    Fabrication and characterization of nanowire arrays on InP(100) surfaces

    This work investigates the technique of mass fabrication of nanowires on semiconductor InP (100) surfaces by low energy Ar+ ion beam bombardment. Systematic investigation shows that under some crucial experimental parameters, nanowire arrays of regular periodicity can be produced. An ambient Atomic Force Microscope was used in contact mode to examine the morphology of the irradiated InP surfaces. The chemical composition of the irradiated samples was characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The electronic structure of the fabricated nanowire arrays was jointly explored by Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy and XPS. The research shows that In enriched ripples and nanowires form under prolonged irradiation by Ar+ ions due to preferential sputtering of P from InP under grazing ion incident angle above some crucial irradiation ion dose. A model of mergence from tailed cones is proposed to account for the formation of these ripples and nanowires. The drive to the formation of periodic ripples and nanowires is believed to be stress-field induced self-organisation of strained cones. The cone-mergence model is a combination of the model of stress-field induced self-organization and the model of ripple topography by Bradley and Harper (BH). The research proposes that the mobility of atoms on the corresponding solid surfaces under ion bombardment decides whether the surface morphology is generated by the stress-field, the BH, or a combination of the two models. Monte-Carlo simulation was used to evaluate the effect of surface damage and preferential sputtering of P from InP and N from Si3N4.     Relations of stellar mass between electron temperature-based metallicity of star-forming galaxies in a wide mass range

    We select 947 star-forming galaxies from SDSS-DR7 with [O~{\sc iii}]λ\lambda4363 emission lines detected at a signal-to-noise {ratio }larger than 5σ\sigma. Their electron temperatures and direct oxygen abundances are {then }determined. {W}e compare the results from different methods. t2t_2{, the} electron temperature in {the }low ionization region{,} estimated from t3t_3{, that} in {the }high ionization region{,} {is} compared {using} three analysis relations between t2t3t_2-t_3{. These} show obvious differences, which result in some different ionic oxygen abundances. The results of t3t_3, t2t_2, {O++\rm O^{++}/H+\rm H^+} and {O+\rm O^{+}/H+\rm H^+} derived by using methods from IRAF and literature are also compared. The ionic abundances O++\rm O^{++}/H+\rm H^+ {are} higher than O+\rm O^{+}/H+\rm H^+ for most cases. The{ different} oxygen abundances derived from TeT_{\rm e} and the strong-line ratios show {a }clear discrepancy, which is more obvious following increasing stellar mass and strong-line ratio R23R_{23}. The sample{ of} galaxies from SDSS {with} detected [O~{\sc iii}]λ\lambda4363 have lower metallicites and higher {star formation rates}, {so} they may not be typical representatives of the whole{ population of} galaxies. Adopting data objects from {Andrews \& Martini}, {Liang et al.} and {Lee et al.} data, we derive new relations of stellar mass and metallicity for star-forming galaxies in a much wider stellar mass range: from 106M10^6\,M_\odot to 1011M10^{11}\,M_\odot.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, Accepted by Research in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Association Between Bone Mineral Density, Bone Turnover Markers, and Serum Cholesterol Levels in Type 2 Diabetes

    Purpose: The association between bone mineral density (BMD), bone turnover markers, and serum cholesterol in healthy population has already been proved. However, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), it has not been adequately analyzed. In this study, we investigated the correlation between BMD, bone turnover markers, and serum cholesterol levels in people with T2D.Methods: We enrolled 1,040 men and 735 women with T2D from Zhongshan Hospital between October 2009 and January 2013. Their general condition, history of diseases and medication, serum markers, and BMD data were collected. We used logistic regression analysis to identify the association between serum cholesterol levels and BMD as well as bone turnover markers.Results: In multivariate regression analysis, we observed that in men with T2D, high high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and total cholesterol levels were significantly associated with low total lumbar, femur neck, and total hip BMD, while low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level was only inversely associated with total lumbar and femur neck BMD. Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were also negatively associated with osteocalcin, procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide, and β-crosslaps. In women with T2D, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level was observed to be negatively correlated with total lumbar, femur neck, and total hip BMD, while total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were only associated with BMD at the total lumbar. Furthermore, total cholesterol was also negatively associated with osteocalcin, procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide, and β-crosslaps; high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol was only related to osteocalcin and parathyroid hormone, while low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol was only related to β-crosslaps in women.Conclusion: Our study suggests a significantly negative correlation between serum cholesterol levels and BMD in both men and women with T2D. The associations between serum cholesterol levels and bone turnover markers were also observed in T2D patients

    Integrated metabolomics and lipidomics evaluate the alterations of flavor precursors in chicken breast muscle with white striping symptom

