    Interplay between static and dynamic polar correlations in relaxor Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_{3}

    We have characterized the dynamics of the polar nanoregions in Pb(Mg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_{3} (PMN) through high-resolution neutron backscattering and spin-echo measurements of the diffuse scattering cross section. We find that the diffuse scattering intensity consists of \emph{both} static and dynamic components. The static component first appears at the Curie temperature Θ∼400\Theta \sim 400 K, while the dynamic component freezes completely at the temperature Tf∼200_{f} \sim 200 K; together, these components account for all of the observed spectral weight contributing to the diffuse scattering cross section. The integrated intensity of the dynamic component peaks near the temperature at which the frequency-dependent dielectric constant reaches a maximum (Tmax_{max}) when measured at 1 GHz, i. e. on a timescale of ∼1\sim 1 ns. Our neutron scattering results can thus be directly related to dielectric and infra-red measurements of the polar nanoregions. Finally, the global temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering can be understood in terms of just two temperature scales, which is consistent with random field models.Comment: (8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.     Neutron and X-ray diffraction study of cubic [111] field cooled Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

    Neutron and x-ray diffraction techniques have been used to study the competing long and short-range polar order in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_{3} (PMN) under a [111] applied electric field. Despite reports of a structural transition from a cubic phase to a rhombohedral phase for fields E >> 1.7 kV/cm, we find that the bulk unit cell remains cubic (within a sensitivity of 90∘^{\circ}-α\alpha =0.03∘^{\circ})for fields up to 8 kV/cm. Furthermore, we observe a structural transition confined to the near surface volume or `skin' of the crystal where the cubic cell is transformed to a rhombohedral unit cell at Tc_{c}=210 K for E >> 4 kV/cm, for which 90∘^{\circ}-α\alpha=0.08 ±\pm 0.03∘^{\circ} below 50 K. While the bulk unit cell remains cubic, a suppression of the diffuse scattering and concomitant enhancement of the Bragg peak intensity is observed below Tc_{c}=210 K, indicating a more ordered structure with increasing electric field yet an absence of a long-range ferroelectric ground state in the bulk. The electric field strength has little effect on the diffuse scattering above Tc_{c}, however below Tc_{c} the diffuse scattering is reduced in intensity and adopts an asymmetric lineshape in reciprocal space. The absence of hysteresis in our neutron measurements (on the bulk) and the presence of two distinct temperature scales suggests that the ground state of PMN is not a frozen glassy phase as suggested by some theories but is better understood in terms of random fields introduced through the presence of structural disorder. Based on these results, we also suggest that PMN represents an extreme example of the two-length scale problem, and that the presence of a distinct skin maybe necessary for a relaxor ground state.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

    Uncovering neuroinflammation-related modules and potential repurposing drugs for Alzheimer's disease through multi-omics data integrative analysis

    BackgroundNeuroinflammation is one of the key factors leading to neuron death and synapse dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Amyloid-β (Aβ) is thought to have an association with microglia activation and trigger neuroinflammation in AD. However, inflammation response in brain disorders is heterogenous, and thus, it is necessary to unveil the specific gene module of neuroinflammation caused by Aβ in AD, which might provide novel biomarkers for AD diagnosis and help understand the mechanism of the disease.MethodsTranscriptomic datasets of brain region tissues from AD patients and the corresponding normal tissues were first used to identify gene modules through the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) method. Then, key modules highly associated with Aβ accumulation and neuroinflammatory response were pinpointed by combining module expression score and functional information. Meanwhile, the relationship of the Aβ-associated module to the neuron and microglia was explored based on snRNA-seq data. Afterward, transcription factor (TF) enrichment and the SCENIC analysis were performed on the Aβ-associated module to discover the related upstream regulators, and then a PPI network proximity method was employed to repurpose the potential approved drugs for AD.ResultsA total of 16 co-expression modules were primarily obtained by the WGCNA method. Among them, the green module was significantly correlated with Aβ accumulation, and its function was mainly involved in neuroinflammation response and neuron death. Thus, the module was termed the amyloid-β induced neuroinflammation module (AIM). Moreover, the module was negatively correlated with neuron percentage and showed a close association with inflammatory microglia. Finally, based on the module, several important TFs were recognized as potential diagnostic biomarkers for AD, and then 20 possible drugs including ibrutinib and ponatinib were picked out for the disease.ConclusionIn this study, a specific gene module, termed AIM, was identified as a key sub-network of Aβ accumulation and neuroinflammation in AD. Moreover, the module was verified as having an association with neuron degeneration and inflammatory microglia transformation. Moreover, some promising TFs and potential repurposing drugs were presented for AD based on the module. The findings of the study shed new light on the mechanistic investigation of AD and might make benefits the treatment of the disease

