Trust in principals
Trust is generally considered as the basis of relationships between major school stakeholders and contributes not only to productive attitudes and behaviors but also to the accomplishment of collective goals. The principal is the key person in creating the atmosphere and the conditions conducive to trust in which trust-based relationships among school constituencies can flourish. Specifically, school culture characterized by collegiality, professionalism, and consideration generally leads to higher trust in the principal if consistently supported by trustworthy behaviors of the principal. This brings several benefits to and desirable outcomes for school organizations, employees, and eventually students. Collaborative culture, organizational justice, teacher professionalism, job satisfaction, and organizational citizenship behaviors, with reduced burnout, is by no means an exhaustive list of positive organizational and work-related outcomes. Moreover, trust in the principal plays an essential role in the thorough and smooth implementation of educational changes and better student outcomes. However, trust in the principal is still an underexplored area of research. In addition to reliance on simpler correlational methods and cross-sectional data, which fall short of demonstrating multiple mechanisms that create and sustain trust in the principal, possible moderating roles of school characteristics have not received enough attention. Also, teachers are the primary focus of trust studies whereas parents’ and students’ perspectives have been generally overlooked. Thus, both theoretical and methodological shortcomings call for further studies about trust in the principal in order to provide a more comprehensive understanding across different school settings
Teacher Emotions in Organizational Change Process
Even though research has shown that change interventions in educational organizations trigger emotional reactions, these reactions are still overlooked not only in theory but also in practice. Emotions experienced during the change process are, indeed, effective factors in shaping the implementers’ change-related attitudes and behaviors and maintaining their professional identities without losing their focus on teaching. However, the problems including the false beliefs about emotions, the cultural and individualized approaches needed for managing emotions, and lack of information about the functions of emotions have resulted in the underemphasized role of the highly important emotional dimension of change process. In this respect, the purpose of this study is to reveal the roles of emotions experienced by teachers about educational changes, the myths about these emotions, and related factors with a literature-based discussion. The results of the study indicated that teacher participation in the change process, support, and open communication play crucial roles in teachers’ change-related emotions, along with individual characteristics
Modeling Change Implementation Behaviors: Teachers’ Affective and Attitudinal Reactions to Change in Turkey.
Theorizing on the Affective Events Theory this study aims at (1) exploring the relationships among trust, change-related positive and negative affect, commitment to change, and job satisfaction and, (2) investigating their impacts on the change implementation behaviors of teachers in the second-order educational change context. The study was designed as a correlational one and took place in 85 public schools randomly selected through stratified cluster sampling from 13 school districts in Ankara, Turkey. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the data which were collected from a sample of 663 public school teachers. The results verified the superior role of trust in top management in shaping change-related reactions rather than work-related one and documented the unique roles of positive and negative change-related affect in constructing teachers’ change and work-related attitudes. The results also revealed that affective and attitudinal responses of change receivers are influential in predicting the degree of their change implementation behaviors. These findings indicate the need for building trust at both school and system levels while investing in positive change-related affect for more desired outcomes of educational change interventions
School leaders’ perspectives on government-initiated changes in Flemish secondary schools
This paper explores the perspectives of Flemish secondary school principals and coordinating principals on the government-proposed changes and uncovers their experiences with these changes in an in-depth manner. In a school system characterised by school freedom and free school choice, semi-structured interviews with 21 school leaders revealed the significance of school autonomy to create bottom-up solutions to the change-related problems. However, infrastructure, monetary resources, teacher, and parent reactions sometimes proved to be obstacles, jeopardised effective implementation, and affected the leaders’ workload extensively. The results showed the critical roles played by the school principals to satisfy the change-related needs of the staff and motivate them for change. The findings collectively suggest the need for more attention devoted to 1) the human side of the change, 2) greater support provided throughout the process, and 3) a loose connection between politics and change-related decisions
