    The hidden inequality: the disparities in the quality of daily use masks associated with family economic status

    Wearing high-quality masks plays a critical role in reducing COVID-19 transmission. However, no study has investigated socioeconomic inequality in the quality of masks. Addressing this gap, this paper explored the relationships between mask’s quality and family economic status. The cross-sectional survey was conducted in two Chinese universities by distributing structured questionnaires to assess participants’ characteristics including family economic status, and meanwhile collecting their masks to evaluate the quality by measuring particle filtration efficiency. The valid responses were obtained from 912 students with mean age of 19.556 ± 1.453  years and were analyzed by using fractional or binary logistic regression. Three main findings were presented. First, inequality existed in the quality of masks. 36.07% of students were using unqualified masks with average filtration efficiency of 0.795 ± 0.119, which was much lower than China’s national standard (0.9). Of those masks with identified production date, 11.43% were manufactured during COVID-19 outbreak when market was flooded with counterfeit production, and thus were of poor quality with average filtration efficiency of 0.819 ± 0.152. Second, better family economic status was associated with better masks’ filtration efficiency and greater probability of using qualified masks. Third, students with better family economic status tend to use masks with individual packaging, and unique patterns and special designs, which may lead to inequality on a psychological level. Our analysis reveals the hidden socioeconomic inequality that exist behind cheap masks. In facing the challenges of future emerging infectious diseases, it is important to address the inequity to ensure equal access to affordable qualified personal protection equipment

    Learning Summary-Worthy Visual Representation for Abstractive Summarization in Video

    Multimodal abstractive summarization for videos (MAS) requires generating a concise textual summary to describe the highlights of a video according to multimodal resources, in our case, the video content and its transcript. Inspired by the success of the large-scale generative pre-trained language model (GPLM) in generating high-quality textual content (e.g., summary), recent MAS methods have proposed to adapt the GPLM to this task by equipping it with the visual information, which is often obtained through a general-purpose visual feature extractor. However, the generally extracted visual features may overlook some summary-worthy visual information, which impedes model performance. In this work, we propose a novel approach to learning the summary-worthy visual representation that facilitates abstractive summarization. Our method exploits the summary-worthy information from both the cross-modal transcript data and the knowledge that distills from the pseudo summary. Extensive experiments on three public multimodal datasets show that our method outperforms all competing baselines. Furthermore, with the advantages of summary-worthy visual information, our model can have a significant improvement on small datasets or even datasets with limited training data.Comment: Accepted by IJCAI-202

    Childhood maltreatment is associated with larger left thalamic gray matter volume in adolescents with generalized anxiety disorder.

    BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common anxiety disorder that usually begins in adolescence. Childhood maltreatment is highly prevalent and increases the possibility for developing a variety of mental disorders including anxiety disorders. An earlier age at onset of GAD is significantly related to maltreatment in childhood. Exploring the underpinnings of the relationship between childhood maltreatment and adolescent onset GAD would be helpful in identifying the potential risk markers of this condition. METHODS: Twenty-six adolescents with GAD and 25 healthy controls participated in this study. A childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ) was introduced to assess childhood maltreatment. All subjects underwent high-resolution structural magnetic resonance scans. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to investigate gray matter alterations. RESULTS: Significantly larger gray matter volumes of the right putamen were observed in GAD patients compared to healthy controls. In addition, a significant diagnosis-by-maltreatment interaction effect for the left thalamic gray matter volume was revealed, as shown by larger volumes of the left thalamic gray matter in GAD patients with childhood maltreatment compared with GAD patients without childhood maltreatment as well as with healthy controls with/without childhood maltreatment. A significant positive association between childhood maltreatment and left thalamic gray matter volume was only seen in GAD patients. CONCLUSIONS: These findings revealed an increased volume in the subcortical regions in adolescent GAD, and the alterations in the left thalamus might be involved in the association between childhood maltreatment and the occurrence of GAD

    Diagnostic Performance of Fas Ligand mRNA Expression for Acute Rejection after Kidney Transplantation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    <div><p>Background</p><p>The value of Fas ligand (FASL) as a diagnostic immune marker for acute renal rejection is controversial; this meta-analysis aimed to clarify the role of FASL in acute renal rejection.</p><p>Methods</p><p>The relevant literature was included by systematic searching the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. Accuracy data for acute rejection (AR) and potential confounding variables (the year of publication, area, sample source, quantitative techniques, housekeeping genes, fluorescence staining, sample collection time post-renal transplantation, and clinical classification of AR) were extracted after carefully reviewing the studies. Data were analyzed by Meta-DiSc 1.4, RevMan 5.0, and the Midas module in Stata 11.0 software.</p><p>Results</p><p>Twelve relevant studies involving 496 subjects were included. The overall pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (LR), negative LR, and diagnostic odds ratio, together with the 95% CI were 0.64 (0.57–0.70), 0.90 (0.85–0.93), 5.66 (3.51–9.11), 0.30 (0.16–0.54), and 30.63 (14.67–63.92), respectively. The area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.9389. Fagan’s nomogram showed that the probability of AR episodes in the kidney transplant recipient increased from 15% to 69% when FASL was positive, and was reduced to 4% when FASL was negative. No threshold effect, sensitivity analyses, meta-regression, and subgroup analyses based on the potential variables had a significant statistical change for heterogeneity.</p><p>Conclusions</p><p>Current evidence suggests the diagnostic potential for FASL mRNA detection as a reliable immune marker for AR in renal allograft recipients. Further large, multicenter, prospective studies are needed to validate the power of this test marker in the non-invasive diagnosis of AR after renal transplantation.</p></div
