Comparative prebiotic activity of mixtures of cereal grain polysaccharides
The main components of the non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) fraction of wheat flour are arabinoxylan (AX) and β-glucan. These are also present in other cereal grains, but their proportions vary with AX being the major component in wheat and rye and β-glucan in barley and oats. Therefore, it was hypothesised that these NSPs could act synergistically when fermented in vitro at the ratios present in the major foods consumed, resulting in increased prebiotic activity. AX and β-glucan were therefore tested in in vitro fermentation studies to assess their prebiotic activity when used individually and/or in different ratios. Short-chain fatty-acids (SCFAs) produced from in vitro fermentation were measured using HPLC and bacterial populations were measured using flow cytometry with fluorescence in situ hybridisation (Flow-FISH). Fermentation of AX alone resulted in a significant bifidogenic activity and increased concentrations of SCFAs, mainly acetate, after 8-24 h of fermentation, however β-glucan alone did not show prebiotic activity. The greatest prebiotic activity, based on concentration of total SCFAs and increases in total bacteria as well as beneficial Bifidobacterium and Clostridium coccoides/Eubacterium groups, was observed when AX and β-glucan were combined at a 3:1 ratio, which corresponds to their ratios in wheat flour which is major source of cereal fibre in the diet. This indicates that the population of bacteria in the human GI tract may be modulated by the composition of the fibre in the diet, to maximise the prebiotic potential
Gravitational Waves from Gravitational Collapse
Gravitational wave emission from the gravitational collapse of massive stars
has been studied for more than three decades. Current state of the art
numerical investigations of collapse include those that use progenitors with
realistic angular momentum profiles, properly treat microphysics issues,
account for general relativity, and examine non--axisymmetric effects in three
dimensions. Such simulations predict that gravitational waves from various
phenomena associated with gravitational collapse could be detectable with
advanced ground--based and future space--based interferometric observatories.Comment: 68 pages including 13 figures; revised version accepted for

Determination of the prebiotic activity of wheat arabinogalactan peptide (AGP) using batch culture fermentation
Purpose
To test the prebiotic activity of wheat arabinogalactan-peptide (AGP), which is a soluble dietary fibre composed of arabinogalactan polysaccharide linked to a 15-residue peptide, which accounts for up to 0.4% of the dry weight of wheat flour.
Methods
The prebiotic activity of AGP prepared from white wheat flour was tested using in-vitro fermentation by colonic bacteria in automated pH controlled anaerobic stirred batch cultures and compared to fructooligosaccharide (FOS) and wheat flour arabinoxylan (AX). Bacterial populations were measured using fluorescence in-situ hybridisation (flow-FISH) and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations were measured using HPLC.
Results
Fermentation of AGP resulted in a significant bifidogenic activity and increased concentrations of SCFAs, mainly acetate after 24 h of fermentation.
Conclusions
These results were comparable to those obtained with AX and confirm the prebiotic potential of AGP. Furthermore, fermentation of a mixture of AGP and AX was faster compared to the single substrates and more similar to FOS, indicating that combinations of fermentable carbohydrates with different structures are potentially more effective as prebiotics than single substrates
Prediction of ovarian cancer prognosis and response to chemotherapy by a serum-based multiparametric biomarker panel
Currently, there are no effective biomarkers for ovarian cancer prognosis or prediction of therapeutic response. The objective of this study was to examine a panel of 10 serum biochemical parameters for their ability to predict response to chemotherapy, progression and survival of ovarian cancer patients. Sera from ovarian cancer patients were collected prior and during chemotherapy and were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for CA125, kallikreins 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11, B7-H4, regenerating protein IV and Spondin-2. The odds ratio and hazard ratio and their 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated. Time-dependent receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were utilised to evaluate the prognostic performance of the biomarkers. The levels of several markers at baseline (c0), or after the first chemotherapy cycle (rc1), predicted chemotherapy response and overall or progression-free survival in univariate analysis. A multiparametric model (c0 of CA125, KLK5, KLK7 and rc1 of CA125) provided predictive accuracy with area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.82 (0.62 after correction for overfitting). Another marker combination (c0 of KLK7, KLK10, B7-H4, Spondin-2) was useful in predicting short-term (1-year) survival with an AUC of 0.89 (0.74 after correction for overfitting). All markers examined, except KLK7 and regenerating protein IV, were powerful predictors of time to progression (TTP) among chemotherapy responders. Individual and panels of biomarkers from the kallikrein family (and other families) can predict response to chemotherapy, overall survival, short-term (1-year) survival, progression-free survival and TTP of ovarian cancer patients treated with chemotherapy
Rotating Stars in Relativity
Rotating relativistic stars have been studied extensively in recent years,
both theoretically and observationally, because of the information one could
obtain about the equation of state of matter at extremely high densities and
because they are considered to be promising sources of gravitational waves. The
latest theoretical understanding of rotating stars in relativity is reviewed in
this updated article. The sections on the equilibrium properties and on the
nonaxisymmetric instabilities in f-modes and r-modes have been updated and
several new sections have been added on analytic solutions for the exterior
spacetime, rotating stars in LMXBs, rotating strange stars, and on rotating
stars in numerical relativity.Comment: 101 pages, 18 figures. The full online-readable version of this
article, including several animations, will be published in Living Reviews in

Effects of soy on lipoproteins in postmenopausal women: a double blind multicentre, placebo-controlled trial.
