    Effects of Returning Straw and Milk Vetch on Rice Growth and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

    The effects of different nitrogen application levels on rice yield and greenhouse gas (NO2, CH4) emissions from rice fields under the combined action of straw and milk vetch. Two treatments were set up in the main area of this experiment: R0 (no straw returned to the field, 0); R1 (amount of straw returned to the field under normal conditions, 6000 kg·hm-2). Before turning the straw back into the field, use a circular knife to cut the straw into 10~13 cm.And 3 kinds of nitrogen application treatments in the sub-district: N1 (no nitrogen application, 0), N2 (nitrogen application, 15 kg·hm-2), N3 (nitrogen application, 30 kg·hm-2), two-factor cross-combination,and a non-nitrogen control CK, total of 7 treatments. The results showed that in 2017, early rice R1N2 treatment increased the most obvious yield, which was 32.44% higher than CK, and late rice R1N1 treatment increased the most significantly, which was 17.91% higher than CK. CH4 emission is positively correlated with the straw returned to the field. N2O is the opposite. The N2O emission flux was highest in the treatment of R1N3, and the CH4 emission flux was the highest in the treatment of R1N2

    Urbanization and health in China, thinking at the national, local and individual levels

    BACKGROUND: China has the biggest population in the world, and has been experiencing the largest migration in history, and its rapid urbanization has profound and lasting impacts on local and national public health. Under these conditions, a systems understanding on the correlation among urbanization, environmental change and public health and to devise solutions at national, local and individual levels are in urgent need. METHODS: In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of recent studies which have examined the relationship between urbanization, urban environmental changes and human health in China. Based on the review, coupled with a systems understanding, we summarize the challenges and opportunities for promoting the health and wellbeing of the whole nation at national, local, and individual levels. RESULTS: Urbanization and urban expansion result in urban environmental changes, as well as residents’ lifestyle change, which can lead independently and synergistically to human health problems. China has undergone an epidemiological transition, shifting from infectious to chronic diseases in a much shorter time frame than many other countries. Environmental risk factors, particularly air and water pollution, are a major contributing source of morbidity and mortality in China. Furthermore, aging population, food support system, and disparity of public service between the migrant worker and local residents are important contributions to China’s urban health. CONCLUSIONS: At the national level, the central government could improve current environmental policies, food safety laws, and make adjustments to the health care system and to demographic policy. At the local level, local government could incorporate healthy life considerations in urban planning procedures, make improvements to the local food supply, and enforce environmental monitoring and management.     Efficacy evaluation of summer acupoint application treatment on asthma patients: a two-year follow-up clinical study

    AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the self-efficacy and satisfaction of asthma patients subjected to summer acupoint application treatment (SAAT).MethodsA two-year follow-up clinical study was conducted. Patients with asthma were treated by applying a herbal paste onto the Feishu (BL 13) and Fengmen (BL 12) acupoints on the three hottest days of summer, according to the traditional Chinese calendar, from 2008 to 2010. During a two-year follow-up, these patients were asked to fill out a questionnaire evaluating asthma degree, exacerbation frequency, concomitant medications and self-satisfaction. The self-rate and doctor-report outcomes obtained in parallel were evaluated to assess the efficacy of SAAT.ResultsA total of 527 asthma patients were initially enrolled in this study, of which 97 elderly patients and those with more severe cases of asthma were lost to follow-up. Thus, a total of 430 patients were valid for analysis using self-rate data. Nevertheless, occasional negative returns were obtained; almost all of the outcomes were rated as “No change”, “Moderate effective”, or “Very effective”. In addition, 80% of the patients were satisfied with this treatment. Moreover, 391 (91.4%) patients were somewhat improved after SAAT in 2009, and further improvement was observed in 2010. After SAAT, the average asthma-degree score decreased from 5.3 in 2008 to 4 in 2009 and, subsequently to 3.5 in 2010.ConclusionWith pronounced patient satisfaction, SAAT can reduce the exacerbation severity and frequency, concomitant medications and asthma degree. Prolonging the treatment course might enhance the efficacy of SAAT