    White striping (WS) is the most common myopathy in the broiler chicken industry. To reveal flavor changes of WS meat objectively, flavor precursors of WS breast muscle were evaluated systematically with integrated metabolomics and lipidomics. The results showed that WS could be distinguished from normal controls by E-nose, and four volatile compounds (o-xylene, benzene, 1,3-dimethyl, 2-heptanone and 6-methyl and Acetic acid and ethyl ester) were detected as decreased compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Lipidomic analysis showed that WS breast fillets featured increased neutral lipid (83.8%) and decreased phospholipid molecules (33.2%). Targeted metabolomic analysis indicated that 16 hydrophilic metabolites were altered. Thereinto, some water-soluble flavor precursors, such as adenosine monophosphate, GDP-fucose and L-arginine increased significantly, but fructose 1,6-bisphosphate and L-histidine significantly decreased in the WS group. These results provided a systematic evaluation of the flavor precursors profile in the WS meat of broiler chickens

    Time Course Transcriptomic Study Reveals the Gene Regulation During Liver Development and the Correlation With Abdominal Fat Weight in Chicken

    Background: The liver is the central metabolic organ of animals. In chicken, knowledge on the relationship between gene expression in the liver and fat deposition during development is still limited. A time-course transcriptomic study from the embryonic (day 12) to the egg-producing period (day 180 after hatch) was performed to profile slow-growing meat type chicken liver gene expression and to investigate its correlation with abdominal fat deposition.Results: The transcriptome profiles showed a separation of the different developmental stages. In total, 13,096 genes were ubiquitously expressed at all the tested developmental stages. The analysis of differentially expressed genes between adjacent developmental stages showed that biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids pathway was enriched from day 21 to day 140 after hatch. The correlation between liver gene expression and the trait abdominal fat weight (AFW) was analyzed by weighted gene co-expression network analysis. The genes MFGE8, HHLA1, CKAP2, and ACSBG2 were identified as hub genes in AFW positively correlated modules, which suggested important roles of these genes in the lipid metabolism in chicken liver.Conclusion: Our results provided a resource of developmental transcriptome profiles in chicken liver and suggested that the gene ACSBG2 among other detected genes can be used as a candidate gene for selecting low AFW chickens

    Mineralization of organic matter in microbialites and implications for microbialite reservoirs in Member IV of the Leikoupo Formation, Sichuan Basin, China

    Microbialites are important reservoirs for oil and gas. The mineralization of organic matter in microbialites during early diagenesis can produce acidic fluids that dissolve carbonate grains, and can also result in an alkaline pore water that precipitates cement. The mineralization of organic matter in microbialites and its effect on microbialite reservoirs have not yet been studied in detail. In this study, quantitative statistical analysis of the two-dimensional spatial occurrence of pores and microbial fabrics, in situ geochemical analysis of specific components (microbial, transitional zone, and fine spar fabrics), and qualitative evaluation of the implications for microbialite reservoirs were undertaken on microbialites from Member IV of the Leikoupo Formation, Sichuan Basin, China. The quantitative statistical analysis shows that pores are spatially associated with microbial fabrics, but porosity has a poor correlation with microbial fabric content. In situ geochemical data indicate that microbialites with different porosities experienced different processes of organic matter mineralization. The processes of organic matter mineralization such as oxidation and nitrate reduction can provide more dissolution micropores than the process related with sulfate reduction, whereas the process of organic matter mineralization related with Fe–Mn oxide reduction results in cementation. Micropores created by organic matter mineralization can act as fluid channels for later dissolution and are important in the development of microbialite reservoirs

    Messenger RNA Sequencing and Pathway Analysis Provide Novel Insights Into the Susceptibility to Salmonella enteritidis Infection in Chickens

    Salmonella enteritidis (SE) is a foodborne pathogen that negatively affects both animal and human health. Controlling poultry SE infection will have great practical significance for human public health, as poultry are considered to be important sources and carriers of the disease. In this study, the splenic transcriptomes of challenged-susceptible (S), challenged-resistant (R) and non-challenged (C) chicks (3-days old, specific-pathogen-free White Leghorn) were characterized in order to identify the immune-related gene markers and pathways. A total of 934 significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in comparisons among the C, R and S birds. First reported here, the DEGs involved in the Forkhead box O (FoxO) signaling pathway, especially FoxO3, were identified as potential markers for host resistance to SE infection. The challenged-susceptible birds exhibited strong activation of the FoxO signaling pathway, which may be a major defect causing immune cell apoptosis as part of SE-induced pathology; these S birds also showed weak activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-related genes, contrasting with strong splenic activation in the R birds. Interestingly, suppression of several pathways in the immune response against Salmonella, including cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction and Jak-STAT, was only found in S birds and there was evidence of cross-talk among these pathways, perhaps contributing to susceptibility to Salmonella infection. These findings will help facilitate understanding resistance and susceptibility to SE infection in the earliest phases of the host immune response through Salmonella-induced pathways, provide new approaches to develop strategies for SE prevention and treatment, and may enhance innate resistance by genetic selection in animals

