    A longitudinal study on new onset anxiety among children and adolescents during the COVID-19 epidemic

    Objective·To investigate the occurrence of new onset anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 epidemic, and analyze the influencing factors.Methods·Based on Chengdu Positive Child Development (CPCD) cohort, a total of 5 566 children and adolescents from five primary and secondary schools in Chengdu were enrolled. Two longitudinal study cohorts of new anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents were established, and two rounds of survey were conducted. The first round of survey (baseline survey) was conducted from December 2019 to January 2020, and the general demographic characteristics of the cohort members were collected through the Student Questionnaire for the Study on Promoting Positive Growth of Children and Adolescents. The second round of survey (follow-up survey) was conducted from February to July 2020 to collect additional information on the cohorts' infection history of COVID-19, and whether their eating, learning, and social and recreational activities were affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) was used to evaluate the new onset anxiety symptoms of all subjects. The multivariate Logistic regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of new onset anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents.Results·The results of SCARED assessment showed that the incidence of new onset anxiety symptoms among children and adolescents in Chengdu during the COVID-19 epidemic was 13.47%. In the longitudinal study cohort of new onset anxiety in children,the incidence was 11.91%, and in the longitudinal study cohort of new onset anxiety in adolescents, the incidence was 14.25%. The results of chi square test showed that there were statistically significant differences in the incidence of new onset anxiety symptoms among children in terms of age, whether they or their family members were infected with COVID-19, and whether their eating, learning and social activities were affected (all P<0.05); there were also statistically significant differences in the incidence of new onset anxiety symptoms among adolescents in gender, grade, age, residential area, and whether their eating, learning, and social and recreational activities were affected (all P<0.05). The results of multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that, for children, 6‒8 years old was the protective factor for their new onset anxiety symptoms, while they or their family members infected with COVID-19 and the impact of their learning activities were the risk factors (all P<0.05); for adolescents, males, residing in urban areas, and grades ≤ 6 were the protective factors for their new onset anxiety symptoms, while the impact of their learning activities was the risk factor (all P<0.05).Conclusion·For children and adolescents, the factors that affect their new onset anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 epidemic are not completely the same. For children, age, whether they or their family members are infected with COVID-19, and whether their learning is affected are independent influencing factors; but for adolescents, gender, grade, residential area, and whether their learning is affected are independent influencing factors. Therefore, in the process of dynamically paying attention to the mental health status of children and adolescents and continuously doing a good job of mental health intervention, it is necessary to follow the law of growth, fully consider the developmental characteristics of children and adolescents, and adopt different strategies and measures

    The longitudinal association between internet addiction and depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents before and during the COVID-19 pandemic

    BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic and related prevention policies, such as home quarantine or online courses, could increase the risks of experiencing internet addiction and mental health problems among Chinese adolescents. There is a lack of longitudinal evidence to show the association between internet addiction symptoms and psychological consequences (e.g., depressive and anxiety symptoms).ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the association between internet addiction and depressive and anxiety symptoms before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.MethodsAn effective sample of 7,958 Chinese adolescents was recruited for this two-wave longitudinal survey conducted over a six-month interval. All participants completed two-wave surveys before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A longitudinal cross-lagged path model was used to analyze the associations between internet addiction and depressive and anxiety symptoms after controlling for four covariates (i.e., age, sex, minority, and COVID-19 influence).ResultsHigher depressive and anxiety symptoms before COVID-19 significantly predicted severe internet addiction during COVID-19. Results showed a significant bidirectional relationship between internet addiction and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, the prevalence of internet addiction displayed an increasing trend over the two waves. Conversely, a reduced prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms was observed over the two waves.ConclusionThis current study provided valuable evidence that psychological problems and internet addiction significantly influenced each other before and during the COVID-19 outbreak. Consequently, the presence of psychological problems before and during the COVID-19 outbreak could indicate internet addiction. Thus, depression- and anxiety-related psychotherapies should be developed to prevent internet addiction among Chinese adolescents

    Comprehensive Mapping of Common Immunodominant Epitopes in the West Nile Virus Nonstructural Protein 1 Recognized by Avian Antibody Responses

    West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that primarily infects birds but occasionally infects humans and horses. Certain species of birds, including crows, house sparrows, geese, blue jays and ravens, are considered highly susceptible hosts to WNV. The nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) of WNV can elicit protective immune responses, including NS1-reactive antibodies, during infection of animals. The antigenicity of NS1 suggests that NS1-reactive antibodies could provide a basis for serological diagnostic reagents. To further define serological reagents for diagnostic use, the antigenic sites in NS1 that are targeted by host immune responses need to be identified and the potential diagnostic value of individual antigenic sites also needs to be defined. The present study describes comprehensive mapping of common immunodominant linear B-cell epitopes in the WNV NS1 using avian WNV NS1 antisera. We screened antisera from chickens, ducks and geese immunized with purified NS1 for reactivity against 35 partially overlapping peptides covering the entire WNV NS1. This study identified twelve, nine and six peptide epitopes recognized by chicken, duck and goose antibody responses, respectively. Three epitopes (NS1-3, 14 and 24) were recognized by antibodies elicited by immunization in all three avian species tested. We also found that NS1-3 and 24 were WNV-specific epitopes, whereas the NS1-14 epitope was conserved among the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) serocomplex viruses based on the reactivity of avian WNV NS1 antisera against polypeptides derived from the NS1 sequences of viruses of the JEV serocomplex. Further analysis showed that the three common polypeptide epitopes were not recognized by antibodies in Avian Influenza Virus (AIV), Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), Duck Plague Virus (DPV) and Goose Parvovirus (GPV) antisera. The knowledge and reagents generated in this study have potential applications in differential diagnostic approaches and subunit vaccines development for WNV and other viruses of the JEV serocomplex