We evaluated the effect of isolated soy protein (ISP) on the lipid profile of postmenopausal women. We conclude that diet supplementation with 60 g ISP is slightly better than caseinate in favorably modifying the lipoprotein metabolism of postmenopausal women
Plasma lipoproteins in soy-treated postmenopausal women: a double-blind,placebo-controlled trial
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Postmenopausal modification of the lipid profile plays a major role in the risk of ischemic heart disease. Lifestyle counseling and estrogen replacement therapy have all been proposed as first-line measures, but there is no agreement on the best way to treat climacteric dyslipidemia. Soybean-based diet seems particularly attractive in this context, given its cholesterol lowering potential, its hypothetical anticancerous effects and possible modification of climacteric symptoms.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated the effect of 60 g isolated soy protein (ISP) daily on the lipid profile of 104 postmenopausal women (53.3 +/- 3.3 years) in a double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled (caseinate) trial, as part of a broader assessment of the effect of ISP on climacteric symptomatology. Serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, apo A-I, apo B and lipoprotein (a) were determined before and after a 12-week diet modification. Seventy-seven women completed the trial. Both soy and placebo determined a significant reduction in total cholesterol (-0.42 +/- 0.79 and -0.40 +/- 0.57 mmol/L) and LDL-cholesterol (-0.35 +/- 0.72 and -0.31 +/- 0.54 mmol/L), but only soy had a significant lowering effect on apo B and the LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio (-6% and -8% from baseline respectively); lipoprotein (a) plasma levels were not significantly changed by either treatment. Forty-four women were dyslipidemic at baseline; those with increased LDL concentrations showed a somewhat greater improvement in their lipoprotein profile (LDL-cholesterol and apo B reduction) with soy rather than placebo. No further information emerged when the subjects were divided into three apo E phenotypes.
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that diet supplementation with 60 g ISP is slightly better than caseinate in favorably modifying the lipoprotein metabolism of postmenopausal women; this effect is more evident in hypercholesterolemic subjects
Bi-layered collagen nano-structured membrane prototype collagen matrix 10826\uae for soft tissue regeneration in rabbits: an in vivo ultra-structural study of the early healing phase.
Collagen Matrix (CM) 10826 is a nanostructured bi-layered collagen membrane obtained from type I and III porcine collagen, which in vitro has shown to have the potential to be a substitute and/or stimulant for soft oral tissue regeneration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vivo potential and safety of this membrane for soft tissue regeneration in the early stage of wound healing. Two soft tissue wounds (test and control) were created on the back skin of 5 rabbits (female New Zealand White Rabbits specific pathogen free). All wounds were protected by a special poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene (PTFE) healing camera. On each rabbit on the test side CM-10826 was used, while on the control side conventional treatment (an autologous pedicle graft) was performed. The healing process was observed clinically after 2 and 6 days, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was performed after this period. After 7 days, animals were sacrificed and specimens were analyzed with light optic microscopy (LM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). These in vivo trials on rabbits confirmed that CM-10826 is well tolerated, without signs of histological inflammatory reaction and proved to be able to accelerate the spontaneous repair of the skin defect taken as the control. The light-optic and ultra-microscopy of serial biopsies showed that the new matrix is biocompatible and is able to function as a scaffold inducing soft tissue regeneration. In conclusion this study demonstrates that CM-10826 promote early soft tissue regeneration and suggests it is a potential constituent for human autologous keratinocytes seeded derma bioequivalent. It protects the wound from injuries and bacterial contamination accelerating healing process. As a clinical relevance, we consider that the quality of life of patients will be improved avoiding the use of major autologous grafts, reducing the hospitalization time and morbidity
