Passive Human Sensing Enhanced by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: Opportunities and Challenges
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have flexible and exceptional
performance in manipulating electromagnetic waves and customizing wireless
channels. These capabilities enable them to provide a plethora of valuable
activity-related information for promoting wireless human sensing. In this
article, we present a comprehensive review of passive human sensing using radio
frequency signals with the assistance of RISs. Specifically, we first introduce
fundamental principles and physical platform of RISs. Subsequently, based on
the specific applications, we categorize the state-of-the-art human sensing
techniques into three types, including human imaging, localization, and activity
recognition. Meanwhile, we would also investigate the benefits that RISs bring
to these applications. Furthermore, we explore the application of RISs in human
micro-motion sensing, and propose a vital signs monitoring system enhanced by
RISs. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the promising potential
of RISs in sensing vital signs for manipulating individuals. Finally, we
discuss the technical challenges and opportunities in this field
A comprehensive checklist of the deciduous photinia genus Pourthiaea (Maleae, Rosaceae), with emphasis on their validity and typification
Due to the complicated evolutionary history in Pourthiaea, ninety-seven taxa have been described since 1784, and ninety-one of them are validly published taxa, five are naked names, and one is an invalid name. After a comprehensive and critical evaluation, 213 names have been published, including new combinations, new status, and new names; this may be due to the controversial taxonomic position of Pourthiaea in the apple tribe, Maleae. We herewith provide a taxonomic checklist of Pourthiaea for further taxonomic and evolutionary studies. We also lectotypify two taxa: Photinia amphidoxa var. stylosa and P. glabra var. fokienensis
Global Transcriptome Profiling of Multiple Porcine Organs Reveals Toxoplasma gondii-Induced Transcriptional Landscapes
© 2019 He, Ma, Wang, Zhang, Li, Zhai, Wang, Elsheikha and Zhu. We characterized the porcine tissue transcriptional landscapes that follow Toxoplasma gondii infection. RNAs were isolated from liver, spleen, cerebral cortex, lung, and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) of T. gondii-infected and uninfected (control) pigs at days 6 and 18 postinfection, and were analyzed using next-generation sequencing (RNA-seq). T. gondii altered the expression of 178, 476, 199, 201, and 362 transcripts at 6 dpi and 217, 223, 347, 119, and 161 at 18 dpi in the infected brain, liver, lung, MLNs and spleen, respectively. The differentially expressed transcripts (DETs) were grouped into five expression patterns and 10 sub-clusters. Gene Ontology enrichment and pathway analysis revealed that immune-related genes dominated the overall transcriptomic signature and that metabolic processes, such as steroid biosynthesis, and metabolism of lipid and carboxylic acid, were downregulated in infected tissues. Co-expression network analysis identified transcriptional modules associated with host immune response to infection. These findings not only show how T. gondii infection alters porcine transcriptome in a tissue-specific manner, but also offer a gateway for testing new hypotheses regarding human response to T. gondii infection
Taurocholate Induces Connective Tissue Growth Factor Expression in Hepatocytes Through ERK-YAP Signaling
Background/Aims: Cholestasis is characterized by intrahepatic accumulation of cytotoxic bile acids (BAs), ultimately leading to fibrosis and cirrhosis, but the precise role of BAs in cholestasis-induced liver fibrosis remains largely elusive. In this study, we investigated the role and the potential mechanisms of BAs during cholestasis in vivo and in vitro. Methods: The effect of BAs during cholestasis was studied in bile duct ligation (BDL) rat models in vivo. We performed immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and quantitative RT-PCR to investigate the expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2) in rat liver during cholestasis. The hepatic cell lines AML12 and BRL were stimulated with taurocholate (TC) and the level of CTGF/CCN2, and activation of ERK, Akt, p38 MAPK, JNK, YAP, and TGF-β/Smad signaling were examined using Western blotting. Next, to elucidate the mechanism underlying bile acid-induced CTGF/CCN2, we treated the cells with MEK1/2 inhibitor (U0126), YAP function inhibitor (verteporfin), p38 kinase inhibitor (SB203580), Akt inhibitor (MK2206), and