    Research and design of LED indoor positioning system

    According to indoor positioning requirements, the light intensity sensing circuit is designed with LED as the light source. The function relationship between light intensity and distance is obtained by fitting the experimental data. The distance from the light source to the node to be located is calculated. The coordinate position of the node to be measured on the two-dimensional plane is obtained through the trilateral measurement and positioning algorithm. The experimental results of this system show that the absolute position error is less than 10cm, which can meet the needs of a large number of indoor positioning applications

    Interleukin-27 as a Diagnostic Biomarker for Patients with Sepsis: A Meta-Analysis

    Background. The present study was aimed to investigate the value of blood interleukin-27 (IL-27) as a diagnostic biomarker of sepsis. Methods. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and the reference lists of relevant articles. All studies published up to October 21, 2020, which evaluated the accuracy of IL-27 levels for the diagnosis of sepsis were included. All the selected papers were assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2). We used a bivariate random effects model to estimate sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratios (DOR), and a summary receiver operating characteristic curve (SROC). Deeks’ funnel plot was used to illustrate the potential presence of publication bias. Results. This meta-analysis included seven articles. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, and DOR were 0.85 (95% CI, 0.72-0.93), 0.72 (95% CI, 0.42-0.90), and 15 (95% CI, 3-72), respectively. The area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.84-0.90). The pooled I2 statistic was 96.05 for the sensitivity and 96.65 for the specificity in the heterogeneity analysis. Deeks’ funnel plot indicated no publication bias in this meta-analysis (P=0.07). Conclusions. The present results showed that IL-27 is a reliable diagnostic biomarker of sepsis, but it should be investigated in combination with other clinical tests and results

    Development of an Autophagy-Related Gene Prognostic Model and Nomogram for Estimating Renal Clear Cell Carcinoma Survival

    Background. Kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) is a fatal malignancy of the urinary system. Autophagy is implicated in KIRC occurrence and development. Here, we evaluated the prognostic value of autophagy-related genes (ARGs) in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods. We analyzed RNA sequencing and clinical KIRC patient data obtained from TCGA and ICGC to develop an ARG prognostic signature. Differentially expressed ARGs were further evaluated by functional assessment and bioinformatic analysis. Next, ARG score was determined in 215 KIRC patients using univariable Cox and LASSO regression analyses. An ARG nomogram was built based on multivariable Cox analysis. The prognosis nomogram model based on the ARG signatures and clinicopathological information was evaluated for discrimination, calibration, and clinical usefulness. Results. A total of 47 differentially expressed ARGs were identified. Of these, 8 candidates that significantly correlated with KIRC overall survival were subjected to LASSO analysis and an ARG score built. Functional enrichment and bioinformatic analysis were used to reveal the differentially expressed ARGs in cancer-related biological processes and pathways. Multivariate Cox analysis was used to integrate the ARG nomogram with the ARG signature and clinicopathological information. The nomogram exhibited proper calibration and discrimination (C-index = 0.75, AUC = >0.7). Decision curve analysis also showed that the nomogram was clinically useful. Conclusions. KIRC patients and doctors could benefit from ARG nomogram use in clinical practice

    The Accuracy of 16S rRNA Polymerase Chain Reaction for the Diagnosis of Neonatal Sepsis: A Meta-Analysis

    Objective. To determine the accuracy of 16S rRNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods. Studies involving 16S rRNA PCR tests for the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis were searched in the PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. The methodological quality of the identified studies was evaluated using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2), and the sensitivity, the specificity, the positive likelihood ratio (PLR), the negative likelihood ratio (NLR), the diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and the area under the curve (AUC) of operator characteristic (SROC) curves were determined. Heterogeneity between studies was analyzed by metaregression. Stata 14.0 and Meta-disc 1.4 software were used for the analyses. Results. This meta-analysis included 19 related studies. The analysis found a sensitivity of 0.98 (95% CI: 0.85-1), specificity of 0.94 (95% CI: 0.87-0.97), PLR of 16.0 (95% CI: 7.6-33.9), NLR of 0.02 (95% CI: 0.00-0.18), DOR of 674 (95% CI: 89-5100), and AUC of 0.99 (95% CI: 0.97-0.99). Metaregression analysis identified Asian countries, arterial blood in blood samples, and sample size>200 as the main sources of heterogeneity. This meta-analysis did not uncover publication bias. Sensitivity analysis showed that the study was robust. Fagan’s nomogram results showed clinical usability. Conclusions. The results from this meta-analysis indicate that 16S rRNA PCR testing is effective for the rapid diagnosis of neonatal sepsis