    Characterizing Urban Household Waste Generation and Metabolism Considering Community Stratification in a Rapid Urbanizing Area of China

    The relationship between social stratification and municipal solid waste generation remains uncertain under current rapid urbanization. Based on a multi-object spatial sampling technique, we selected 191 households in a rapidly urbanizing area of Xiamen, China. The selected communities were classified into three types: work-unit, transitional, and commercial communities in the context of housing policy reform in China. Field survey data were used to characterize household waste generation patterns considering community stratification. Our results revealed a disparity in waste generation profiles among different households. The three community types differed with respect to family income, living area, religious affiliation, and homeowner occupation. Income, family structure, and lifestyle caused significant differences in waste generation among work-unit, transitional, and commercial communities, respectively. Urban waste generation patterns are expected to evolve due to accelerating urbanization and associated community transition. A multi-scale integrated analysis of societal and ecosystem metabolism approach was applied to waste metabolism linking it to particular socioeconomic conditions that influence material flows and their evolution. Waste metabolism, both pace and density, was highest for family structure driven patterns, followed by lifestyle and income driven. The results will guide community-specific management policies in rapidly urbanizing areas

    Gene expression profile based classification models of psoriasis

    AbstractPsoriasis is an autoimmune disease, which symptoms can significantly impair the patient's life quality. It is mainly diagnosed through the visual inspection of the lesion skin by experienced dermatologists. Currently no cure for psoriasis is available due to limited knowledge about its pathogenesis and development mechanisms. Previous studies have profiled hundreds of differentially expressed genes related to psoriasis, however with no robust psoriasis prediction model available. This study integrated the knowledge of three feature selection algorithms that revealed 21 features belonging to 18 genes as candidate markers. The final psoriasis classification model was established using the novel Incremental Feature Selection algorithm that utilizes only 3 features from 2 unique genes, IGFL1 and C10orf99. This model has demonstrated highly stable prediction accuracy (averaged at 99.81%) over three independent validation strategies. The two marker genes, IGFL1 and C10orf99, were revealed as the upstream components of growth signal transduction pathway of psoriatic pathogenesis

    Transcriptome profiling reveals the underlying mechanism of grape post-harvest pathogen Penicillium olsonii against the metabolites of Bacillus velezensis

    IntroductionPathogen infection influences the post-harvest shelf life of grape berries. In a preliminary study, metabolites produced by Bacillus velezensis significantly inhibited the growth of the grape postharvest pathogen Penicillium olsonii.MethodsTo investigate the mechanism of interaction between B. velezensis and P. olsonii, a draft genome was generated for P. olsonii WHG5 using the Illumina NovaSeq platform, and the transcriptomic changes in WHG5 were analyzed in response to the exposure to B. velezensis metabolites (10% v/v).ResultsThe expression levels of genes associated with sporulation, including GCY1, brlA, and abaA, were down-regulated compared with those of the control. In addition, spore deformation and abnormal swelling of the conidiophore were observed. The expression of crucial enzymes, including fructose 2,6-bisphosphate and mannitol-2-dehydrogenase, was down-regulated, indicating that the glycolytic pathway of WHG5 was adversely affected by B. velezensis metabolites. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed that glutathione metabolism and the antioxidant enzyme system were involved in the response to B. velezensis metabolites. The down-regulation of the pathogenesis-related genes, PG1 and POT1, suggested that B. velezensis metabolites decreased the pathogenicity of P. olsonii. B. velezensis metabolites disrupted the homeostasis of reactive oxygen species in P. olsonii by affecting glucose metabolism, resulting in spore deformation and disruption of growth. In addition, the expression of key pathogenesis-related genes was down-regulated, thereby reducing the pathogenicity of P. olsonii.DisscusionThis study provides insights into the responses of P. olsonii to B. velezensis metabolites and identifies potential target genes that may be useful in biocontrol strategies for the suppression of post-harvest spoilage in grapes