    Solar Intranetwork Magnetic Elements: bipolar flux appearance

    The current study aims to quantify characteristic features of bipolar flux appearance of solar intranetwork (IN) magnetic elements. To attack such a problem, we use the Narrow-band Filter Imager (NFI) magnetograms from the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on board \emph{Hinode}; these data are from quiet and an enhanced network areas. Cluster emergence of mixed polarities and IN ephemeral regions (ERs) are the most conspicuous forms of bipolar flux appearance within the network. Each of the clusters is characterized by a few well-developed ERs that are partially or fully co-aligned in magnetic axis orientation. On average, the sampled IN ERs have total maximum unsigned flux of several 10^{17} Mx, separation of 3-4 arcsec, and a lifetime of 10-15 minutes. The smallest IN ERs have a maximum unsigned flux of several 10^{16} Mx, separations less than 1 arcsec, and lifetimes as short as 5 minutes. Most IN ERs exhibit a rotation of their magnetic axis of more than 10 degrees during flux emergence. Peculiar flux appearance, e.g., bipole shrinkage followed by growth or the reverse, is not unusual. A few examples show repeated shrinkage-growth or growth-shrinkage, like magnetic floats in the dynamic photosphere. The observed bipolar behavior seems to carry rich information on magneto-convection in the sub-photospheric layer.Comment: 26 pages, 14 figure

    Expression-Based In Silico Screening of Candidate Therapeutic Compounds for Lung Adenocarcinoma

    BACKGROUND:Lung adenocarcinom (AC) is the most common form of lung cancer. Currently, the number of medical options to deal with lung cancer is very limited. In this study, we aimed to investigate potential therapeutic compounds for lung adenocarcinoma based on integrative analysis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:The candidate therapeutic compounds were identified in a two-step process. First, a meta-analysis of two published microarray data was conducted to obtain a list of 343 differentially expressed genes specific to lung AC. In the next step, expression profiles of these genes were used to query the Connectivity-Map (C-MAP) database to identify a list of compounds whose treatment reverse expression direction in various cancer cells. Several compounds in the categories of HSP90 inhibitor, HDAC inhibitor, PPAR agonist, PI3K inhibitor, passed our screening to be the leading candidates. On top of the list, three HSP90 inhibitors, i.e. 17-AAG (also known as tanespimycin), monorden, and alvespimycin, showed significant negative enrichment scores. Cytotoxicity as well as effects on cell cycle regulation and apoptosis were evaluated experimentally in lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549 or GLC-82) with or without treatment with 17-AAG. In vitro study demonstrated that 17-AAG alone or in combination with cisplatin (DDP) can significantly inhibit lung adenocarcinoma cell growth by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:We have used an in silico screening to identify compounds for treating lung cancer. One such compound 17-AAG demonstrated its anti-lung AC activity by inhibiting cell growth and promoting apoptosis and cell cycle arrest

    Differentially expressed genes in a flock of Chinese local-breed chickens infected with a subgroup J avian leukosis virus using suppression subtractive hybridization

    Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) is a new type of virus that mainly induces myeloid leukosis (ML) in chickens. To further elucidate the pathogenesis of ALV-J infection and tumor development, expression profiles from the bone marrow tissue of 15 infected and 18 non-infected birds from a local-breed poultry-farm under naturally infected conditions, were analyzed by suppression-subtractive hybridization. The birds were diagnosed as ML+ (or ML-) by specific ALV-J detection methods, involving serological tests for antigens and antibodies, and RT-PCR to detect viral RNA. A total of 59 partial gene sequences were revealed by differential screening of 496 forward and 384 reverse subtracted cDNA clones. Of these, 22 identified genes, including 8 up-regulated and 14 down-regulated, were related to immune functions, these genes being, MHC B-G antigen, translationally-controlled tumor protein (TPT1/TPTC), transferrin and ferritin, hemoglobin and Carbonic anhydrase. Four of the down-regulated genes were selected for further analysis, in view of their predicted roles in infection and immunity by real-time qRT-PCR, using RNA collected from the same birds as those used for SSH. The four genes were expressed at significantly lower levels (p < 0.001) in ALV-J infected birds than in non-infected ones
