Preparation of cluster states and W states with superconducting- quantum-interference-device qubits in cavity QED
We propose schemes to create cluster states and W states by many
superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) qubits in cavities under
the influence of the cavity decay. Our schemes do not require auxiliary qubits,
and the excited levels are only virtually coupled throughout the scheme, which
could much reduce the experimental challenge. We consider the cavity decay in
our model and analytically demonstrate its detrimental influence on the
prepared entangled states.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Solar surface rotation: N-S asymmetry and recent speed-up
Context. The relation between solar surface rotation and sunspot activity
still remains open. Sunspot activity has dramatically reduced in solar cycle 24
and several solar activity indices and flux measurements experienced
unprecedentedly low levels during the last solar minimum.
Aims. We aim to reveal the momentary variation of solar surface rotation,
especially during the recent years of reducing solar activity. Methods. We used
a dynamic, differentially rotating reference system to determine the best-fit
annual values of the differential rotation parameters of active longitudes of
solar X-ray flares and sunspots in 1977-2012.
Results. The evolution of rotation of solar active longitudes obtained with
X-ray flares and with sunspots is very similar. Both hemispheres speed up since
the late 1990s, with the southern hemisphere rotating slightly faster than the
north. Earlier, in 1980s, rotation in the northern hemisphere was considerably
faster, but experienced a major decrease in the early 1990s. On the other hand,
little change was found in the southern rotation during these decades. This led
to a positive asymmetry in north-south rotation rate in the early part of the
time interval studied.
Conclusions. The rotation of both hemispheres has been speeding up at roughly
the same rate since late 1990s, with the southern hemisphere rotating slightly
faster than the north. This period coincides with the start of dramatic
weakening of solar activity, as observed in sunspots and several other solar,
interplanetary and geomagnetic parameters.Comment: Astron. Astrophys. Lett. (accepted
Universal quantum computation with electronic qubits in decoherence-free subspace
We investigate how to carry out universal quantum computation
deterministically with free electrons in decoherence-free subspace by using
polarizing beam splitters, charge detectors, and single-spin rotations. Quantum
information in our case is encoded in spin degrees of freedom of the
electron-pairs which construct a decoherence-free subspace. We design building
blocks for two noncommutable single-logic-qubit gates and a logic controlled
phase gate, based on which a universal and scalable quantum information
processing robust to dephasing is available in a deterministic way.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Response of arum lily calli to culture filtrate of Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum
This report demonstrated that culture filtrate of Pectobacterium carotovorum ssp. carotovorum isolate ZT0505, the pathogen of bacterial soft rot disease of arum lily (Zantedeschia sp.), contained extracellular enzymes and caused arum lily leaf tissue and callus maceration. Arum lily leaf tissue and callus sensitivity to culture filtrate coincided with the host susceptibility to the pathogen. The rates of survival of callus pieces were determined after exposure for various times to culture filtrate. Survival of callus pieces (%) increased with reduction of exposure time from 20 to 14 h and from 14 to 8 h. One out of 30 callus pieces was still viable after 3 cycles of 8 h exposure. Subsequently, the surviving cells in this callus pieces proliferated and differentiated into shoots. Based on this initial work, the callus screening using culture filtrate as selection agent may be useful for in vitro selection of soft rot resistant germplasm in arum lily
