    Bionically inspired information representation for embodied software agents : realizing neuropsychoanalytic concepts of information processing within the computational framework ARSi10

    This work describes the bionically inspired representation of information in a control unit for embodied software agents. It focuses on the first ever realization of neuropsychoanalytic concepts for generating and processing mental data structures in computer science, and compares said approach to establish bionically inspired methodologies. The approach is completely new to Artificial Intelligence and should allow the design of systems following the principles of the human being's mental apparatus, thus enabling them to operate in highly dynamic environments.An existing decision unit is supplemented with an information representation system composed of an information representation concept, a data storage, and an information management unit. By use of a top-down design approach, the resulting adaptions are introduced into a new model whose implementation in embodied software agents produces the computational framework ARSi10.The multi-agent framework-based simulator 'Bubble World' is developed as a test-bed with predefined use cases, and the agents' abilities are evaluated through internal and external performance indicators. Internal and external sensor data are mapped to neuropsychoanalytically inspired data structures and used for the decision making process. This allows the agents to interact with their environment while keeping their system resources balanced and thus retaining their functional abilities.15

    The project ARS (Artificial Recognition System)\ud develops a novel approach to decision making in the domain\ud of building automation systems. Concepts from neurology, psy\ud chology, and psychoanalysis are used for this approach. We give a short overview about this decision making concept, the simulation environment, and results from simulation experiments. These simulation runs consist of several autonomous agents grouped to two teams which are competing for restricted resources. ARS deals with agents as an intermediate step towards buildings. For some resources cooperation among team mates is necessary. One team is using the ARS approach including concepts like emotions,\ud drives, and desires. Further, it uses a value system inspired by social levels to stimulate cooperation among the team mates. The other team—as a reference—is realized by using a simple rule based decision making approach. The simulation results show an improvement in team-survival due to the introduction of social levels

    Abstract. During the last decade communication technology has changed rapidly. Due to its decreasing costs and rising expansion, IP (Internet Protocol) technology has found its way to areas that have long been the domain of publicswitched telephone networks (PSTN). Voice over IP (VoIP) applications are widely used not only for phone calls or common Internet conferences, but also tend to be used for safety critical communication applications. Hence security and safety topics arise, which pose new challenges in this area of research. The authors are convinced that new issues on the network layer as well as on the application layer require detailed analysis. Hence this paper gives an overview on latest developments in this area, and states the authors ’ view on this topic. Thereby safety and security issues are faced from different abstraction layers. On the one hand the network layer and on the other hand the application layer focusing on middleware systems in the area of service oriented architectures (SOAs)

    Extending a smart wheelchair navigation by stress sensors

    This paper discusses the adaptation of a novel bionic approach of AI to an Assisted Powered Wheelchair (APW) controller, in order to facilitate its driving by people with severe impairments. The control unit offers three modes of operation and this proposal refers to the second control that assists the wheelchair user in driving tasks like passing a door or avoiding obstacles. The user’s psychic condition is considered in the APW navigation decision and it is determined by a stress detection system composed by electrocardiogram and skin conductance sensors. The control unit has to deal with environmental and stress data and must trigger actuating commands. The prototype implementation will be done within the platform STAGE and afterwards it will be embedded in a real powered wheelchair

    Can psychoanalysis offer a new computer model? Can computer designers help psychoanalysts to understand their theory better?In contemporary publications human psyche is often related to neural networks. Why? The wiring in computers can also be related to application software. But does this really make sense? Artificial Intelligence has tried to implement functions of human psyche. The reached achievements are remarkable; however, the goal to get a functional model of the mental apparatus was not reached. Was the selected direction incorrect?The editors are convinced: yes, and they try to give answers here. If one accepts that the brain is an information processing system, then one also has to accept that computer theories can be applied to the brain's functions, the human mental apparatus. The contributors of this book - Solms, Panksepp, Sloman and many others who are all experts in computer design, psychoanalysis and neurology are united in one goal: finding synergy in their interdisciplinary fields. © 2009 Springer-Verlag/Wien.
