced excitation is 180°, the response amplitude of rotor bearing system was the smallest. The correctness of the rotor bearing system model was verified by experiments

Anomalously low ozone of 1997 and 2011 Arctic spring: Monitoring results and analysis

Total ozone observations from the Total Ozone Unit (TOU) aboard the Chinese second generation polar orbiting meteorological satellite, Fengyun-3/A (FY-3/A), revealed that total column ozone over the Arctic declined rapidly from the beginning of March 2011. An extensive region of low column amount formed around mid March; monthly mean total column ozone in March 2011 was about 30% lower than the average observed during 1979—2010. Daily total column density of ozone near the center of low ozone area in mid March was less than 240 Dobson units, about half the total column ozone amount observed during the same period of the prior 10 years. We analyzed total column ozone data from different satellites during 1979—2011. Results show that the Arctic depletion of ozone in spring 2011 was initiated by the cold polar vortex in the lower stratosphere. The March mean total ozone over the Arctic has shown a decreasing trend over the past 32 years, and its variation is strongly correlated with the polar vortex. A similar low ozone process of spring 1997 was compared to that of 2011, but daily variations of total ozone in March over the Northern Hemisphere in 1997 and 2011 have different patterns

Synthesis and biological evaluation of pentacyclic triterpenoid derivatives as potential novel antibacterial agents

A series of ursolic acid (UA), oleanolic acid (OA) and 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) derivatives were synthesized by introducing a range of substituted aromatic side-chains at the C-2 position after the hydroxyl group at C-3 position was oxidized. Their antibacterial activities were evaluated in vitro against a panel of four Staphylococcus strains. The results revealed that the introduction of aromatic side-chains at the C-2 position of GA led to the discovery of potent triterpenoid derivatives for inhibition of both drug sensitive and resistant S. aureus, while the other two series derivatives of UA and OA showed no significant antibacterial activity even at high concentrations. In particular, GA derivative showed good potency against all four strains of Staphylococcus (MIC = 1.25 - 5 μmol/L) with acceptable pharmacokinetics properties and low cytotoxicity in vitro. Molecular docking was also performed using S. aureus DNA gyrase structure to rationalize the observed antibacterial activity. Therefore, this series of GA derivatives have strong potential for the development of a new type of triterpenoid antibacterial agent

Two essential oils were isolated from discarded perfume lemon and leaves (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. F.) by hydro-distillation with good yield (0.044% for perfume lemon and 0.338% for leaves). Their biological activities were evaluated against five selected bacterial strains and Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus, Diptera: Culicidae). Chemical composition indicated that both essential oils were rich in essential phytochemicals including hydrocarbons, monoterpenes and sesquiterpene. These constituents revealed some variability among the oils displaying interesting chemotypes (R)-(+)-limonene (12.29–49.63%), citronellal (5.37–78.70%) and citronellol (2.98–7.18%). The biological assessments proved that the two essential oils had similar effect against bacterial (inhibition zones diameter ranging from 7.27 ± 0.06 to 10.37 ± 0.15 mm; MICs and MBCs ranging from 1.6 to 6.4 mg/mL); against Ae. albopictus larvae (LC(50) ranging from 384.81 to 395.09 ppm) and adult mosquito (LD(50) ranging from 133.059 to 218.962 μg/cm(2)); the activity of the two chemotypes ((R)-(+)-limonene and citronellal): larvae (LC(50) ranging from 267.08 to 295.28 ppm), which were all presented in dose-dependent manners. Through this work, we have showcased that recycling and reusing of agriculture by-products, such as discarded perfume lemon and leaves can produce eco-friendly alternatives in bacterial disinfectants and mosquito control product

A possible high-mobility signal in bulk MoTe2: Temperature independent weak phonon decay

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted great attention due to their non-zero bandgap for potential application in high carrier mobility devices. Recent studies demonstrate that the carrier mobility of MoTe2 would decrease by orders of magnitude when used for few-layer transistors. As phonon scattering has a significant influence on carrier mobility of layered material, here, we first reported temperature-dependent Raman spectra of bulk 2H-MoTe2 from 80 to 300 K and discovered that the phonon lifetime of both E12g and A1g vibration modes are independent with temperature. These results were explained by the weak phonon decay in MoTe2. Our results imply the existence of a carrier mobility higher than the theoretical value in intrinsic bulk 2H-MoTe2 and the feasibility to obtain MoTe2-based transistors with sufficiently high carrier mobility

Abstract Background As the protein-laden by-product, red blood cells (RBCs) from poultry blood is a potential source of protein used as food and feed ingredient. However, RBC was currently underutilized. Therefore, it is an urgent need to develop feasible and cost-effective methods for converting poultry waste into nutritional and functional products. Results To take full advantage of this poultry waste, peptide hydrolysate was produced by deep controllable bioconversion of RBC, by means of synergistic combination of neutrase and flavourzyme. In this work, the functional properties and antioxidant activity of peptide hydrolysate were also characterized. The degree of hydrolysis (DH) was optimized using response surface methodology, and optimal hydrolysis conditions were found to be: temperature 51 °C, substrate concentration 14% (w/v), initial pH 7.0, and time 7.5 h. The red blood cell hydrolysate (RBCH) obtained not only possessed plentiful small peptides ( 80%), emulsifying and foaming properties, RBCH also exhibited notable antioxidant activities, such as DPPH (2,2-diphenyl− 1-picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging activity (IC50, 4.16 mg/mL), reducing power, metal chelating ability and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. Conclusions RBCH enriched in small peptides has the potential to be a new food additive with outstanding functional and antioxidant properties, and a process was established for converting poultry waste into peptide hydrolysate using neutrase and flavourzyme

Filling slurry can inevitably cause irreversible wear to the pipeline, which represents great costs to mines. This study aims to propose an extended set pair analysis (SPA) for the wear risk evaluation of backfill pipeline. First, to fully describe the wear risk of backfill pipeline, an evaluation index system was established from the aspects of slurry characteristics, pipeline properties, and slurry flow state. Then, the experts grading method was modified with probabilistic linguistic term sets (PLTSs) to obtain subjective weights. Meanwhile, the criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC) approach was used to calculate objective weights. By introducing a preference coefficient, they were integrated to determine the comprehensive weights. After that, the classical SPA was extended with membership functions and fuzzy entropy theory, so that the wear risk of backfill pipeline can be evaluated from the perspectives of both the risk level and complexity. Finally, the proposed methodology was applied to assess the wear risk in the Jinchuan nickel mine, Dahongshan copper mine, Hedong gold mine, and Xincheng gold mine. The reliability of evaluation results was further verified through sensitivity and comparative analyses. Results indicate that the proposed methodology is feasible for the wear risk evaluation of backfill pipeline, and can provide guidance on the wear risk management
