    Oxidative Stress, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, and Aging

    Aging is an intricate phenomenon characterized by progressive decline in physiological functions and increase in mortality that is often accompanied by many pathological diseases. Although aging is almost universally conserved among all organisms, the underlying molecular mechanisms of aging remain largely elusive. Many theories of aging have been proposed, including the free-radical and mitochondrial theories of aging. Both theories speculate that cumulative damage to mitochondria and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the causes of aging. Oxidative damage affects replication and transcription of mtDNA and results in a decline in mitochondrial function which in turn leads to enhanced ROS production and further damage to mtDNA. In this paper, we will present the current understanding of the interplay between ROS and mitochondria and will discuss their potential impact on aging and age-related diseases

    The Performances Optimization of Finger Seal Based on Fuzzy Game Theory

    AbstractLeakage and abrasion are two key performances of finger seals (FS). They not only contradict each other in FS design but also relate to many design parameters. Moreover, in the multi-objective optimization progress, the problems of optimizing results decision and preference requirement for optimization objectives are still challenge to researcher. So far, they are still important influence factors for advanced FS design. Therefore, the current work presents a new multi-objective optimization method by introducing game theory and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation theory. The optimizing results are compared to that of the general optimization method and finite element method (FEM). The study show that the FS, which is obtained by presented optimization method, has good performances. Compared respectively with the general optimization method and FEM, the computational results indicate that the presented method can effectively reflect the different response requirements of optimization objectives. Furthermore, the decision-making difficulty for multi-objective optimization of FS performances is significantly reduced

    Regulation of Senescence in Cancer and Aging

    Senescence is regarded as a physiological response of cells to stress, including telomere dysfunction, aberrant oncogenic activation, DNA damage, and oxidative stress. This stress response has an antagonistically pleiotropic effect to organisms: beneficial as a tumor suppressor, but detrimental by contributing to aging. The emergence of senescence as an effective tumor suppression mechanism is highlighted by recent demonstration that senescence prevents proliferation of cells at risk of neoplastic transformation. Consequently, induction of senescence is recognized as a potential treatment of cancer. Substantial evidence also suggests that senescence plays an important role in aging, particularly in aging of stem cells. In this paper, we will discuss the molecular regulation of senescence its role in cancer and aging. The potential utility of senescence in cancer therapeutics will also be discussed

    Design, synthesis, and insecticidal activity evaluation of piperine derivatives

    Structural optimization of natural products has become one of the most effective ways to develop novel pesticides. In this study, 30 novel pesticide derivatives containing a linear bisamide were synthesized. Then, their insecticidal activities against P. xylostella were evaluated. Results indicate that different bisamide substitutes show different larvicidal structure–activity relationships. At the same time, 2-trifluoroethyl is the most efficient substituent. The bioactivity results showed that most of the desired compounds exhibited better insecticidal activity against P. xylostella than piperine. Among them, compound D28 resulted in 90% mortality at 1 mg/ml concentration. This study provides a novel protocol for the discovery of new insecticides. The molecular docking results indicated that compound D28 could act on γ-aminobutyric acid receptors

    Magnetostratigraphic dating of the Linyi Fauna and implications for sequencing the mammalian faunas on the Chinese Loess Plateau

    The Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) in North China is an important terrestrial archive that witnessed the environmental changes and mammal and early human evolution in Asia over the past 2.6 Ma. Establishing precise ages for the Pleistocene faunas on the CLP is critical for better understanding of these environmental, biological, and archaeological issues. Here we report a new magnetostratigraphic record that places age constraints on the Linyi Fauna on the southeastern CLP. Our investigated 170-m-thick Linyi section mainly consists of two portions: (1) an overlying eolian Quaternary loess-paleosol sequence and (2) underlying fluvial-lacustrine sand and silty clay. Paleomagnetic results suggest that the composite section records the Brunhes chron, Jaramillo and Olduvai subchrons, and successive reverse polarity portions of the intervening Matuyama chron. The Linyi Fauna is located between Jaramillo and Olduvai subchrons in the fluvial-lacustrine interval, with an estimated age of similar to 1.5-1.6 Ma. Combining previously dated faunas, we establish a Pleistocene magnetochronology spanning from 2.54 to 0.65 Ma for the faunas on the CLP

    Responses and sensitivities of maize phenology to climate change from 1971 to 2020 in Henan Province, China.

    Climate change affects many aspects of the physiological and biochemical processes of growing maize and ultimately its yield. A comprehensive climate suitability model is proposed that quantifies the effects of temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, and wind in different phenological stages of maize. It is calibrated using weather and yield data from China's Henan Province. The comprehensive suitability model showed the capability of correctly hindcasting observed temporal and spatial changes in maize phenology in response to climatic factors. The predicted yield based on the suitability model can well match the recorded field yield very well from 1971-2020. The results of correlation showed that the yields are more closely related to multi-weather factors, temperature and precipitation than to solar radiation and wind. The sensitivity analysis illustrates that temperature and precipitation are the dominant weather factors affecting yield changes based on a direct differentiation method. The comprehensive suitability model can provide a scientific support and analysis tool for predicting grain production considering climate changes
