Improved fire retardancy of thermoset composites modified with carbon nanofibers

    Get PDF
Multifunctional thermoset composites were made from polyester resin, glass fiber mats and carbon nanofiber sheets (CNS). Their flaming behavior was investigated with cone calorimeter under well-controlled combustion conditions. The heat release rate was lowered by pre-planting carbon nanofiber sheets on the sample surface with the total fiber content of only 0.38 wt.%. Electron microscopy showed that carbon nanofiber sheet was partly burned and charred materials were formed on the combusting surface. Both the nanofibers and charred materials acted as an excellent insulator and/or mass transport barrier, improving the fire retardancy of the composite. This behavior agrees well with the general mechanism of fire retardancy in various nanoparticle-thermoplastic composites

A unique concept of making nanocomposites from carbon nanofiber paper was explored in this study. The essential element of this method was to design and manufacture carbon nanofiber paper with well-controlled and optimized network structure of carbon nanofibers. In this study, carbon nanofiber paper was prepared under various processing conditions, including different types of carbon nanofibers, solvents, dispersants, and acid treatment. The morphologies of carbon nanofibers within the nanofiber paper were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the bulk densities of carbon nanofiber papers were measured. It was found that the densities and network structures of carbon nanofiber paper correlated to the dispersion quality of carbon nanofibers within the paper, which was significantly affected by papermaking process conditions. Oxygen consumption and usage during physical exercise: the balance between oxidative stress and ROS-dependent adaptive signaling.

The complexity of human DNA has been affected by aerobic metabolism, including endurance exercise and oxygen toxicity. Aerobic endurance exercise could play an important role in the evolution of Homo sapiens, and oxygen was not important just for survival, but it was crucial to redox-mediated adaptation. The metabolic challenge during physical exercise results in an elevated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are important modulators of muscle contraction, antioxidant protection, and oxidative damage repair, which at moderate levels generate physiological responses. Several factors of mitochondrial biogenesis, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), mitogen-activated protein kinase, and SIRT1, are modulated by exercise-associated changes in the redox milieu. PGC-1α activation could result in decreased oxidative challenge, either by upregulation of antioxidant enzymes and/or by an increased number of mitochondria that allows lower levels of respiratory activity for the same degree of ATP generation. Endogenous thiol antioxidants glutathione and thioredoxin are modulated with high oxygen consumption and ROS generation during physical exercise, controlling cellular function through redox-sensitive signaling and protein-protein interactions. Endurance exercise-related angiogenesis, up to a significant degree, is regulated by ROS-mediated activation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α. Moreover, the exercise-associated ROS production could be important to DNA methylation and post-translation modifications of histone residues, which create heritable adaptive conditions based on epigenetic features of chromosomes. Accumulating data indicate that exercise with moderate intensity has systemic and complex health-promoting effects, which undoubtedly involve regulation of redox homeostasis and signaling

Pt nanoparticles decorated rose-like Bi2O2CO3 configurations for efficient photocatalytic removal of water organic pollutants

    Get PDF
Pt nanoparticles decorated with rose-like Bi2O2CO3 configurations were synthesized via a simple photoreduction method at room temperature. The structure, morphology, optical and electronic properties, and photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared materials were characterized. Compared to pure Bi2O2CO3, the Pt/Bi2O2CO3 photocatalysts show better performance in decomposing RhB, BPA and OTC under visible light (? > 420 nm). The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Pt/Bi2O2CO3 could be attributed to the modification in light absorption (? > 420 nm) charge migration and the separation of photo-generated electrons (e?) and holes (h+). Free radical trapping experiments demonstrated that the main active species of the catalytic reaction are different in decomposing RhB and BPA.publishersversionPeer reviewe

In situ synthesis of interlinked three-dimensional graphene foam/polyaniline nanorod supercapacitor

    Get PDF
Three-dimensional (3-D) graphene foam/PANI nanorods were fabricated by hydrothermal treatment of graphene oxide (GO) solution and sequentially in-situ synthesis of PANI nanorods on the surface of graphene hydrogel. 3-D graphene foam was used as substrate for the growth of PANI nanorods and it increases the specific surface area as well as the double layer capacitance performance of the graphene foam/PANI nanorod composite. The length of the PANI nanorod is about 340 nm. PANI nanorods exhibited a short stick shape. These PANI nanorods agglomerate together and the growth orientation is anisotropic. The highest specific capacitance of 3-D graphene/PANI nanorod composite electrodes is 352 F g−1 at the scan rate of 10 mV s−1.Institute of Textiles and Clothin

Electromagnetic wave absorbing properties of aligned amorphous carbon nanotube/BaFe12O19 nanorod composite

    Get PDF
Aligned amorphous carbon nanotube (AACNT)/BaFe12O19 nanorod (BNR) composite was prepared by chemical vapor deposition and ball-milling methods. Raman and XRD tests were performed to investigate the microstructures, and the microwave absorbing properties of the as prepared composite were characterized using a vector network analyzer. The experimental results indicated that the mean length of as-prepared ACNT arrays was about 24 μm and the average length of BNRs were about 50 nm. The maximum absorbing peak of AACNTs/BNR composite is −21.5 dB at the frequency of 9.3 GHz. The frequency bandwidth of the reflectivity loss below −10 dB is about 2.5 GHz. AACNTs have both features of amorphous CNTs which have multiple-reflective path inside the tube-wall and crystalline CNTs which have high conductivity.Institute of Textiles and Clothin
