The Digital Archiving of Historical Political Cartoons: An Introduction
Political (editorial) cartoons often capture the Zeitgeist of society and convey a message. Increasingly, historians study them to understand commentaries of past events or personalities. Visual culture as an academic subject could be greatly enhanced if this information can be digitally archived. We employ crowdsourcing to obtain valuable metadata by guiding volunteers' feedback using an online survey with 31 targeted questions. We provide intellectual access to a set of about 300 cartoons of a single creator spanning over multiple years in a highly interactive search engine.
Impact of the abolition of EU Milk quotas on Agriculture in the UK
In recent years the CAP has undergone significant reforms, but the dairy sector has largely avoided wholesale changes. The sector, however, is now faced with a significant effort by the Commission to instigate reform. In this study the FAPRI-UK modelling system is simulated to identify the impact of abolishing or phasing out EU milk quotas on the dairy sector in the UK and the results are compared against a 2007 Baseline projection (2007--2016). Resistively Detected NMR in Quantum Hall States: Investigation of the anomalous lineshape near
A study of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR)
lineshape in the vicinity of was performed on a high-mobility 2D
electron gas formed in GaAs/AlGaAs. In higher Landau levels, application of an
RF field at the nuclear magnetic resonance frequency coincides with an observed
minimum in the longitudinal resistance, as predicted by the simple hyperfine
interaction picture. Near however, an anomalous dispersive lineshape is
observed where a resistance peak follows the usual minimum. In an effort to
understand the origin of this anomalous peak we have studied the resonance
under various RF and sample conditions. Interestingly, we show that the
lineshape can be completely inverted by simply applying a DC current. We
interpret this as evidence that the minima and maxima in the lineshape

A Stochastic Analysis of the Impact of Volatile World Agricultural Prices on European and UK Agriculture
Successive Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reforms and trade liberalisation have led to a more market-orientated European agricultural sector, with EU commodity prices now more closely linked to world prices. As a consequence EU prices have become more volatile. Greater price volatility increases uncertainty and raises fresh challenges for projections of policy impacts in the EU. To take account of world price volatility stochastic modelling has been applied to the FAPRI-EU partial equilibrium model, which includes a UK modelling system. Stochastic modelling provides a means to capture some of the inherent uncertainty associated with agricultural production systems. By varying assumptions about certain exogenous variables, stochastic models can be used to examine the different ways markets may behave. Variable world prices are incorporated within the EU GOLD model. This process identifies the impact of a stochastic distribution of world prices on EU agriculture rather than the single point estimates in the conventional deterministic approach. Study of heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si in high-purity Al-Si alloys with Sr addition
The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2010 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM InternationalAl-5 wt pct Si master-alloys with controlled Sr and/or P addition/s were produced using super purity Al 99.99 wt pct and Si 99.999 wt pct materials in an arc melter. The master-alloy was melt-spun resulting in the production of thin ribbons. The Al matrix of the ribbons contained entrained Al-Si eutectic droplets that were subsequently investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to examine the effect of the Sr and P additions on eutectic undercoolings and nucleation phenomenon. Results indicate that, unlike P, Sr does not promote nucleation. Increasing Sr additions depressed the eutectic nucleation temperature. This may be a result of the formation of a Sr phase that could consume or detrimentally affect potent AlP nucleation sites.This work is financially supported by the

A cusp electron gun for millimeter wave gyro-devices
A thermionic cusp electron gun has been designed, numerically optimized and experimentally measured and is presented. A 40 kV, 1.5 A annular axis-encircling electron beam has been simulated to generate a beam with low velocity and alpha spreads. The electron gun performance has been verified through experiments. Based on the measured results further improvement and optimization of the cusp gun for high frequency operation were carried out and the results will be presented
Shear viscosity of the Quark-Gluon Plasma from a virial expansion
We calculate the shear viscosity in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase
within a virial expansion approach with particular interest in the ratio of
to the entropy density , i.e. . The virial expansion approach
allows us to include the interactions between the partons in the deconfined
phase and to evaluate the corrections to a single-particle partition function.
In the latter approach we start with an effective interaction with parameters
fixed to reproduce thermodynamical quantities of QCD such as energy and/or
entropy density. We also directly extract the effective coupling \ga_{\rm V}
for the determination of . Our numerical results give a ratio
at the critical temperature , which is very
close to the theoretical bound of . Furthermore, for temperatures
the ratio is in the range of the present
experimental estimates at RHIC. When combining our results for
in the deconfined phase with those from chiral perturbation theory or
the resonance gas model in the confined phase we observe a pronounced minimum

Dirac-like Monopoles in Three Dimensions and Their Possible Influences on the Dynamics of Particles
Dirac-like monopoles are studied in three-dimensional Abelian Maxwell and
Maxwell-Chern-Simons models. Their scalar nature is highlighted and discussed
through a dimensional reduction of four-dimensional electrodynamics with
electric and magnetic sources. Some general properties and similarities of them
when are considered in Minkowski or Euclidian space are mentioned. However, by
virtue of the structure of the space-time in which they are considered a number
of differences among them take place. Furthermore, we pay attention to some
consequences of these objects when acting upon usual particles. Among other
subjects, special attention is given to the study of a Lorentz-violating
non-minimal coupling between neutral fermions and the field generated by a
monopole alone. In addition, an analogue of the Aharonov-Casher effect is

Thermal Hall conductivity of marginal Fermi liquids subject to out-of plane impurities in high- cuprates
The effect of out-of-plane impurities on the thermal Hall conductivity
of in-plane marginal-Fermi-liquid (MFL) quasiparticles in
high- cuprates is examined by following the work on electrical Hall
conductivity by Varma and Abraham [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4652
(2001)]. It is shown that the effective Lorentz force exerted by these
impurities is a weak function of energies of the MFL quasiparticles, resulting
in nearly the same temperature dependence of and ,
indicative of obedience of the Wiedemann-Franz law. The inconsistency of the
theoretical result with the experimental one is speculated to be the
consequence of the different amounts of out-of-plane impurities in the two