    Substitution of Ni for Fe in superconducting Fe0.98_{0.98}Te0.5_{0.5}Se0.5_{0.5} depresses the normal-state conductivity but not the magnetic spectral weight

    We have performed systematic resistivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Fe0.98−z_{0.98-z}Niz_zTe0.5_{0.5}Se0.5_{0.5} samples to study the impact of Ni substitution on the transport properties and the low-energy (≤\le 12 meV) magnetic excitations. It is found that, with increasing Ni doping, both the conductivity and superconductivity are gradually suppressed; in contrast, the low-energy magnetic spectral weight changes little. Comparing with the impact of Co and Cu substitution, we find that the effects on conductivity and superconductivity for the same degree of substitution grow systematically as the atomic number of the substituent deviates from that of Fe. The impact of the substituents as scattering centers appears to be greater than any contribution to carrier concentration. The fact that low-energy magnetic spectral weight is not reduced by increased electron scattering indicates that the existence of antiferromagnetic correlations does not depend on electronic states close to the Fermi energy.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Outcomes of single- vs two-stage primary joint arthroplasty for septic arthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Purpose: Septic arthritis (SA) is an intra-articular infection caused by purulent bacteria and the only effective method is surgical intervention. Two-stage arthroplasty is considered the gold standard treatment for SA, but recent studies have found that single-stage arthroplasty can achieve the same efficacy as two-stage arthroplasty. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of single- vs two-stage arthroplasty in the treatment of (acute or quiescent) SA. Methods: The review process was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, and Cochrane Library databases to identify all literature on the treatment of SA using single- and two-stage arthroplasty from the date of database inception to November 10, 2022. Data on reinfection rates were expressed as odds ratios and 95% CIs. Results: Seven retrospective studies with a total of 413 patients were included. Pooled analysis showed no difference in the reinfection rate between single- and two-stage arthroplasty. Subgroup analysis found no difference between the single- and two-stage arthroplasty groups in the incidence of purulent infection of the hip and knee. Cumulative meta-analysis showed gradual stabilization of outcomes. Conclusions: Based on our meta-analysis of available retrospective studies, we found no significant difference in reinfection rates between single- and two-stage arthroplasty for SA. Further prospective cohort studies are needed to confirm our results, although our meta-analysis provides important insights into the current literature on this topic

    Estimation of nitrogen use efficiency for ryegrass-fed dairy cows: model development using diet and animal-based proxy measures

    This study aimed to identify suitable predictors of nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE; milk N/N intake) for cows that differed in breeds and were fed with ryegrass pasture, using existing data from the scientific literature. Data from 16 studies were used to develop models based on the relationships between NUE and dietary and animal-based factors. Data from a further 10 studies were used for model validation. Milk urea N (MUN) and dietary water-soluble carbohydrate-to-crudeprotein ratio (WSC/CP) were the best and most practical animal- and diet-based proxies to predict NUE. The results indicate that it might be necessary to adopt separate models for different breeds when using WSC/CP to predict NUE but not when using MUN

    Supplementing Vitamin E to the Ration of Beef Cattle Increased the Utilization Efficiency of Dietary Nitrogen

    The objectives of the trial were to investigate the effects of supplementing vitamin E (VE) on nutrient digestion, nitrogen (N) retention and plasma parameters of beef cattle in feedlot. Four growing Simmental bulls, fed with a total mixed ration composed of corn silage and concentrate mixture as basal ration, were used as the experimental animals. Four levels of VE product, i.e. 0, 150, 300, 600 mg/head/d (equivalent to 0, 75, 150, 300 IU VE/head/d), were supplemented to the basal ration (VE content 38 IU/kg dry matter) in a 4×4 Latin square design as experimental treatments I, II, III and IV, respectively. Each experimental period lasted 15 days, of which the first 12 days were for pretreatment and the last 3 days for sampling. The results showed that supplementing VE did not affect the nutrient digestibility (p>0.05) whereas decreased the urinary N excretion (p0.05). It was concluded that supplementing VE up to 300 IU/head/d did not affect the nutrient digestibility whereas supplementing VE at 150 or 300 IU/head/d increased the N retention and the plasma concentrations of VE and TG (p<0.05) of beef cattle
