VALET, visual analytics law enforcement toolkit, is an interactive toolkit developed for law enforcement agencies to explore concerned crime information and make police resource allocation strategies. As a visual analytics toolkit, VALET is coupled with data collection, data analytics and data prediction. The objective of VALET is to assist law enforcement agencies to reduce crime rate by wisely allocating police resource based on the analytics of historical crime records. The program incorporates three steps to generate police patrol route and policeman allocation. The first step is to generate crime hotspots and crime contours of collected crime data. The next step is to analyze historical crime information and predict potential defects. Finally, the program is to compute police patrol routes and allocate police resource based on schedule and specialty. The results from the program allow us to generate risky area for different type of crimes, and evaluate policemen’s performance in dealing with different type of crimes. Thus, police department is able to assign police officers to designed patrol routes that suggested by prediction tool based on policemen’s specialty. This would take advantage of crime prediction and decrease the time of handling criminal activities. With VALET, law enforcement agencies are able to explore concerned crime information intelligently. At the same time, police department is prompted to allocate police resource wisely

Running Cells with Decision-Making Mechanism: Intelligence Decision P System for Evacuation Simulation

Cell migration is a central process which happens along with multicellular organisms' development and maintenance. The process that cells move to specidic locations in particular directions has some similarities with pedestrian walking behaviour. In this work, we propose a simulation model called an Intelligence Decision P System (IDPS), which is inspired by the process of cell migration. Each cell has its own decision-making mechanism and moving mechanism. They move towards its goals on a two-dimensional space under the guidance of external signals and its own regulations. Cells also communicate with each other according to specidic interaction mechanism. The environment is dedined as a place for cell movement. It includes signal objects, some of which help start or end the migration and others have great influence on the speed and directions of cells. It also keeps a record of current position for each cell. Comparing with traditional P systems, cells can be considered as intelligent particles with decision-making mechanism and they can move to their destination. A case study is about modeling and simulating a building evacuation problem in a dire emergency by using the IDPS model. To our best knowledge, the topic of evacuation simulation was not under study in the dield of membrane computing before. The simulation result shows that the IDPS allows much easier and more precise modelling of pedestrian evacuation problems. So it is supposed to be a good simulation model for pedestrian walking behaviour

Replication-Dependent Unhooking of DNA Interstrand Cross-Links by the NEIL3 Glycosylase

During eukaryotic DNA interstrand cross-link (ICL) repair, cross-links are resolved (“unhooked”) by nucleolytic incisions surrounding the lesion. In vertebrates, ICL repair is triggered when replication forks collide with the lesion, leading to FANCI-FANCD2-dependent unhooking and formation of a double-strand break (DSB) intermediate. Using Xenopus egg extracts, we describe here a replication-coupled ICL repair pathway that does not require incisions or FANCI-FANCD2. Instead, the ICL is unhooked when one of the two N-glycosyl bonds forming the cross-link is cleaved by the DNA glycosylase NEIL3. Cleavage by NEIL3 is the primary unhooking mechanism for psoralen and abasic site ICLs. When N-glycosyl bond cleavage is prevented, unhooking occurs via FANCI-FANCD2-dependent incisions. In summary, we identify an incision-independent unhooking mechanism that avoids DSB formation and represents the preferred pathway of ICL repair in a vertebrate cell-free system
