Multiwavelength analysis as a probe of accretion and radiative processes in LINERs
We study the multiwavelength properties of an optically selected sample of
Low Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Regions (LINERs), in an attempt to
determine the accretion mechanism powering their central engine. We show how
their X-ray spectral characteristics, and their spectral energy distribution
compare to luminous AGN, and briefly discuss their connection to their less
massive counter-parts galactic black-hole X-ray binaries.Comment: 2 Pages. Proceedings of IAUS 290 "Feeding Compact Objects: Accretion

Direct-current control of radiation-induced differential magnetoresistance oscillations in two-dimensional electron systems
Magnetoresistance oscillations in two-dimensional electron systems driven
simultaneously by a strong direct current and a microwave irradiation, are
analyzed within a unified microscopic scheme treating both excitations on an
equal footing. The microwave-induced resistance oscillations are described by a
parameter proportional to the radiation frequency, while the
dc-induced resistance oscillations are governed by a parameter
proportional to the current density. In the presence of both a microwave
radiation and a strong dc, the combined parameter
is shown to control the main resistance oscillations, in agreement with the
recent measurement [Zhang {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 106804

A New Lower Bound for the Distinct Distance Constant
The reciprocal sum of Zhang sequence is not equal to the Distinct Distance
Constant. This note introduces a -sequence with larger reciprocal sum, and
provides a more precise estimation of the reciprocal sums of Mian-Chowla
sequence and Zhang sequence.Comment: 4 pages, 3 ancillary table
Systematic X-ray absorption study of hole doping in BSCCO - phases
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) on the O 1s threshold was applied to
Bi-based, single crystalline high temperature superconductors (HTc's), whose
hole densities in the CuO2 planes was varied by different methods. XAS gives
the intensity of the so-called pre-peak of the O 1s line due to the unoccupied
part of the Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet state. The effects of variation of the
number n of CuO2 - planes per unit cell (n = 1,2,3) and the effect of
La-substitution for Sr for the n = 1 and n = 2 phase were studied
systematically. Furthermore the symmetry of the states could be probed by the
polarization of the impinging radiation.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of SCES2001, Ann