small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting mek1, erk, and yap in cooperation with TC. Besides, we confirmed the activation of these signaling pathways in BDL and sham rat livers by immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and quantitative RT-PCR. Results: In this study, we confirmed that the expression of CTGF/CCN2 was increased in BDL-induced rodent cholestatic liver fibrosis. In addition, we showed that TC, the main component of BAs, enhanced the synthesis of CTGF/ CCN2 in AML12 and BRL hepatic cell lines. Moreover, we demonstrated that TC activated ERK, Akt, and YAP signaling in hepatocytes, but the precise roles of these signaling cascades in the expression of CTGF/CCN2 were different: TC-induced expression of CTGF/CCN2 was mediated by ERK-YAP signaling, whereas Akt signaling inhibited ERK signaling and YAP and subsequently the expression of CTGF/CCN2 in hepatocytes. Furthermore, YAP functioned as a downstream regulator of ERK signaling in TC-induced CTGF/CCN2 expression in hepatocytes. Conclusion: Our report provides evidence for the role of conjugated BAs in liver fibrosis and suggests that the production of CTGF/CCN2, induced by conjugated BAs via ERK-YAP axis activation, may be a therapeutic target in cholestasis-induced liver fibrosis
Modelling the Effects of Climatic Factors on the Biomass and Rodent Distribution in a Tibetan Grassland Region in China
To identify the main climatic factors from 2007 to 2009 that influence biomass and rodent distribution, 576 fixed sample plots within 81 million km2 of different climatic grassland in Tibet were monitored. The aboveground biomass, the total burrows, the active burrows, the burrow index, and the rodent density in the plots were measured yearly in October. The monthly precipitation and the average temperatures from April to November were obtained for four successive years (2006-2009). Correlative and modelling analyses between the aboveground biomass, the rodent density, and the climatic factors were performed. The results showed that biomass and rodent density were significantly correlated with the climatic factors. Using ridge regression analyses, models of the biomass and rodent density with respect to the monthly precipitations and average temperatures of the previous year were developed. The raw testing data demonstrated that the models can be used approximately to predict biomass and rodent density

β-Carboline Alkaloids From the Deep-Sea Fungus Trichoderma sp. MCCC 3A01244 as a New Type of Anti-pulmonary Fibrosis Agent That Inhibits TGF-β/Smad Signaling Pathway
Pulmonary fibrosis is a scarring disease of lung tissue, which seriously threatens human health. Treatment options are currently limited, and effective strategies are still lacking. In the present study, 25 compounds were isolated from the deep-sea fungus Trichoderma sp. MCCC 3A01244. Among them, two β-carboline alkaloids, trichocarbolines A (1) and C (4) are new compounds. The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated based on their HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra, optical rotation calculation, and comparisons with data reported in the literature. Trichocarboline B [(+)- and (–)-enantiomers] had previously been synthesized, and this is its first report as a natural product. Their anti-pulmonary fibrosis (PF) activity and cytotoxicity were investigated. Compounds 1, 11, and 13 strongly inhibited TGF-β1-induced total collagen accumulation and showed low cytotoxicity against the HFL1 cell line. Further studies revealed compound 1 inhibited extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition by downregulating the expression of protein fibronectin (FN), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). Mechanistic study revealed that compound 1 decreased pulmonary fibrosis by inhibiting the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway. As a newly identified β-carboline alkaloid, compound 1 may be used as a lead compound for developing more efficient anti-pulmonary fibrosis agents
A simulation study on the measurement of D0-D0bar mixing parameter y at BES-III
We established a method on measuring the \dzdzb mixing parameter for
BESIII experiment at the BEPCII collider. In this method, the doubly
tagged events, with one decays to
CP-eigenstates and the other decays semileptonically, are used to
reconstruct the signals. Since this analysis requires good separation,
a likelihood approach, which combines the , time of flight and the
electromagnetic shower detectors information, is used for particle
identification. We estimate the sensitivity of the measurement of to be
0.007 based on a fully simulated MC sample.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
