Manganese oxide biomineralization provides protection against nitrite toxicity in a cell-density-dependent manner.

[eng] Manganese biomineralization is a widespread process among bacteria and fungi. To date, there is no conclusive experimental evidence for how and if this process impacts microbial fitness in the environment. Here, we show how a model organism for manganese oxidation is growth inhibited by nitrite, and that this inhibition is mitigated in the presence of manganese. We show that such manganese-mediated mitigation of nitrite inhibition is dependent on the culture inoculum size, and that manganese oxide (MnOX) forms granular precipitates in the culture, rather than sheaths around individual cells. We provide evidence that MnOX protection involves both its ability to catalyze nitrite oxidation into (nontoxic) nitrate under physiological conditions and its potential role in influencing processes involving reactive oxygen species (ROS). Taken together, these results demonstrate improved microbial fitness through MnOX deposition in an ecological setting, i.e., mitigation of nitrite toxicity, and point to a key role of MnOX in handling stresses arising from ROS

A device for determining objects in a colour photograph comprises an identifier, a feature extractor and a classifier. The identifier is designed to identify, from a plurality of continuous regions present in a binary image derived from the colour photograph, on the basis of a size or a form of said continuous regions, that continuous region having a size or form corresponding to a predetermined condition. The feature extractor is designed to extract, for each of the continuous regions identified, a set of features from the colour photograph. The classifier is designed to classify the identified continuous regions into at least two disjoint groups on the basis of the extracted sets of features for the identified continuous regions

Positionierung von Kommunikationsabteilungen und Kommunikatoren: Leistungsbeitrag, Rollen und Selbstverständnis

Kommunikationsabteilungen und Kommunikationsverantwortliche stehen im internen Wettbewerb um Ressourcen und Einfluss im Unternehmen. Um sich gegenüber der Unternehmensleitung, Business Partnern in Geschäftseinheiten und anderen Zentralbereichen als strategisch relevante Managementfunktion zu positionieren, muss man den Beitrag der eigenen Aktivitäten zum Unternehmenserfolg begründen können. Dazu sind die Definition eines klaren Leistungsportfolios und das Herausstellen der eigenen Qualitäten und Kompetenzen unerlässlich. Dieser Beitrag skizziert überblicksartig den aktuellen Forschungsstand zur Positionierung von Kommunikationsabteilungen und erläutert grundlegende Begriffe und Konzepte. Er reflektiert das zunehmende Leistungsspektrum der Unternehmenskommunikation und stellt relevante Befunde zu den Berufsrollen und Selbstverständnissen von Kommunikationsverantwortlichen vor. Darüber hinaus werden zwei neue Bezugsrahmen zur Systematisierung von Leistungen und Berufsrollen vorgestellt, die wissenschaftlich fundiert und in der Praxis anwendbar sind: das Communications Contributions Framework und das Communication Manager Roles Grid. Der Beitrag schließt mit einem Ausblick, wie Praktiker und Wissenschaftler die Positionierung von Kommunikationsabteilungen bzw. Kommunikatoren analysieren und Ziele zur Verbesserung der Stellung im Unternehmen definieren können