    Unbalanced development characteristics and driving mechanisms of regional urban spatial form: a case study of Jiangsu Province, China

    Unbalanced regional development is widespread, and the imbalance of regional development in developing countries with rapid urbanization is increasingly apparent. This threatens the sustainable development of the region. Promoting the coordinated development of the region has become a hot spot of scientific research and a major practical need. Taking 99 counties of Jiangsu Province China, a typical coastal plain region, as the basic research unit, this paper explores the unbalanced development characteristics of the regional urban spatial form using three indicators: urban spatial expansion size, development intensity, and distribution aggregation degree. Then, their driving mechanisms were evaluated using spatial autocorrelation analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, linear regression, and geographically weighted regression. Our results found that the areas with larger urban spatial expansion size and development intensity were mainly concentrated in southern Jiangsu, where there was a positive spatial correlation between them. We found no agglomeration phenomenon in urban spatial distribution aggregation degree. From the perspective of driving factors: economics was the main driving factor of urban spatial expansion size; urbanization level and urbanization quality were the main driving factors of urban spatial development intensity. Natural landform and urbanization level are the main driving factors of urban spatial distribution aggregation degree. Finally, we discussed the optimization strategy of regional coordinated development. The quality of urbanization development and regional integration should be promoted in Southern Jiangsu. The level of urbanization development should be improved relying on rapid transportation to develop along the axis in central Jiangsu. The economic size should be increased, focusing on the expansion of the urban agglomeration in northern Jiangsu. This study will enrich the perspective of research on the characteristics and mechanisms of regional urban spatial imbalance, and helps to optimize and regulate the imbalance of regional urban development from multiple perspectives

    Effect of sodium stibogluconate in recruiting and awakening immune cells in the pleural fluid of pancreatic cancer: preparation for immunotherapy

    Ascites and pleural effusion are recognized complications of pancreatic cancer. These diseases are accompanied by ascites and pleural effusion, and drug treatment is limited by high costs, long hospital stays, and failure rates. Immunotherapy may offer new option, but in most patients with late stages of cancer, immune cells may lose the ability to recognize tumor cells, how to activate their immune cells is a major problem, sodium glucosidate (SSG) is injected into ascites as a protein tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor to wake up immune cells and prepare for immunotherapy. We used single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to investigate whether and how SSG injected into ascites of pancreatic cancer elicits an immune response. Our study showed that the process of SSG fusion treatment of ascites and pleural effusion, the interaction between TandNK cells, MPs cells, monocytes and neutrophils was induced, and large numbers of genes were expressed, resulting in upregulation of immune response, which also approved that SSG is not only used as a protein tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor, but also it works as a protein tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor. It can also be used to regulate immune cell function, recruiting immune cells to the right place with the help of PD-1 or PD-L1 to fight cancer cells in ascites and pleural effusions in cancer patients

    Neuraminidase and Hemagglutinin Matching Patterns of a Highly Pathogenic Avian and Two Pandemic H1N1 Influenza A Viruses

    BACKGROUND: Influenza A virus displays strong reassortment characteristics, which enable it to achieve adaptation in human infection. Surveying the reassortment and virulence of novel viruses is important in the prevention and control of an influenza pandemic. Meanwhile, studying the mechanism of reassortment may accelerate the development of anti-influenza strategies. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) matching patterns of two pandemic H1N1 viruses (the 1918 and current 2009 strains) and a highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (H5N1) were studied using a pseudotyped particle (pp) system. Our data showed that four of the six chimeric HA/NA combinations could produce infectious pps, and that some of the chimeric pps had greater infectivity than did their ancestors, raising the possibility of reassortment among these viruses. The NA of H5N1 (A/Anhui/1/2005) could hardly reassort with the HAs of the two H1N1 viruses. Many biological characteristics of HA and NA, including infectivity, hemagglutinating ability, and NA activity, are dependent on their matching pattern. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our data suggest the existence of an interaction between HA and NA, and the HA NA matching pattern is critical for valid viral reassortment
