    Pore-scale Modeling of Viscous Flow and Induced Forces in Dense Sphere Packings

    We propose a method for effectively upscaling incompressible viscous flow in large random polydispersed sphere packings: the emphasis of this method is on the determination of the forces applied on the solid particles by the fluid. Pore bodies and their connections are defined locally through a regular Delaunay triangulation of the packings. Viscous flow equations are upscaled at the pore level, and approximated with a finite volume numerical scheme. We compare numerical simulations of the proposed method to detailed finite element (FEM) simulations of the Stokes equations for assemblies of 8 to 200 spheres. A good agreement is found both in terms of forces exerted on the solid particles and effective permeability coefficients

    Neither participation nor revolution: the strategy of the Moroccan Jamiat al-Adl wal-Ihsan

    Scholars and students of Islamist movements are divided over the issue of Islamists' commitment to democracy and a number of studies have attempted to discover the true nature of Islamist parties. This paper rejects this approach and argues that the behaviour of Islamist parties can be better understood through an analysis of the constraints and opportunities that their surrounding environment provides. Specifically, the paper aims at explaining the choice of the Moroccan Jamiat al-Adl wal-Ihsan neither to participate in institutional politics nor to undertake violent actions to transform the regime. This is done through an examination of its relations with the other political actors. The paper argues that Jamiat al-Adl wal-Ihsan's behaviour is as much the product of rational thinking as it is of ideology and provides evidence to support this claim. Such findings are important not only in the Moroccan context, but contribute to a growing literature claiming that Islamist movements should be treated as rational political actors operating under 'environmental' constraints and opportunities

    Do dividends signal future earnings in the Nordic stock markets?

    We study the informational content of dividends on three Nordic civil law markets, where other simultaneous but blurring motives for dividends may be weaker. Using aggregate data on real earnings per share and payout ratios, long time series from 1969 to 2010, and methodologies which address problems of endogeneity, non-stationarity and autocorrelation (including a Vector Error Correction Model approach), we find evidence on dividend signaling in Nordic markets. However, we also find heterogeneity in the relationship between dividends and earnings on markets similar in many respects, suggesting that even small variations in the institutional surroundings may be important for the results

    LEAP-2017: Comparison of the Type-B Numerical Simulations with Centrifuge Test Results

    This paper presents comparisons of 11 sets of Type-B numerical simulations with the results of a selected set of centrifuge tests conducted in the LEAP-2017 project. Time histories of accelerations, excess pore water pressures, and lateral displacement of the ground surface are compared to the results of nine centrifuge tests. A number of numerical simulations showed trends similar to those observed in the experiments. While achieving a close match to all measured responses (accelerations, pore pressures, and displacements) is quite challenging, the numerical simulations show promising capabilities that can be further improved with the availability of additional high-quality experimental results

    Conceptual design of free flight with airborne separation assurance

    The study described in this paper originally only aimed at studying the human factors problems of airborne separation hi a Free Flight environment. However to define the Free Flight environment with sufficient detail, a concept was designed at NLR. This conceptual design includes rules-of-the-sky, a conflict resolution algorithm, conflict detection, cockpit display recommendations, system description as well as operational implications. The feasibility of the design has been evaluated in three sub-studies: (i) off-line traffic simulations with very high traffic densities and a total of up to 300 aircraft, (ii) a safety analysis comparing the resolution method with current day ATC and (iii) a man-in-the-loop simulator experiment hi traffic densities up to three times the average WestEuropean traffic density with eight air line crews. None of these studies could refute the feasibility of the Free Flight conceptual design
