Query Expansion for Survey Question Retrieval in the Social Sciences

In recent years, the importance of research data and the need to archive and to share it in the scientific community have increased enormously. This introduces a whole new set of challenges for digital libraries. In the social sciences typical research data sets consist of surveys and questionnaires. In this paper we focus on the use case of social science survey question reuse and on mechanisms to support users in the query formulation for data sets. We describe and evaluate thesaurus- and co-occurrence-based approaches for query expansion to improve retrieval quality in digital libraries and research data archives. The challenge here is to translate the information need and the underlying sociological phenomena into proper queries. As we can show retrieval quality can be improved by adding related terms to the queries. In a direct comparison automatically expanded queries using extracted co-occurring terms can provide better results than queries manually reformulated by a domain expert and better results than a keyword-based BM25 baseline.Comment: to appear in Proceedings of 19th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries 2015 (TPDL 2015

LeibnizOpen - the portal for Open Access publications from the Leibniz Association

The Leibniz Association supports Open Access strategies on organizational and institutional level. Leibniz institutes encourage Open Access publishing ideally and financially. Some of them issue Open Access journals. With the portal for Open Access publications LeibnizOpen (http://www.leibnizopen.de/), the Leibniz Association complies with its "WGL Guidelines on open access" in order to allow a free exchange of quality assured research results as defined by the "Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities". LeibnizOpen collects freely accessible electronic publications authored by Leibniz researchers and provides a central access point to Open Access publications of the Leibniz Association. Technically, LeibnizOpen is an aggregator of disciplinary repositories mainly run by Leibniz infrastructure organizations that offer searching and archiving of freely available research publications for their respective communities. Content of these repositories is brought together by common technologies and metadata standards. Additionally, activities are carried out to increase the acceptance of Open Access in Leibniz institutes, acquiring content and clarifying legal issues. In order to succeed with this common goal despite the characteristic independence and heterogeneous publication cultures of the Leibniz institutes, a tight cooperation exists between the institutes running LeibnizOpen, the Leibniz Associations' central office as well as the Open Access Working Group, and Libraries Working Group of the Leibniz Association.Die Leibniz-Gemeinschaft unterstützt Open Access auf strategischer, d.h. Organisationsebene sowie auf Institutsebene. Die Leibniz-Einrichtungen fördern Open Access - ideell und finanziell - als Publikationsweg und geben zahlreiche Open-Access-Zeitschriften heraus. Mit ihrem Portal für Open-Access-Publikationen, LeibnizOpen (http://www.leibnizopen.de/), setzt die Leibniz-Gemeinschaft insbesondere ihre "Leitlinien zu Open Access in der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft" um, die den freien Austausch qualitätsgeprüfter Forschungsergebnisse im Sinne der Berliner Erklärung über den offenen Zugang zu wissenschaftlichem Wissen zum Ziel haben. LeibnizOpen bündelt die frei verfügbaren Publikationen von Leibniz-Forscherinnen und -Forschern und ist somit das zentrale Verzeichnis für Open-Access-Publikationen aus der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft. Technisch gesehen ist es ein Aggregator einer Reihe von Fachrepositorien, die überwiegend von den Infrastruktureinrichtungen der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft betrieben werden und den entsprechenden Fach-Communities die Recherche sowie die Archivierung von frei im Netz verfügbaren Publikationen ermöglichen. Dazu werden die Inhalte dieser Repositorien mittels gemeinsamer technischer und Metadaten-Standards zusammengeführt. Daneben werden flankierend Aktivitäten zur Akzeptanzsteigerung von Open Access in den Leibniz-Instituten, zur Content-Akquise sowie zur Klärung damit verbundender Rechtsfragen betrieben. Um trotz der charakteristisch hohen Eigenständigkeit und äußerst heterogenen Publikationskulturen der Leibniz-Institute das gemeinsame Ziel effizient zu verfolgen, besteht eine enge Abstimmung zwischen den LeibnizOpen betreibenden Einrichtungen, der Geschäftsstelle, dem Arbeitskreis Open Access sowie dem Arbeitskreis Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft
